오늘은 훌륭한 지도자인 박영숙감독을 소개하려고 한다. 박영숙 감독은 1960년생이니 우리나라 나이로 66세다. 적은 나이가 아님에도 불구하고 아직도 현장에서 선수들을 지도하고 있다.
라오스 최북단인 '보깨오'라는 도시에 들어가 어린 청소년들을 지도하고 있다. 라오스 지도를 보더라도 '보깨오'라는 도시는 비행기도 들어갈 수 없을 정도로 열악하고 척박한 도시다. 그런 척박한 도시에 박영숙 감독이 들어가 어린 청소년들 대상으로 양궁을 가르치고 있다.
앞에서도 이야기 했지만 라오스 루앙프라방에서 보깨오 까지 차로 가기 보다는 차라리 태국 '치앙라이'로 들어가 차로 2시간 달려 국경을 넘어 '보깨오'로 들어가는 것이 훨씬 가깝고 수월하다.
'보깨오'는 라오스 북부에 있는 주로, 주도는 '후아이싸이'이며 면적은 6,196km, 인구는 179,243명 (2015년 기준),이라고 한다.
최북쪽 작은 도시에 들어가 이름도 없이 빛도 없이 지난 수년 동안 부탄 대표팀 감독을 맡았고 다시 오지인 라오스 '보깨오'로 들어가 청소년들을 지도하고 있다. 박영숙 감독은 선수시절 화려한 경력을 갖고 있는 유명한 선수였다.
1979년 베를린 세계선수권 대회 단체전에서 금메달 시작으로 수많은 메달을 땄다. 김진호 선수와 서향순 선수하고 함께 한국 여자양궁 1세대 트로이카를 이뤘던 박영숙 감독은 선수생활을 접고 새롭게 지도자로 활동했다.
국가대표 후보선수 전임지도자를 거쳐 싱가포르 국가대표 감독, 이탈리아 여자국가대표감독으로 활동하다가 다시 싱가포르 대표님 감독을 맡았다. 이후 아프리카 극빈국 '말라위'에 봉사활동을 떠났다가 말라위 양궁선수를 지도해 최초로 리우 올림픽에 출전시키는 놀라운 기적을 일으켰다.
부탄 대표팀 감독을 2020년부터 시작해 작년 2025년까지 맡았다. 다시 작년 말에 오지 중에 오지인 라오스 최북쪽 '보깨오'로 들어가 청소년들을 지도하고 있다.
선수생활과 지도자 경력을 바탕으로 해 국제심판으로서 세계양궁연맹에 들어가 제 3의 인생을 출발했다.
박영숙 감독은 세계양궁에 끼친 탁월한 공헌과 활동으로 많은 세계 양궁인의 롤모델이 돼 멕시코 멕시코시티에서 열린 세계양궁연맹총회에서 수여하는 상을 받기도 했다.
박영숙 감독이 부탄 끝으로 다시 오지 중에 오지인 라오스 최북쪽 '보깨오' 들어가 지도자생활 하고 있다는 소식을 듣고 루앙프라방에서 한번 찾아가려고 했지만 차로 도저히 찾아갈 수 없을 정도로 먼 거리였다. 특히 도로 사정이 좋지 않아 최소 이틀을 잡아야 겨우 들어갈 수 있는 거리란다.
박영숙 감독은 아프리카 말라위, 그리고 부탄 또다시 척박한 라오스 '보깨오' 로 들어가 청소년들을 가르치고 있다. 같은 스포츠인으로서 지금도 나는 많은 것을 배우고 있다. 물론 인천에서 함께 만나 많은 이야기도 나누었지만 그녀의 폭넓은 야망은 나를 부끄럽게 만든다.
고생을 고생이라 생각하지 않고 오지의 땅을 축복의 땅으로 바라보는 박영숙감독은 세상이 감당치 못하는 사람 중 한사람이다.
이렇게 위대한 대한민국 스포츠인들이 세계 각국에 들어가 자신들이 갖고 있는 재능을 척박하고 전혀 경험해 보지 못한 그들에게 가르치는 그들은 진정한 스포츠인들이고 대한민국의 위대한 아들,딸들이다.
박영숙감독과 같이 도움이 필요한 곳에 기꺼이 나를 희생하더라도 그것을 기쁨과 감사로 여기는 후배 스포츠인들이 많이 배출되기를 바란다.

Today, I would like to introduce coach Park Young-sook, a great leader. Since Park was born in 1960, she is 66 years old in Korea. Despite her not being young, she is still coaching the players on the field.
The city of Baogeao, the northernmost part of Laos, is teaching young people. Even if you look at the Laos map, Baogeao is a poor and barren city where even airplanes cannot enter the city. Coach Park Young-sook is teaching archery to young people in such a barren city.
As mentioned earlier, it is much closer and easier to enter Thailand's Chiang Rai by car than to go from Luang Prabang in Laos to Bokkeo, and to cross the border into Bokkeo by car for two hours.
"Bogaeo" is a province in northern Laos, with a capital of "Huaishai" with an area of 6,196 km and a population of 179,243 people as of 2015.
He entered the northernmost small city, coached the Bhutan national team for the past few years without a name or light, and went back to the remote Laos 'Bogaeo' to guide the youth. Coach Park Young-sook was a famous player who had a brilliant career as a player.
Starting with gold at the 1979 World Championships in Berlin, Park won numerous medals. Coach Park Young-sook, who co-hosted the first-generation Korean women's archery team with Kim Jin-ho and Seo Hyang-soon, quit her career and became a new leader.
After serving as a full-time leader of the national team, he coached the Singaporean national team and the Italian women's national team before serving as the coach of the Singaporean national team. After that, he went on a volunteer work in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa, and led a Malawi archer to participate in the Rio Olympics for the first time.
He started coaching Bhutan from 2020 until 2025. Later last year, he went back to Baogeao, the northernmost part of Laos, to guide the youth.
Based on his career and leadership career, he joined the World Archery Federation as an international referee and started his third life.
Coach Park Young-sook became a role model for many world archers for her outstanding contributions and activities to world archery and received an award presented at the World Archery Federation General Assembly in Mexico City, Mexico.
I tried to visit him at Luang Prabang when I heard that Park Young-sook was living as a leader in the northernmost part of Laos while coming back from Bhutan, but it was so far away that I couldn't find him by car. In particular, the road conditions are not good that it takes at least two days to get in.
Coach Park Young-sook is teaching young people in Malawi, Africa, and then again in the barren Laos of Bhutan. As a sportsman, I am still learning a lot. Of course, we met in Incheon and talked a lot, but her broad ambition makes me feel ashamed.
Director Park Young-sook, who does not think of suffering as suffering and looks at the land of blessings, is one of the people the world can't handle.
It is true sportsmen and the great sons and daughters of Korea that these great Korean sportsmen enter countries around the world and teach them their talents to those who have never experienced them at all.
I hope there will be many junior sportsmen who consider it joy and appreciation even if they are willing to sacrifice themselves where they need help, such as coach Park Young-sook.
