2월 10일 이날은 사우나 멤버들이 나를 위해 한우를 사 준다며 저녁을 같이 했다. 사우나 멤버들이 곧 있을 동남아 야구를 위해 또다시 힘든 과정을 홀로 동남아로 내려가 재능기부 한다며 값비산 한우를 사준다. 저녁을 맛나게 먹는데 단체손님이 들어오며 나를 알아보고 반갑게 손을 잡는다. 이들 단체 손님은 '포스코' 다니는 임원들이다.
사진을 찍으면서 나의 손을 놓지 않는다. 한분은 어린시절에 삼성라이온즈 어린이 회원이었다며 사진을 고이 간직하고 있는 사진을 직접 보여준다. 요즈음 경기가 많이 어려운 가운데에서도 우리가 가는 한우집은 예약하지 않으면 갈 수 없을 정도로 언제나 부쩍인다.
점잖은 '포스코' 임원들이 나를 보더니 갑자기 동심의 세계로 되돌아간 느낌을 받았는지 자리를 떠나지 않는다. 이 장면을 보던 사장님이 고이 간직한 사인볼을 선물로 두개를 건네준다. 한우고기 주인님이 사인볼 갖고 있는것에 솔직히 많이 놀랬다. 먼저 사인볼을 선물 받았던 임원이 소리 지르며 기뻐하니 옆에 있던 분들이 자기들도 사인볼 달란다.
다시 이 광경을 보던 사장님이 또다시 사인볼 3개 가지고 나온다. 내가 너무 놀래서 어떻게 사인볼 갖고 있느냐? 물어보니 자기 식당에 야구 선수들이 자주 온다고 한다. 그래서 한번에 사인볼 40만원치 사서 부모님과 함께 오는 어린아이에게들에게 사인볼을 선물로 하나씩 준다고 한다. 그리고 젊은 아가씨나 청년들에게도 사인볼을 선물로 준다고 한다.
이날 8명이 되는 '포스코' 임원들이 하나씩 사인볼을 다 받았다. 임원들이 사장님이 공짜로 사인볼 하나씩 선물하는 것에 감사해 그 자리에서 10만원을 주면서 '이만수 감독님 사인볼 몇개 받아 어린아이'들에게 주라며 돈을 건낸다.
저녁식사 하면서 사장님과 이야기 할 기회가 있어 사장님의 '한우'에 대한 자부심과 경영철학에 대해 많은 이야기를 듣게 되었다. 사장님의 경영철학을 듣고 요즈음처럼 불경기에서도 불황을 타지 않고 꾸준하게 식당을 잘 운영하는 것에 감탄이 저절로 났다.
무엇보다 오랜 식당운영으로 인해 한우고기 만큼은 본인이 직접 관리하고 조달한다고 한다. 비록 이문이 많이 나지 않더라도 언제나 최고의 고기를 손님한테 대접하고 또 요즈음처럼 물가가 많이 올라도 가격을 올리지 않고 최선을 다해 손님한테 최고의 고기를 대접한다고 한다. 그러면서 하는 이야기가 '이문을 많이 남기기 위해 장사를 하게 되면 결국 오래 가지 않는다며 언제나 자기는 초심을 잃지 않기 위해 날마다 노력하고 최선을 다 한다'고 한다.
푸짐하게 저녁을 먹고 계산하려고 하는데 '포스코' 임원들이 너무 고맙다며 먼저 우리 테이블의 계산을 다했다. 이날 먹었던 한우는 생각보다 계산이 많이 나왔을 텐데... 이날도 식당 테이블이 만석이다.
이날 '포스코' 임원과 사우나 멤버들 그리고 식당 사장님과 점원들 모두 합쳐 가장 기뻤던 사람은 솔직히 나였다. 지난 56년 동안 한길로 달려오며 아마추어 선수시절과 프로야구 선수 그리고 지도자로 달려오며 이제는 아무도 알아주는 사람 없는 일흔살이 되어가는 나를 여전히 반겨주고 함께 옛 추억들을 이야기 할 수 있어 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 기뻤는지 모른다.
나는 지난 2014년 10월말에 프로야구 SK와이번스 팀 끝으로 현장에서 나온지 벌써 12년이 되었다. 지난 56년 동안 아마추어와 프로야구 선수생활, 그리고 다시 미국 마이너리그와 메이저리그, 또다시 한국으로 돌아와 SK와이번스 코치와 감독생활을 끝으로 소위 현장을 떠나 지내고 있다.
오로지 승리를 위한 야구를 하다가 새로이 인도차이나반도로 내려가 야구를 보급한지도 어느덧 12년이 되었다. 모든것들이 다 불가능 해 보이고 할 수 없을 것이라고 생각했던 일들이었지만 도전하고 할 수 있다는 자신감을 갖고 마주했을 때 놀랍게도 하나 둘 이루어지고 이루어 가고 있다. 야구인의 한사람으로서 너무나 큰 보람을 느끼고 가슴 벅차도록 감격스럽다.
불가능은 도전하지 않고 시도하지 않았기 때문에 불가능이라는 말이 생겼는지 모른다. 물론 할 수 없는 것도 있을 수 있지만 그런 불가능도 나의 이성적 판단이 아닌 도전하는 마음으로 한걸음 내딛고 시작하니 12년이란 시간들을 통해 내가 계획하고 내가 생각했던 것보다 더 아름답게 이루어지는 현실을 보게 되었다.
지난 시간들을 되돌아 볼 때면 야구인으로서 야구의 틀안에서만 모든 상황들을 바라보고 생각하고 이해하며 살아왔다. 그러나 현장을 떠난 요즈음 이렇게 여유를 갖고 편안한 마음으로 주민들과 함께 어울리며 생활하니 새로운 세상에서의 기쁨과 행복을 누리게 되었다.
현장에서 56년 동안 있었지만 야구현장을 떠나 새롭게 만나는 사람들과 함께하는 것이 처음에는 어색하고 낯설게도 느껴졌지만 12년이 지난 지금 나에게는 이시간들이 선물과도 같은 시간이 되었다.
내가 아직 현장에만 있었다면 아마 이런 좋은 경험도 한번 해보지 못하고 인생을 살았을지 모른다. 시간이 갈수록 좋은 사람을 만나고 사귀는 일들이 힘들어지는 요즘 세상에 같은 동네 같은 주거 울타리에서 만나 인연을 이어가는 것이 얼마나 소중하고 좋은 일인지 참 감사하다.
옷깃만 스쳐도 인연이라는 말이 있듯이 사우나에서 특별한 인연으로 만난 좋은 이웃들과 만들어가는 지금의 시간들 56년 동안 야구장에서 느낀 행복과는 다른 새로움 기쁨과 행복으로 인해 나는 또다른 감사의 삶을 살아가고 있다.
이날 사장님의 경영철학을 보고 들으면서 나 또한 나의 삶이 다하는 그날까지 야구인의 한사람으로서 나의 자리에서 프로처럼 최선을 다해 달려갈 것이다.

On Feb. 10, the sauna members had dinner with me, saying they would buy me Korean beef. The sauna members went down to Southeast Asia alone for the upcoming baseball season and bought me Korean beef from Paegibisan, saying they are donating their talents. While we were having a delicious dinner, a group guest came in and recognized me and happily held my hand. The group guests are executives who are attending POSCO.
While taking pictures, he does not let go of his hand. One person shows the picture of himself who keeps the picture, saying that he was a member of the Samsung Lions when he was a child. Despite the economic difficulties these days, the Korean beef restaurant we are going to is always increasing to the point where we cannot go unless we make a reservation.
The gentle POSCO executives look at me and don't leave because they suddenly feel like they have returned to the world of innocence. The boss, who was watching this scene, hands me two signed balls as gifts. Honestly, I was very surprised that the owner of the Korean beef had the signed ball. First, the executive who was presented with the signed ball screamed and was happy, so the people next to him also want the signed ball.
The boss, who was watching this scene again, comes out with three sign balls again. I was so surprised that I asked, "How do you have an autograph ball?" and I heard that baseball players come to his restaurant often. That's why they buy 400,000 won worth of autograph balls at a time and give signed balls to children who come with their parents as gifts. And they also give autographed balls to young girls and young people as gifts.
On this day, eight POSCO executives received all the signed balls one by one. The executives thank the president for giving them one free signed ball, and give it to the children by giving them 100,000 won on the spot.
I had the opportunity to talk to the boss over dinner, and I heard a lot about the boss's pride in 'Korean beef' and management philosophy. When I listened to the boss's management philosophy, I naturally was amazed to run the restaurant well without experiencing a recession like today.
Above all, due to the long-term restaurant operation, it is said that the Korean beef is managed and sourced by itself. Even if there are not many doors, they always serve the best meat to customers, and even if prices rise as much as they do today, they do their best to serve the best meat to customers without raising prices. At the same time, he said, "If you do business to leave a lot of doors, it won't last long, and you always try and do your best not to lose your original intention."
I was going to pay after a hearty dinner, but POSCO executives paid for our table first, saying thank you so much. The Korean beef we had on this day must have been more expensive than expected... The restaurant table is also full on this day.
Honestly, I was the happiest person for POSCO executives, sauna members, restaurant owners and clerks. I've been running down the road for the past 56 years as an amateur player, professional baseball player and leader, and I'm still glad as a baseball player to welcome me and talk about old memories with no one who knows me now turning 70.
It's already been 12 years since I left the scene at the end of October 2014 with the end of a professional baseball SK Wyverns team. For the past 56 years, I've been away from the scene after playing amateur and professional baseball, then returning to the U.S. minor leagues and major leagues, and again to Korea, where I've been coaching and managing the SK Wyverns.
It's been 12 years since I played baseball only for victory and then went down to the Indochina Peninsula to spread baseball. Everything seemed impossible and I thought I couldn't do it, but when I face it with confidence that I can challenge myself and do it, I am surprisingly accomplished one by one. As a baseball player, I feel very rewarded and am deeply moved.
I don't know if the word impossible came about because I didn't try without challenging myself. Of course, there may be things I can't do, but as I took one step forward with a challenging mind rather than with my rational judgment, I came to see the reality that I planned and achieved more beautifully than I thought through the 12 years.
Looking back on the past times, as a baseball player, I have seen, thought, and understood all situations only within the framework of baseball. However, today when I left the field, I enjoyed joy and happiness in a new world to live with the residents with such a relaxed and comfortable mind.
Although I have been at the scene for 56 years, it felt awkward and unfamiliar at first to leave the baseball scene and be with new people, but 12 years later, these times have become like gifts to me.
If I had only been in the field, I might have lived my life without having such a good experience. I am so grateful for how precious and good it is to meet and continue our relationship in the same neighborhood-like residential fence these days as it becomes difficult to meet and make friends with good people as time goes by.
Just as there is a saying that it is a relationship just by touching the collar, I am living another life of gratitude because of the new joy and happiness that is different from the happiness I felt at the ballpark for 56 years.
Watching and listening to the president's management philosophy on this day, I will also do my best as a baseball player like a professional in my place until the day my life ends.
