프로야구 선수시절에 보았던 영화가 정말 현실이 되다니... 2021년 8월 13일(한국시간) 미국 아이오와주 다이나어스빌의 옥수수밭에 조성된 꿈의 구장에서 시카고 화이트삭스와 뉴욕 양키스가 맞붙어 영화가 현실이 되었다.
1989년작 영화 “꿈의 구장“의 개봉 30주년에 맞춰 메이저리그 사무국이 마련한 프로젝트다. 케빈 코스트너가 주연한 작품으로 화이트삭스의 열혈 팬이었던 아버지가 세상을 떠난 뒤 주인공은 아이오와에서 농장을 운영하며 지낸다.
그는 “옥수수밭에 야구장을 지으면 그들이 온다“는 계시를 받고 “꿈의 구장“을 만들기 시작한다. 그리고 그 곳에 조 잭슨 등 1919년 시카고 화이트 삭스에서 뛰었던 선수들이 찾아온다는 내용이다.
미국이란 나라는 거대한 나라다보니 자동차를 타고 가도 끝이 보이지 않을 정도로 옥수수밭 일 때가 많다. 내가 활동했던 '시카고 화이트 삭스 팀' 무대는 시카고에 있다. 일리노이주 옆에는 아이오와주 위로는 위스콘신주 밑으로는 미주리주 오른쪽으로는 인디아나주가 있다.
시카고에서 생활 할 때 가족을 데리고 몇시간을 달려 '아이오와주 다이어스빌'의 옥수수밭에 세워진 야구장을 구경하기 위해 달려갔던 기억이 있다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 '아이오와주'는 많은 옥수수밭이 끝이 없어 가도가도 옥수수밭이었던 기억이 있다.
내가 유난히 케빈 코스트너가 주연한 영화 “꿈의 구장“을 좋아하게 된것은 다름이 아니라 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀 선수들 배경으로 영화화 했기 때문이다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 2000년도에 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 지도자로 활동하고 나서 그 다음해인 2001년도에 가족들과 함께 구경갔던 기억이 있다. 이때 구경 갔을 때만 해도 2021년처럼 화려한 야구장이 아니었고 초라한 세트장만 남아 있었을 뿐이다.
1901년 화이트 스타킹즈라는 구단명으로 아메리칸 리그에 참가했다. 1904년 시카고 화이트삭스로 이름을 바꾸었다. 1906년과 1917년에 월드 시리즈 우승을 했다. 그러나 1919년에는 신시내티 레즈와 붙은 월드 시리즈의 승부 조작 사건으로 팀의 주전 8명이 제명당한, 이른바 블랙삭스 스캔들 사건 이후 88년 동안이나 우승을 하지 못하였다.
블랙삭스 스캔 사건 이후 무려 88년 만인 지난 2005년도에 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀이 월드시리즈에서 우승을 했다. 이때 나는 지도자로 활동하고 있었던 시절이라 88년 만에 월드시리즈에서 우승했을 때의 감동과 감격은 나의 삶에서 영원히 잊을 수 없을 것 같다.
월드시리즈에서 우승했을 때보다 100층이 넘는 시카고 다운타운 시어스 타워에서 앞이 보이지 않을 정도로 엄청난 양의 오색찬란한 색종이들이 쏟아질 때의 감격은 나의 삶에서 영원히 잊을 수 없다.
이날 온 가족과 함께 영광의 카퍼레이드를 가졌다.

The movie I saw during my professional baseball career has truly become reality... On August 13, 2021 (Korean time), the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees faced off at the Field of Dreams ballpark built in a cornfield in Dinaersville, Iowa, USA, making the movie a reality.
This project was organized by Major League Baseball to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1989 film “Field of Dreams.” Starring Kevin Costner, the film follows a man who runs a farm in Iowa after his father, a passionate White Sox fan, passes away.
He receives a revelation: “If you build it in the cornfield, they will come.” He begins constructing the “Field of Dreams.” The story unfolds as players from the 1919 Chicago White Sox, including Joe Jackson, arrive at the field.
America is a vast country, so when you're driving through cornfields, it often feels like there's no end in sight. The stage for the ‘Chicago White Sox team’ I was active with is in Chicago. Next to Illinois is Iowa, above is Wisconsin, below is Missouri, and to the right is Indiana.
I remember when I lived in Chicago, driving for hours with my family to see the baseball field built in the cornfields of Dyersville, Iowa. As I mentioned earlier, Iowa has endless cornfields; I recall driving on and on through nothing but cornfields.
My particular fondness for the movie “Field of Dreams,” starring Kevin Costner, stems precisely from its portrayal of the Chicago White Sox team as its backdrop. What remains unforgettable is that after I began coaching for the Chicago White Sox in 2000, I visited the stadium with my family the following year, in 2001. Back then, the stadium wasn't the grand, modern facility it is in 2021; only a modest set remained.
In 1901, the team joined the American League under the name the White Stockings. They changed their name to the Chicago White Sox in 1904. They won the World Series in 1906 and 1917. However, after the so-called Black Sox Scandal in 1919, where eight starting players were banned for fixing the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, they went 88 years without a championship.
After a staggering 88-year drought following the Black Sox Scandal, the Chicago White Sox finally won the World Series in 2005. At that time, I was active as a coach, and the emotion and thrill of winning the World Series after 88 years is something I will never forget in my lifetime.
Even more unforgettable than the World Series victory itself was the overwhelming sight of a massive, dazzling shower of colorful confetti pouring down from the 100-story Sears Tower in downtown Chicago, so thick it obscured the view. That moment of awe will forever remain etched in my memory.
That day, I joined the entire family in the glorious victory parade.
