< 척박한 라오스 땅에 눈물로 씨를 뿌렸다 >
라오스 루앙프라방 수파누봉국립대학 'Red Rider' 팀의 손사랑 코치가 이번 '산티팝중학교' 야구단 창단할 때 손사랑 코치가 그동안 만든 짧은 영상들을 참석한 사람들에게 보여 주었다. 야구가 어떤 것이고 또 선수들이 어떻게 훈련하는지에 대한 그동안 'Red Rider' 선수들의 훈련 장면과 멋진 활동에 대한 짧은 영상을 보았는데 너무 멋지고 값진 것들이다.
이미 라오스 루앙프라방은 야구로 인해 이들 청소년들에게 발빠르게 소문이 났고, 발전하고 있고 또 이들에게 야구를 통해 꿈을 갖게 되는 것을 보았다. 여기에는 김한근 감독과 손사랑 코치 그리고 먼저 야구를 시작한 Red Rider 팀 선수들이 있기 때문이다.
아무것도 없는 '무’에서 시작하는 것이지만 기초를 차근차근 배워 나가는 것이 이들 청소년들에게 훨씬 더 좋을 수 있다. 김한근 감독과 손사랑 코치가 생소한 야구를 가르칠 때마다 학생들의 초롱초롱하고 호기심 어린 눈빛들을 보니 이 중에 어떤 보석과도 같은 학생들이 나올지 기대가 된다며 기뻐하고 있다.
“If you can dream it, you can do it. (꿈꿀 수 있다면, 그 꿈을 이룰 수도 있다)”
지난 12년 동안 척박한 라오스 땅에 눈물로 씨를 뿌렸고 또 어려울 때 함께 했던 수많은 사람들하고도 우여곡절 속에서도 포기하지 않고 (Never ever give up) 정신으로 여기까지 달려왔다.
늘 강조하는 이야기지만 루앙프라방에서 야구를 젊은 학생들에게 가르친다는 것은 절대 순탄한 길이 아님을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 그러나 자신하건데 그렇다고 해서 힘든 일만 있는 것은 아니다. 오히려 포기하고 싶고 힘들어서 도망가고 싶을 때 그럴 때마다 먼저 이 길을 걸었던 지난 시간들을 되돌아 보며 “Never ever give up“ 정신으로 끝까지 달려갈 것이다.

< Sowing Seeds with Tears in the Barren Soil of Laos >
Coach Son Sarang of the “Red Rider” team at Suphanouvong National University in Luang Prabang, Laos, showed attendees a short video compilation she had created during the founding ceremony of the “Santi Pop Middle School” baseball team. The video featured training scenes and impressive activities of the “Red Rider” players, demonstrating what baseball is all about and how the players train—truly wonderful and valuable moments.
Word has already spread quickly among these young people in Luang Prabang, Laos, thanks to baseball, and we have seen them developing and finding dreams through the sport. This is all thanks to Manager Kim Han-geun, Coach Son Sarang, and the players of the Red Rider team who started playing baseball first.
Although they are starting from “nothing,” learning the basics step by step may be much better for these young people. Coach Kim Han-geun and Coach Son Sa-rang are delighted, saying that whenever they teach the unfamiliar sport of baseball, seeing the students’ bright, curious eyes makes them look forward to discovering which of these students will turn out to be true gems.

Over the past 12 years, we have sown seeds with tears in the barren soil of Laos, and together with the countless people who stood by us during difficult times, we have persevered through all the ups and downs with a “Never ever give up” spirit to get this far.
I know all too well—as I always emphasize—that teaching baseball to young students in Luang Prabang is by no means a smooth path. However, I can assure you that it’s not all hardship. On the contrary, whenever I feel like giving up or want to run away because it’s too hard, I will look back on the path I’ve walked so far and keep running to the end with the “Never ever give up” spirit.
