메이저리그 10년동안 87승 108패 방어율 4.25… 메이저리그에서 이 정도의 실력이면 정말 “ 대단한 선수다 “라고 이야기합니다. 정상적인 투수가 이 정도의 실력이면 잘 한다고 하는데 하물며 오른손이 없는 투수가 이 정도의 실력이라면 정말 대단한 선수입니다. 그 투수가 바로 “ 조막손 짐 에버트투수 “ 입니다.
오른손이 없는 일반 사람으로서 그것도 메이저리그에서 선발투수가 된다는 것은 상식적으로도 불가능한 일입니다. 그러나 짐 에버트는 어린시절부터 단 한번도 자기의 불행에 대해 불평하거나 누구를 원망하지 않고 본인이 갖고 있는 꿈을 향해 평생을 달려왔다고 합니다.
88서울올림픽대회에서 결승전 미국대표로 나와 일본 팀을 상대로 당당하게 팀의 에이스로 던져 일본 팀을 5 : 3으로 이겨 금메달을 목에 걸었습니다. 이것뿐만이 아닙니다. 투수로서 평생 한번 있을까? 하는 노 히트 노런을 양키스 팀 시절 클리블랜드 인디언스 팀 상대로 1993년 이루었습니다. 그것뿐만 아니라 1991년 양키스 팀에서 18승이란 놀라운 성적을 올려 그 해 사이영상 후보에 올라가는 영광을 받기도 했습니다.
여기서 우리가 배워야 할 점은 그 선수가 장애를 뛰어넘은 성공을 이룬 노력도 중요하겠지만 그 이전에 먼저 어떤 일을 할 때 무엇을 바라보느냐 하는 관점입니다.
짐은 어떤 어려움과 난관이 있더라도 늘 최고의 영광인 메이저리그에 입성해서 수많은 관중이 보는 가운데 당당하게 마운드에 서서 던지는 자기의 모습을 상상하고 꿈꾸어 왔다고 합니다. 그래서 야구장에 나갈 때마다 오른손이 없다는 것을 바라보기 보다 어린시절부터 가졌던 자신의 꿈을 바라보며 운동장에 나갔다고 합니다.
이 세상에서 가장 불행한 삶은 남하고 비교하는 인생입니다. 내가 가진 것을 바라보지 않고 내가 가지지 못한 것을 아쉬워하다가는 결코 꿈을 이룰 수 없습니다.

Over 10 years in the Major Leagues, he posted an 87-108 record with a 4.25 ERA... In the Major Leagues, this level of performance truly makes someone a “great player.” If a normal pitcher achieves this level, it's considered good, but for a pitcher without a right hand to reach this level makes him an absolutely remarkable player. That pitcher is none other than “Jim Everett, the one-handed pitcher.”
For an ordinary person without a right hand to become a starting pitcher in the Major Leagues is, by all common sense, impossible. Yet Jim Everett, from his childhood, never once complained about his misfortune or blamed anyone else. He spent his entire life running toward the dream he held.
At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he took the mound as the ace pitcher for the U.S. team in the final against Japan, pitching with confidence to lead his team to a 5-3 victory and win the gold medal. That wasn't all. In 1993, while playing for the Yankees, he achieved a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians – a feat a pitcher might only dream of accomplishing once in a lifetime. Moreover, in 1991, he posted an astonishing 18 wins with the Yankees, earning the honor of being nominated for the Cy Young Award that year.
What we must learn here is that while the effort to overcome disability and achieve success is important, even more crucial is the perspective of what one focuses on when undertaking any endeavor.
Jim reportedly always imagined and dreamed of himself standing proudly on the mound, pitching in front of countless spectators in the ultimate glory of the Major Leagues, no matter what difficulties or obstacles he faced. So, every time he stepped onto the baseball field, rather than focusing on the fact he had no right hand, he focused on the dream he'd held since childhood.
The most unfortunate life in this world is one spent comparing yourself to others. If you don't look at what you have and instead lament what you lack, you will never achieve your dreams.
