[축사 대담] 홈으로 돌아오는 용기, 함께 만드는 "Safe at Home"

: 운영의 어려움을 딛고 일어선 연대의 기록

“가장 어려운 시기에 맞잡은 손, 연대의 힘”

김옥란 센터장(이하 김): 감독님, 벌써 1년이 지나 결과보고서를 내게 되었습니다. 사실 작년 이맘때 우리 센터가 운영 면에서 여러모로 참 고비였지 않습니까? 센터의 존립을 고민할 만큼 어려운 시기였는데, 그때 예강희망키움재단에서 우리의 손을 잡아주신 덕분에 이 '리커버리 야구단'이라는 기적 같은 프로그램을 이어갈 수 있었습니다. 고립된 청년들을 향한 재단의 깊은 신뢰와 지원이 없었다면 오늘 이 기록들도 존재하지 못했을 겁니다.

이만수 감독(이하 이): 제 말이 그겁니다. 야구도 팀이 위기에 처했을 때 구원 투수가 나타나면 분위기가 반전되곤 하죠. 예강희망키움재단이 우리 청년들에게는 든든한 구원 투수이자 페이스메이커가 되어준 셈입니다. 센터장님과 제가 벌써 몇 년째 이 운동장 위에서 아이들을 만나고 있지만, 올해처럼 재단과 끈끈하게 협력하며 안정적으로 운영된 해가 또 있었나 싶습니다. 덕분에 크루들이 서로 눈도 못 마주치던 '낯선 그라운드'에서 당당히 자신의 자리를 찾게 되었습니다.

김: 감독님께도 참 감사한 마음뿐입니다. 감독님께서 오래도록 늘 한결같이 저희와 함께해주셨잖아요. 벌써 몇 년인가요? 감독님이 매주 운동장에 나오셔서 아이들에게 "절대 포기하지 마라", "네 뒤엔 팀이 있다"라고 소리치시는 모습을 보며 저도 큰 힘을 얻었습니다.

"넘어진 친구의 어깨를 토닥이는 법, 우리는 그라운드에서 인생을 배웁니다"

이: 제가 야구 인생 50년 넘게 하며 배운 게 하나 있습니다. 야구는 단순히 공을 치고 던지는 기술이 아니라, '사람을 살리는 스포츠'라는 점입니다. 제가 푸른고래리커버리센터와 수년간 인연을 맺으며 끝까지 함께하는 이유도 바로 그 '회복'의 힘을 직접 목격했기 때문입니다. 처음엔 배트 하나 휘두르는 것도 어색해하던 청년들이, 어느새 동료를 위해 베이스를 달리고 실수한 친구의 어깨를 토닥이는 모습을 보세요. 야구장이라는 작은 사회에서 규칙을 배우고 관계를 맺는 과정이 곧 사회로 나가는 연습인 거죠. 저는 이 야구의 힘이 우리 청년들을 반드시 일으켜 세울 거라 믿습니다.

김: 이번 책자 타이틀이 'SAFE AT HOME'인 이유도 거기에 있습니다. 야구에서 득점하려면 결국 홈으로 돌아와야 하듯, 우리 청년들에게 리커버리센터가 언제든 돌아와도 좋은 '안전한 집'이자 '든든한 공동체'가 되길 바랐습니다. 재단과 감독님이 곁을 지켜주신 덕분에 우리만의 '환대 철학'을 현장에서 더 뜨겁게 실현할 수 있었습니다.

"회복의 진정한 열매는, 나보다 더 아픈 이웃을 품을 수 있는 마음이다"

이: 정말 그렇습니다. 올해는 유독 기억에 남는 장면이 많습니다. 8월 동해 캠프에서 동료애를 쌓고, 10월 제주 전지훈련에서 지역 사회와 교류하며 성장하는 모습은 그야말로 역전의 드라마였습니다. 혼자만의 방에서 나와 햇볕을 쬐고, 이제는 타인과 호흡하는 법을 배운 것이죠. 감독인 제가 봐도 올해 크루들의 성장세는 정말 눈부셨습니다.

김: 맞아요~ 감독님, 요즘 우리 아이들 보면 정말 성장해가는 모습들이 보이기 시작합니다. 단순히 마음의 문을 여는 수준을 넘어, 이제는 스스로 공부하기 위해 대학 입학을 하기도하고, 취업 준비를 하며 사회로 나갈 채비를 하고 있어요. 특히 몇 명의 크루들에게 지역사회의 그룹홈 아동들, 탈북 청소년, 그리고 홀로 계신 어르신들을 직접 찾아가 도시락을 배달하는 일을 연결해 주었는데, 그 경험이 아이들을 완전히 바꿔놓았습니다.

자신과 또 다른 어려움에 놓인 사람들을 만나며 '나도 누군가에게 힘이 될 수 있다'는 사실을 깨달은 거죠. 회복을 넘어 이제는 당당한 사회의 일원으로서 '기여자(Contributor)'로 첫발을 내디딘 겁니다. 이 모습이야말로 우리가 그토록 바랐던 리커버리의 진정한 열매라고 생각해요. 벼랑 끝에 서 있던 우리 아이들에게 다시 뛸 수 있는 그라운드를 마련해 주신 예강희망키움재단과 감독님께 진심으로 감사한 마음뿐입니다."

이: 센터장님 말씀을 들으니 가슴이 뭉클해집니다. 야구에서도 가장 짜릿한 순간은 역전승이죠. 우리 아이들이 타인의 아픔을 돌보는 '기여자'로 성장했다는 건, 이미 인생이라는 경기에서 멋진 홈런을 날린 것이나 다름없습니다. 9회말 2아웃 상황에서도 포기하지 않으면 기회는 반드시 옵니다. 이 책자에 담긴 1년의 기록이 또 다른 고립 청년들에게 ‘희망의 신호탄’이 되길 바랍니다. 센터장님, 다음 시즌에도 우리 아이들이 사회의 4번 타자가 될 때까지 끝까지 달려봅시다!

김: 네, 경기는 아직 끝나지 않았습니다. 리커버리 야구단은 다음 시즌에도 이 따뜻한 동행을 멈추지 않겠습니다.

"Hands held together during the most difficult times, the power of solidarity"

Kim Ok-ran, Director of the Center (hereinafter referred to as Kim): A year has passed since we released the report. Wasn't our center facing a crisis in terms of operation at this time last year? It was such a difficult time to think about the existence of the center, but thanks to the support from the Yekang Hope Foundation, we were able to continue this miraculous program called the Recovery Baseball Team. These records would not have existed today without the foundation's deep trust and support for young people who are isolated.

Manager Lee Man-soo (hereinafter referred to as Lee Man-soo): That's what I mean. In baseball, when a relief pitcher appears when a team is in crisis, the atmosphere changes. The Yekang Hope Foundation has become a reliable relief pitcher and pacemaker for our young people. The center director and I have been meeting children on the field for several years now, but I wonder if there has been another year where we have worked closely with the foundation and operated stably like this year. Thanks to this, the crew was able to proudly find their place in a 'Stranger Ground' where they couldn't even make eye contact with each other.

Kim: I am very grateful to him. He has always been with us for a long time. How many years has it been already? It gave me a lot of strength to see him come out every week and yell at the kids, "Don't ever give up" and "There's a team behind you.""How to pat a fallen friend on the shoulder. We learn life on the ground"

Lee: There is one thing I have learned in my more than 50 years of baseball. Baseball is not just a technique of hitting and throwing a ball, it is a "sport that saves people." The reason I have been with the Blue Whale Recovery Center for many years is because I have witnessed the power of recovery firsthand. Look at the young people who were awkward even with swinging a bat at first, running on the base for their teammates and patting their friend on the shoulder. In a small society called a baseball field, the process of learning the rules and making relationships is the practice of going out into society. I believe that the power of this baseball will surely raise our young people up.

Kim: That's why the title of the booklet is "SAFE AT HOME." Just as you have to come home in the end to score in baseball, I wanted our young people to be a "safe home" and a "strong community" where the recovery center can come back at any time. Thanks to the foundation and the coach's support, we were able to realize our own "hospitality philosophy" even hotter on the spot.

"The true fruit of recovery is the heart to embrace a neighbor who is sicker than I am."

Lee: That's right. There were many memorable scenes this year. Building fellowship at the East Sea camp in August, interacting with the local community and growing up in the Jeju training camp in October was a reversal of drama. He came out of his own room to enjoy the sunshine, and now he has learned how to breathe with others. As a director, the crew has grown remarkably this year.

Kim: That's right. DEAR ABBY: When I see my children these days, I start to see them grow really well. Beyond just opening the door, I'm now entering college to study for myself and getting ready to go out into society, getting ready for a job. In particular, I connected a few crew members to visiting the community's group home children, North Korean defectors, and elderly people alone to deliver lunch boxes, and that experience completely changed the children.

Meeting himself and others in another difficult situation, he realized, "I can be a strength to someone." Beyond recovery, he has now taken his first step as a "contributor" as a part of a confident society. "I think this is the true fruit of the recovery that we hoped for so much. I am truly grateful to the Yekang Hope Foundation and the director for laying the ground for our children who were standing on the brink to run again."

Lee: Listening to the director of the center, I feel very touched. The most thrilling moment in baseball is the come-from-behind victory. The fact that our children have grown into "donors" who take care of the pain of others means that they have already hit a great home run in a game called life. Even with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, if you don't give up, chances will surely come. I hope the one-year record in this booklet will signal hope to other young people in isolation. Director of the center, let's continue to run until our children become the 4th batter of society next season!

Kim: Yes, the game is not over yet. The recovery team will not stop the warm companionship next season, either.
