< 체계적이고 과학적으로 가르치는 지도자 >
요즘 많은 매체를 통해 젊은 야구 지도자들이 유소년 선수들을 대상으로 훈련을 시키는 것을 종종 보게 된다. 그동안 내가 경험하고 가르쳐온 타격에 관한 이론이 얼마나 구시대적인 방식인지 느낄 때가 많다. 거의 모든 스포츠가 마찬가지겠지만 시대의 흐름에 따라 훈련 및 지도방법이 참 많이 바뀌었다는 것을 젊은 지도자들을 보며 새삼스럽게 다시 깨닫게 된다.
체계적이고 과학적으로 각각 선수들의 신체와 운동능력 등을 고려하여 그들에게 맞는 훈련법과 동작을 지도하는 모습이 꽤 인상적이다.
올 1월부터 문경에 있는 '글로벌선진학교' 감독을 맡고 있는 권혁돈 감독은 어린 선수들을 강압적으로 지도하지 않고 서로 피드백을 주고받으며 선수들과 소통하며 타격훈련 및 수비훈련을 하는 모습을 본다. 권혁돈 감독은 집대성 같은 자료와 노트를 갖고 선수들의 동작을 관찰하고 선수들이 이해할 수 있는 언어로 설명하고 부족한 부분은 직접 시범을 보이면서 코칭하는 지도자다.
선수들이 잘 이해하지 못할 때 감독이 직접 몸으로 보이면서 설명을 하니 선수들의 집중력이 높아지는 것을 직접 눈으로 확인할 수 있었다. 한참 야구 후배인 권혁돈 감독의 타격 이론 및 수비이론 그리고 야구에 대한 철학까지 어린선수들에게 가르치는 정말 훌륭한 지도자다. 현장을 떠나 아직도 예전 방식의 코칭에 젖어있는 나에게 새로운 타격이론 및 수비이론 거기다가 선수들을 대하는 태도까지 후배에게 배울 수 있어 너무 좋다.
이제 젊은 학생들에게 주먹구구식의 획일적 지도방식은 통하지 않는다. 일방향적인 코칭으로 선수들을 강압적으로 이끌어가는 시대는 지났다. 많은 지도자가 연구자로서의 코치로 거듭나야 한다.
우리 시대 지도자들에게 필요한 것은 이론적으로 야구에 대한 해박한 지식이 있어야 함은 당연하다. 선수들이 가진 동작의 메커니즘을 과학적으로 설명하고 선수들의 신체 특성에 따른 올바른 동작을 연구하고 제시해 줄 수 있는 능력을 갖추어야 한다. 또한 지도자로서 용모, 성품, 말투 등의 간접적인 코칭 부분도 세련화 되어야 한다. 물론 선수를 사랑하고 가르침 자체에 행복을 느끼는 인성을 갖추는 것도 매우 중요한 지도자의 자질이라고 생각한다. 여기에 위에서 언급한 연구자로서의 태도를 갖추게 되었을 때 우리 시대가 원하는 이상적인 지도자가 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
학생부터 프로야구 선수까지 야구를 배우면서 성장에 도움이 되었던 야구 코칭도 물론 있었지만 돌이켜보면 정작 쓸데없이 시간을 낭비한 부분이 더 많음을 느낀다. 프로시절 타격에 대해서 좋은 성적을 거두었지만 잘못된 훈련을 반복하며 허비했던 시간이 너무 많았다는 것이 아쉽게 생각된다.
타격과 관련한 이론에는 단 한 개의 정답도 없다. 어떤 것이 ‘옳다’ 또는 ‘그르다’로 구분할 수가 없다. 야구 상황이나 타자의 신체 특성, 개성 등을 고려해서 본인에게 맞는 타격 스타일이 만들어지는 것이다. 10번 중 3번 안타를 쳐도 그 힘들다는 3할 타자가 되는 야구에서 움직이는 공을 받아쳐 내는 예술인 타격은 가장 어려운 분야임은 틀림없다. 타자의 장점을 극대화하고 공을 정확하게 맞추는 능력을 갖출 수 있는 타격 자세가 아마 무수히 많은 정답이 될 것이다.
야구를 잘하는 것, 잘 아는 것, 잘 가르치는 것은 분명 다른 영역이다. 비록 프로에서 화려한 선수 생활을 하지 않았지만, 야구와 어린 선수를 진정으로 사랑하고, 끊임없이 연구하며 자신의 코칭을 과학적이고 체계화시켜 선수들을 가르치고 있는 권혁돈 감독. 그는 분명 훌륭한 지도자로 성장할 것이다.

These days, I often see young baseball leaders training young players through many media. I often feel how outdated the theory of hitting I have experienced and taught is. Almost all sports are the same, but when I see young leaders, I realize again that training and teaching methods have changed a lot with the passage of the times.
It is quite impressive to systematically and scientifically guide the training methods and movements suitable for each player, taking into account their physical and motor skills.
Kwon Hyuk-don, the head coach of the "Global Advanced School" in Mungyeong since January, does not forcefully guide young players but gives feedback to each other, communicates with players, and conducts batting and defense training. Kwon is a leader who observes players' movements with materials and notes such as compilation, explains in a language that players can understand, and coaches them by demonstrating the shortcomings.
When the players did not understand well, the coach showed his body and explained it, so I could see with my own eyes that the players' concentration increased. He is a great leader who teaches young players the batting theory, defense theory, and baseball philosophy of coach Kwon Hyuk-don, who is a long-time junior in baseball. It is so nice to learn from my juniors the new batting theory, defense theory, and the attitude toward the players from me, who are still immersed in the old way of coaching, away from the field.
Now, the uniform teaching method of fist-punching does not work for young students. Gone are the days when one-way coaching leads players forcefully. Many leaders have to be reborn as coaches as researchers.
It is natural that what leaders of our time need is theoretically a deep knowledge of baseball. They must have the ability to scientifically explain the mechanism of movement of the players and study and present the correct movement according to the players' physical characteristics. In addition, as a leader, indirect coaching such as appearance, character, and speech should be refined. Of course, I think it is a very important quality of a leader to have the personality of loving the players and feeling happy in the teaching itself. In addition, I think we can become the ideal leader that our time wants when equipped with the attitude as a researcher mentioned above.
From students to professional baseball players, there was of course baseball coaching that helped them grow while learning baseball, but looking back, I feel that I wasted more time unnecessarily. I regret that I had a good performance in hitting as a professional, but I wasted too much time repeating wrong training.
There is not a single right answer in the batting theory. There is no distinction between right and wrong. The batting style that suits you is created by considering the baseball situation, the physical characteristics, and personality of the batter. In baseball, where a player hits three times out of 10 times but becomes a batter with a hard time, hitting a moving ball must be the most difficult area. The batting posture that maximizes a batter's strengths and has the ability to hit the ball accurately will probably be the myriad of correct answers.
Playing baseball well, knowing well, and teaching well are definitely other areas. Manager Kwon Hyuk-don, who truly loves baseball and young players, constantly studies them, and teaches them by scientifically and methodically organizing his coaching, even though he did not have a stellar career in the profession. He will surely grow into a great leader.
