지난 1월 8일 김길현 교수님으로부터 카톡이 왔다. 김길현 교수님은 전 이화여대교수를 역임했고, 전 캄보디아 왕립프놈펜대학교 교수를 역임했다. 현재는 목사님으로 활동하시고 있다. 많은 시간이 지났지만 지금도 나는 편안하게 교수님으로 부르고 있다.
교수님의 야구 사랑은 솔직히 야구인들보다 더 야구를 사랑하시는 분이다. 나또한 교수님 만나 야구인으로서 많은 배움을 받았고 또 지금도 여전히 교수님으로부터 도움을 받고 있다.
교수님은 캄보디아에 야구를 본격적으로 전파한 인물이다. 2000년 중반 캄보디아로 넘어가 선교와 교육이라는 두가지 목표로 4 - 5개의 교회를 세우고, 캄보디아 왕립프놈펜대학에서 블루웨이브라는 캄보디아 첫 야구팀을 창단했다.
그리고 캄보디아 시민권 가지고 있어 큰 교육부지를 소유할 수 있었다. 그곳에 이화재단 이화슬렁학교를 세우고 그곳 부지에 허구연총재를 만나 시설비 1억 정도를 받아 허구연필드 야구장을 건설하기도 했다.
지금도 김길현 교수를 만나본 교민과 캄보디아 야구인들에게 모두 큰 존경을 받는 인물이라며 입을 모은다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 교수님을 만나면서 나를 감격하게 한것은 비야구인이며 교수인데 어떻게 학생들을 가르치게 되었는지 늘 궁금했다.
캄보디아 최초의 야구팀을 2005년 9월에 창단한 김길현 교수는 프놈펜 왕립대에서 생물학을 가르치며 자원봉사 활동을 했다. 김길현 교수는 한국에서 잘 나가는 전 이화여대 약학과 교수였다. 우연찮게 친구의 소개로 방문한 캄보디아에서 김길현 교수는 새로운 ‘도전'을 하게 되었다고 한다. 김길현 교수님의 이야기에 의하면 “오랜 내전과 ‘킬링필드’로 불리는 지식인 대학살로 인해 교육이 마비된 캄보디아에서 대학을 설립하고 싶었다”며 주위의 만류에도 불구하고 캄보디아 땅을 밟았다고 한다.
김길현 교수님의 말에 의하면 그당시 캄보디아 사람들은 지쳐있었고 꿈도 희망도 버린지 오래였다고 한다. 나라는 혼란스러웠고 법은 무용지물이었으며 캄보디아 사람들이 외출하는 것도 두려워 했다고 한다.. 김 교수님은 이들에게 “희망을 주고 싶었다. 그리고 규칙과 질서를 가르쳐주고 싶었다”며 “그런 면에서 야구가 가장 적합하다고 생각했다”며 그 당시를 회고했다.
김길현 교수는 야구의 명문 팀인 대구 경북고등학교를 나와 자연스럽게 야구를 좋아하게 되었고 또 야구 규칙에 대해서도 훤히 깨뚫고 있었다고 한다. 그래서 학생들에게 처음해보는 야구를 가르치게 되었는데 인기있는 교수의 말에 흔쾌히 처음해보는 야구에 도전하게 되었다고 한다.
“야구는 혼자서 하는 운동이 아니다. 정해진 규칙이 있고, 규칙을 지키지 않으면 아웃이다. 더 이상 경기에 참가할 수 없다. 또 야구에는 희생이라는 개념이 들어있다. 희생번트가 있고, 희생플라이가 있다. 팀을 위해 자신을 희생할 줄 알아야 한다“ 김길현 교수님이 야구를 처음해보는 학생들에게 가장 많이 강조한 부분이라고 한다.
고등학교 시절과 대학시절 동아리에서 야구를 즐겼던 김길현 교수님은 전문적이진 않지만 해박한 야구상식을 갖고 있었다고 한다. 야구를 얼마나 좋아했으면 경북고등학교 시절 운동장에서 연습하고 있는 선수들의 훈련을 몇시간이고 지켜보곤 했단다. 김길현 교수님은 대학시절부터 간직해 온 야구 교본을 다시 꺼내들었고 야구를 처음 접해보는 선수들에게 여러모로 부족했지만 정확한 기술을 가르쳐주고 싶었다고 한다.
김길현 교수님이 처음 만든 팀은 프놈펜 왕립대 재학생들로 구성 되었다고 한다. 이당시 김 교수님이 선수들을 운영할 때 학교로부터 어떤 도움도 받을 수 없었다고 한다. 처음 야구를 시작할 때 김 교수님은 학교 옆 공터에 손수 잡초를 뜯고 라인을 그려가며 야구장을 만들었다고 한다.
야구하기 위해서는 가장 먼저 장비가 필요했다. 캄보디아에서는 야구를 해본적도 없고 본적도 없기 때문에 야구 도구를 구한다는 것은 상상도 할 수 없었던 시절이라고 한다. 그래서 교수님은 대학시절 함께 야구를 즐겼던 친구들에게 일일이 전화해서 도움을 청했다고 한다. 이렇게 친구들과 지인들의 도움으로 인해 야구를 시작하게 되었다.
이렇게 시작하게 된 김길현 교수님은 이번에 “야구보다 야구선수”라는 책을 직접 집필하셨다. 일단 책이 나오기 전에 교수님이 먼저 집필한 내용들을 보내 주셔서 다 읽었다. 교수님이 집필한 내용은 기술적인 것 보다는 인문학에 가까운 책이라고 보면 된다. 우리가 이 세상을 살아가면서 어떻게 살아가야 하며 어떻게 사회에 봉사해야 함을 적은 내용이다.
이번에 김길현 교수님이 책을 내면서 교수님의 마음을 적은 내용을 여기에 옮겨 본다.
“야구를 즐기고 사랑한다는 것은 참으로 즐겁고 아름다운 일입니다. 하루의 끝에서, 혹은 삶의 분주함 한가운데서 많은 무리가 야구장을 향합니다. 그곳에서 선수들은 한 경기, 한 이닝마다 자신이 가진 모든 것을 던져 올립니다.
공 하나에 실린 땀과 숨, 포기하지 않겠다는 다짐이 하늘을 가를 때, 관중은 그 궤적을 따라 웃고, 탄식하며, 어느새 같은 리듬으로 숨을 쉽니다. 그 장면은 언제 보아도 낯설지 않으면서도 늘 새롭고, 그래서 경이롭습니다.
선수에게 한 경기는 단순한 승부가 아니라 인생의 한 장면입니다. 그 위에는 지난 시간의 연습과 상처, 그리고 다음 순간을 향한 희망이 겹겹이 포개어져 있습니다. 관중 또한 마찬가지입니다. 그들은 그 시간에 마음을 내어주고, 감정을 내어주며, 다시 돌아오지 않을 오늘의 열정을 기꺼이 바칩니다. 야구는 그렇게, 그라운드와 관중석을 넘어 서로의 삶을 잠시 하나로 묶어 줍니다.
그러나 야구가 그저 단순한 오락으로만 남는다면, 그토록 많은 시간과 감정이 오가는 이 풍경은 어딘가 아쉽지 않을까요? 야구로부터 단순한 재미 이상의 의미를 기대하는 것은, 결코 과한 바람도, 순진한 욕심도 아닐 것입니다.
야구가 ‘문화’로 자리 잡는다는 것은, 단지 좋아하는 사람이 많아졌다는 뜻을 넘어섭니다. 야구는 한 시대의 정서를 담아내는 그릇이 될 수 있고, 서로 다른 모양의 삶을 살아가는 이들을 잇는 다리가 될 수도 있으며, 때로는 공동체의 얼굴을 비추는 조용한 거울이 될 수 있습니다. 그것은 곧 야구가 사회에 깊이 스며들어 지속적인 영향을 미치고, 때로는 사회의 변화를 이끄는 힘이 된다는 뜻입니다.
야구를 사랑하는 한 사람으로서, 필자는 이 경이로운 스포츠가 우리 사회의 흩어진 에너지를 모아 선한 방향의 변화를 만들어 가기를 바랍니다. 승부를 넘어 존중을 배우고, 경쟁 속에서도 품위를 잃지 않으며, 패배의 자리에서도 다시 일어나는 힘을 나누는 문화가 되기를 소망합니다. 더 성숙한 공동체를 향해 나아가게 하는 원동력이 되기를 바라는 것입니다.
물론 이런 변화는 저절로 이루어지지 않습니다. 선수만의 몫도, 팬만의 책임도 아닙니다. 그라운드 위에서 최선을 다하는 이들과, 관중석에서 끝까지 함께하는 이들이 같은 사명을 품고 서로를 비출 때, 야구는 비로소 한 사회를 움직이는 힘이 됩니다.
이 책에는 야구장에서, 그리고 그 울타리 밖에서 탄생한 아름답고도 깊은 감동의 이야기들을 담았습니다. 누군가의 작은 배려, 두려움을 넘어선 용기, 그리고 인간에 대한 끝내 놓지 않은 믿음이 모여 만들어낸 이야기들입니다. 필자는 이 서사들을 통해 야구가 어떻게 단순한 승부를 넘어 사람을 세우고, 꿈을 심으며, 세상을 조금씩 바꿀 수 있는지를 말하고 싶었습니다.
아쉽게도 이 책에 실린 이야기들의 대부분은 미국에서의 사례들입니다. 한국의 이야기를 더 풍성히 담아내지 못한 것은 전적으로 필자의 부족함 때문입니다. 그럼에도 이 책이 작은 불씨가 되어, 우리 사회 곳곳에 숨어 있는 야구의 아름다운 이야기들이 발견되고, 기록되고, 다음 세대에게 전해지기를 기대합니다.
이 책이 야구를 사랑하는 모든 이들에게 조용한 영감의 씨앗이 되기를 바랍니다. 야구를 통해 자라나는 아이들의 마음에 승리보다 소중한 가치를 심어 주고, 그 영향력이 다른 스포츠와 삶의 영역으로 넓어지기를 소망합니다.
언젠가 사람들이 이렇게 말하는 날이 오면 좋겠습니다.
“야구를 하는 사람, 야구를 사랑하는 사람은 참 괜찮은 사람들이다.”
야구는 결국 ‘사람 이야기’입니다.

On January 8, Professor Kim Gil-hyun sent me a message. Professor Kim Gil-hyun served as a former professor of Ewha Womans University and a former professor of the Royal Phnom Penh University in Cambodia. He is currently working as a pastor. A lot of time has passed, but I still call him a professor comfortably.
The professor's love for baseball is honestly someone who loves baseball more than baseball people. I also met the professor and learned a lot as a baseball player, and I am still receiving help from him.
He spread baseball to Cambodia in earnest. In mid-2000, he moved to Cambodia and established four to five churches with two goals of missionary work and education, and established Cambodia's first baseball team called Blue Wave at the Royal Phnom Penh University in Cambodia.
And because he had Cambodian citizenship, he was able to own a large educational site. He established the Ewha Foundation Ewha Sleong School there, met with the president of Heo Gu-yeon on the site, and received about 100 million won in facility expenses to build the Heo Gu Yeon Field Ballpark.
Even now, both Korean and Cambodian baseball players who met Professor Kim Gil-hyun say they are highly respected. As I mentioned earlier, it was Villagu and a professor who impressed me when I met the professor, and I always wondered how I got to teach students.
Professor Kim Gil-hyun, who founded Cambodia's first baseball team in September 2005, volunteered while teaching biology at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Professor Kim Gil-hyun was a former professor of pharmacy at Ewha Womans University, which is popular in Korea. Professor Kim Gil-hyun is said to have a new 'challenge' in Cambodia, where he accidentally visited due to the introduction of his friend. According to Professor Kim Gil-hyun, "I wanted to establish a university in Cambodia, where education was paralyzed due to a long civil war and the massacre of intellectuals called 'Killing Field,'" he said, stepping on Cambodian soil despite his reluctance.
According to Professor Kim Gil-hyun, Cambodians were tired at that time, and it had been a long time since they gave up their dreams and hopes. The country was confused, the law was useless, and Cambodians were afraid to go out. Professor Kim recalled that time, saying, "I wanted to give them hope. And I wanted to teach them rules and order," and "I thought baseball was the most appropriate in that sense."
Professor Kim Gil-hyun graduated from Daegu Gyeongbuk High School, a prestigious baseball team, and naturally became fond of baseball and was well aware of the rules of baseball. Therefore, he taught his students baseball for the first time, and he was willing to challenge baseball for the first time at the words of a popular professor.
"Baseball is not a sport that you do alone. There are certain rules, and if you don't follow the rules, you're out. You can no longer participate in games. Also, baseball has the concept of sacrifice. There is a sacrifice bunt, there is a sacrifice fly. You have to sacrifice yourself for the team," Professor Kim Gil-hyun said. This is the part that he emphasized the most to students who are new to baseball.
Professor Kim Gil-hyun, who enjoyed baseball in his high school and college clubs, said that he was not professional but had a deep sense of baseball. He must have loved baseball so much that he used to watch players practice on the field for hours when he was in high school in Gyeongbuk. Professor Kim Gil-hyun said that he took out the baseball manuals that he had cherished since college and wanted to teach accurate techniques to players who were new to baseball, although they were not good enough in many ways.
Professor Kim Gil-hyun's first team is said to consist of students from the Royal University of Phnom Penh. At that time, when Professor Kim was running the players, he was not able to get any help from the school. When he first started playing baseball, Professor Kim is said to have built a baseball field by hand by weeding weeds and drawing lines in a vacant lot next to the school.
To play baseball, equipment was the first thing I needed. In Cambodia, since I have never played baseball and seen it before, it is said that it was a time when I could not have imagined getting baseball tools. The professor said that he called each of his friends who enjoyed baseball together in college and asked for help. With the help of my friends and acquaintances, I started playing baseball.
Professor Kim Gil-hyun, who started this way, wrote a book called "Baseball Players rather than Baseball." First of all, before the book came out, the professor sent me the contents he wrote first and read them all. What the professor wrote is more of a book that is closer to the humanities than technical. It is written about how we live in this world and how we should serve society.
This time, Professor Kim Gil-hyun will transfer the contents of the professor's heart while releasing a book.
To enjoy and love baseball is such a joy and beauty. At the end of the day, or in the middle of the busyness of life, many groups head to the ballpark. There, players throw everything they have at every game, every inning.
When the sweat, breath, and determination not to give up on a single ball cut through the sky, the audience laughs, sighs, and breathes in the same rhythm. The scene is always new and amazing while not unfamiliar to see it anytime.
For a player, a game is not just a game but a scene in his or her life. It is layered with the practice, wounds, and hope for the next moment. The same is true for spectators. They give up their hearts in the time, give up their emotions, and are willing to dedicate today's passion that will never come back. Baseball, like that, briefly unites each other's lives beyond the ground and stands.
But if baseball remains just an entertainment, isn't it regrettable that there is so much time and emotion going on? Expecting something more than just fun from baseball will never be too much of an overdrive or an innocent greed.
Baseball's establishment as a 'culture' goes beyond just having more people to like.
