< 위대한 K-문화 >
K-팝 문화는 이제 단순한 음악 장르를 넘어 하나의 거대한 세계적 현상이 되었다. 대표적으로 K - 팝 문화를 이끌어 온 BTS 영향은 우리가 피부로 느끼는 것보다 훨씬 위대함을 외국에 나가면 실감할 수 있을 정도다.
K-팝 영향으로 인해 K-드라마·K-영화·K-음식(푸드)·K-뷰티·K-여행 등이 대표적으로 언급되고 있다. 또한 한글(훈민정음)과 한국어 보급이 K-문화의 핵심 기반으로 자주 강조되고 있다.
여기에 요즈음 K-스포츠가 뒤를 이어 열심히 달려가고 있다. 지금도 잊을 수가 없는 것은 1998년도 처음 미국으로 지도자연수 받기 위해 갈 때 대한민국이라는 나라는 몰라도 88올림픽은 다 알고 있었다. 내가 처음 지도자 연수 받았을 때가 1998년이다. 클리블랜드 인디언스 산하에 있는 싱글A 팀인 '킹스톤 인디언스 팀'이다.
클리블랜드 인디언스 산하에 있는 싱글A 킹스톤 인디언스 팀은 '노스캐롤라이나 샬럿' 도시에서 차를 타고 3 - 4시간 들어가야 있는 너무나 작은 도시인 '킹스톤'이라는 도시가 있다. 이런 작은 도시에서 1년간 생활했다. 작은 도시다보니 자연스럽게 동양인을 찾아보기 힘든 도시다. 그러다보니 미국인 사람들이 신기했던지 나를 만나는 사람들마다 묻는 것이 '어느 나라 사람이냐?'는 것이다.
그럴 때마다 'South Korea' 라고 이야기 하면 잘 모를 때가 있다. 그러면 'Seoul Olympic' 라고 이야기 하면 그때서야 'Korea' 이라고 한다. 물론 알면서도 모른척 하는 사람도 있을 것이다.
이렇게 미국과 동남아로 내려가 야구를 갖고 청소년들에게 대한민국을 알리고 또 그들에게 꿈과 희망을 전달해 줄 수 있어 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 보람되고 좋은지 모른다.
이제 대한민국 스포츠는 한국을 넘어 아시아뿐만 아니라 전세계로 뻗어나가 세상 사람들로부터 주목받는 변화의 중심에 있다.
이런 변화는 뒤에서 화려함보다 묵묵함을 택한 많은 한국인 지도자들의 오랜 헌신이 있었기 때문이다. 그들이 뿌린 것은 단순한 승리 공식이 아니라, 선수들이 스스로 일어설 수 있는 힘과 정신, 그리고 자신감이었다. 작은 불씨처럼 시작된 그 노력은 오늘날 아시아를 넘어 전세계로 뻗어나가는 스포츠의 기반이 되고 있다.
단순한 국위선양이나 기술 전수를 넘어, 낮은 곳에서 함께 땀 흘리며 서로를 일으킨 사람 중심의 연대가 만들어낸 기적을 날마다 만들어 가고 있다. 그들이 남긴 훈련장의 열기는 오늘도 전세계에서 'K-스포츠'의 심장을 뛰게 하며, 내일을 밝히는 불빛으로 이어지길 희망해 본다.
< The Great K-Culture >
K-pop culture has now transcended a simple music genre to become a massive global phenomenon. The influence of BTS, which has led K-pop culture, is so profound that its greatness becomes truly apparent when you go abroad, far beyond what we feel in our daily lives.
K-dramas, K-movies, K-food, K-beauty, and K-travel are frequently cited as prime examples of K-culture's influence. Furthermore, the spread of Hangeul (Hunminjeongeum) and the Korean language is often highlighted as a core foundation of K-culture.
Recently, K-Sports has been following closely behind, making significant strides. One unforgettable memory is from 1998, when I first went to the US for coaching training. Even though people might not have known about South Korea, everyone knew about the 1988 Olympics. That was the year I first received coaching training. It was with the Kingston Indians, a Single-A team under the Cleveland Indians.
The Kingston Indians, a Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, are based in the town of Kingston. To get there, you have to drive 3-4 hours from the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. It's an incredibly small town. I lived in this tiny town for a year. Being such a small town, it was naturally difficult to find any other Asians. Consequently, Americans seemed intrigued, and everyone I met would ask, ‘What country are you from?’
Whenever I replied ‘South Korea,’ they often didn't recognize it. Only when I mentioned ‘Seoul Olympics’ did they finally say ‘Korea.’ Of course, some might have known but pretended not to.
Being able to go to places like the U.S. and Southeast Asia, using baseball to introduce young people to Korea and give them dreams and hope, is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling as someone involved in baseball.
Now, Korean sports are expanding beyond Korea, reaching not just Asia but the entire world, standing at the center of change and gaining global attention.
This transformation is possible because of the long-standing dedication of many Korean leaders who chose quiet perseverance over flashy prominence. What they sowed wasn't just a formula for victory, but the strength, spirit, and confidence for athletes to rise on their own. That effort, which began like a small spark, is now the foundation for sports reaching beyond Asia to the entire world.
Beyond mere national pride or technical transfer, they create miracles daily through people-centered solidarity—sweating together in humble places, lifting each other up. The passion they left on the training grounds continues to beat as the heart of ‘K-Sports’ worldwide today, and we hope it will shine as a light illuminating tomorrow.
