< 순간의 선택을 위해 미리 준비해야 한다 >
나의 삶은 젊은 시절부터 지금까지 매순간 선택의 연속으로 살아왔다. 평생 야구라는 한 울타리에서 살아온 나의 삶은 0.1초 안에서 결정하고 판단했어야 했다. 0.1초 사이에 아웃이 되고 세이프가 되는 것이 야구다. 그 간발의 차이에 승리할 수 있고 패할 수 있는 것이 야구다. 젊은 시절에 숫한 선택의 기로에 서서 쳐야 할 것인지 아니면 기다려야 할 것인지 판단해야 한다.
젊은 선수시절에 이런 숫한 선택으로 인해 지도자가 되어서도 경기가 진행 되는 순간에 어떤 작전을 낼 것인지에 대해 이미 판단해 작전코치에게 전달한다. 우리들의 인생도 마찬가지다. 우리가 이 세상을 살아갈 때 평생 선택의 기로에 서 있다. 잘못된 선택을 해 실패 할 때도 있고 남들이 해서는 안 된다는 선택을 해 생각지도 않는 대박을 칠 때도 있다.
지도자가 되어 짧은 시간 안에 작전을 선택해 작전코치에게 전달한다는 것은 말처럼 쉽지가 않다. 그래도 감사한 것은 수십년 동안 나도 모르게 자연스럽게 몸에 배어 작전하는 나의 모습을 볼 때가 있다. 물론 이렇게 되기까지 많은 노력과 투자를 했고 또 전날부터 상대 팀에 대한 집대성 같은 자료들을 나의 머리속에 숙지해야 한다.
집대성 같은 자료들을 나의 머리에 다 입력해 어떤 작전을 펼칠 것인지에 대해 수십게의 작전들을 컴퓨터처럼 입력해 놓고 게임 상황에 맞게 작전에 임한다. 경기의 흐름을 읽을 수 있는 매의 눈을 가져야 하고 또 엄청난 양의 자료들을 최첨단 컴퓨터에 다 들어가 있어야 한다.
지도자 하면서 가장 큰 도움이 되었던 것이 포수였고 타자였다. 포수 하면서 상대팀 선수들과 팀의 스타일들을 다 파악하고 있어야 한다. 그 팀의 감독은 어떤 스타일의 유형인지 그리고 상대 타자들은 어떤 스타일인지? 이미 경기 전에 다 파악해서 나의 머리에 입력해 두어야 한다. 그리고 그날 경기 전체를 어떻게 이끌어 가고 어떻게 운영할 것인지에 대해서도 다 입력해 두어야 한다.
그리고 훌륭하고 좋은 타자가 되기 위해서도 집대성 같은 자료들을 본인만이 갖고 있어야 한다. 타자는 오로지 개인의 능력을 위해 냉철하고 투철하게 혼자서 싸워야 한다. 이때는 어느 누구도 도움을 줄 수 없다.
거기다가 마운드에서 포수 홈플레이트까지 짧은 18.44의 거리에서 150킬로 넘는 볼을 판단해서 타격하는 것처럼 힘들고 어려운 일은 없다. 타격은 세상에서 가장 힘들고 어려운 숙제다. 점과 점을 맞추어야 하는 고도의 기술이 필요하다. 거기다가 투수 마운드에서 포수 홈플레이트까지 18.44미터의 그 짧은 거리에서 뿜어져 나오는 속도는 우리가 상상할 수 없을 정도로 빠르게 날라온다. 그리고 0.4초 만에 포수 미트로 볼이 들어오기 때문에 눈 깜빡할 시간 조차도 없다. 그 짧은 0.4초 안에 판단해서 타격을 해야 한다.
