< '칸' 선수와 '싸와' 선수를 정식 지도자로 임명하다 >
라오스 야구가 세계 무대로 뻗어 나가며 진정한 부흥을 맞이하기 위해 가장 시급한 과제는 단연 '자국민 지도자' 양성이다. 한국인들은 라오스 야구에 주춧돌을 놓아 주는 조력자일 뿐, 언제까지나 주도자가 될 수는 없다. 결국 라오스 야구는 라오스인들 스스로 이끌어 가야만 한국 야구처럼 눈부신 발전을 이룰 수 있다.
이러한 자립의 첫걸음으로, 헐크파운데이션은 수파누봉 국립대학 'Red Rider' 팀의 주장이었던 '칸' 선수와 '싸와' 선수를 정식 지도자로 임명했다. 오는 6월부터 이들은 루앙프라방의 수파누봉 국립대학과 싼티팝 중·고등학교의 코치로서 후배들을 지도하게 된다. 수도 비엔티안에 이어 루앙프라방에서도 자국민 유급 코치가 탄생하는 역사적인 순간이다.
나는 지난 12년 동안 단순히 야구 기술만을 가르치지 않았다. 나의 진정한 목표는 야구가 라오스 청년들의 삶에 실질적인 변화를 일으키는 ‘지속 가능한 생태계’를 구축하는 것이었다. 가난으로 배움의 기회가 적은 라오스 아이들에게 야구라는 스포츠를 통해 협동심과 절제, 그리고 미래에 대한 희망을 심어 주는 '야구를 통한 교육'에 모든 것을 걸었다. "야구는 내가 받은 사랑을 세상에 돌려주는 통로"라는 나의 철학이 라오스 전역에 굳건히 뿌리내리기를 간절히 바랐다.
"If you can dream it, you can do it (꿈꿀 수 있다면, 그 꿈을 이룰 수도 있다)."
열악한 환경 속에서는 도저히 야구를 할 수 없고 좋은 지도자도 나올 수 없다고 지레 포기했다면, 오늘과 같은 날은 오지 않았을 것이다. 지금껏 꿈을 버리지 않았기에 라오스 청년들이 스스로 일어서는 기적을 마주하고 있다. 꿈을 포기하지 않는다면 그 꿈은 반드시 이루어진다는 것을 알기에, 나는 오늘도 동남아시아 야구의 미래를 향해 멈추지 않고 달려간다.

As Laotian baseball expands onto the world stage and strives for a true renaissance, the most urgent task is undoubtedly the development of “home-grown coaches.” Koreans are merely facilitators laying the foundation for Laotian baseball; they cannot remain the driving force forever. Ultimately, Laotian baseball must be led by the Laotians themselves to achieve the kind of remarkable progress seen in Korean baseball.
As the first step toward this self-reliance, the Hulk Foundation has appointed ‘Khan’ and ‘Sawa’—former captains of the ‘Red Rider’ team at Suphanouvong National University—as official coaches. Starting this June, they will coach younger players at Suphanouvong National University in Luang Prabang and at Santipop Middle and High School. This marks a historic moment, as Laos now has its first paid native coaches in Luang Prabang, following the capital, Vientiane.
Over the past 12 years, I have not merely taught baseball skills. My true goal was to build a “sustainable ecosystem” where baseball brings about tangible changes in the lives of Laotian youth. I staked everything on “education through baseball”—using the sport to instill teamwork, self-discipline, and hope for the future in Laotian children who have limited educational opportunities due to poverty. I earnestly hoped that my philosophy—“Baseball is a channel through which I give back to the world the love I have received”—would take firm root throughout Laos.
“If you can dream it, you can do it.”
If I had given up prematurely, assuming that baseball was impossible in such harsh conditions and that no good coaches could emerge, a day like today would never have come. Because I never gave up on my dream, I am now witnessing the miracle of Laotian youth standing on their own two feet. Knowing that if you don’t give up on a dream, it will surely come true, I continue to run tirelessly toward the future of baseball in Southeast Asia.
