<헐크파운데이션, 진정한 글로벌 시대가 열렸다>

헐크파운데이션 스태프 중에는 조성제 팀장이 있다. 그는 23년 4개월간 직업군인으로 헌신하고 명예 전역한, 참으로 멋진 남자다. 오랜 군 생활 덕분에 그의 행정력과 추진력은 우리 스태프들 사이에서도 단연 최고로 꼽힌다. 특히 봉사 정신이 깊어 재단이 국내외로 활동을 나갈 때면 가장 먼저 팔을 걷어붙이고 달려오는 든든한 존재다.

조 팀장과 함께 라오스, 캄보디아, 베트남, 인도네시아를 누빈 지도 벌써 5년이 되었다. 그는 심판아카데미와 티볼 지도자 자격증을 모두 갖춘 실력파 강사다. 매년 'KBO 찾아가는 티볼교실'을 도맡아 전국을 누볐던 훌륭한 인재였기에, 아마 그를 가장 그리워할 사람은 한국티볼연맹의 박철호 전무일 것이다.

지금도 잊히지 않는 장면이 있다. 2023년 8월, 캄보디아 야구 지원을 위해 방문했을 때다. 한낮 기온이 36도를 웃도는 살인적인 무더위 속에서도 그는 하루 6시간 넘게 큰소리로 선수들을 가르쳤다. "이 더위에 그 열정이 어디서 나오느냐"는 나의 물음에 그는 웃으며 답했다. "덥고 지친다고 생각하면 버티지 못합니다. 그저 즐겁게 하려고 애쓸 뿐입니다." 스스로를 다스리지 않으면 견딜 수 없는 불볕더위 속에서, 그는 이틀 만에 목이 잠기면서도 지칠 줄 몰랐다.

심판복을 입고 36도 더위에 서 있는 것은 마치 사우나 찜통 속에 있는 것과 같다. 하지만 그는 강인한 군인 정신으로 자외선 차단 마스크조차 쓰지 않는다. 얼굴이 검게 타버려도 선수들과 소통하는 것이 심판의 예의이자 자세라고 믿기 때문이다. 썬크림을 아무리 발라도 10분이면 땀에 씻겨 내려가는 극한의 상황 속에서도 그의 헌신은 멈추지 않았다. 이런 스태프들의 사랑이 없었다면 헐크파운데이션이 여기까지 올 수 있었을까.

이제 헐크파운데이션은 명실상부한 글로벌 재단으로 거듭나고 있다. 이번 루앙프라방 방문을 마치고 돌아오는 길, 비엔티안 역에는 조성제 팀장과 그의 예비 신부가 마중을 나와 주었다. 공항으로 이동하는 내내 참으로 편안하고 행복했다. 예비 신부는 한국말도 유창하고, 한국인처럼 예쁜 외모를 가진 몽족 출신의 여성이다.

놀라운 것은 이들의 인연이다. 예비 신부의 아버지 역시 라오스의 군인이고, 형부도 군의관이라고 한다. 직업군인 출신 사위와 장인어른이라니, 이 얼마나 하늘이 정해준 운명 같은 만남인가. 무엇보다 사랑의 힘으로 조 팀장이 신앙을 갖게끔 이끌어준 예비 신부의 마음씨가 내 눈에는 더욱 아름다워 보였다.

앞으로 인도차이나반도에 야구를 전파하기 위해서는 라오스 현지에 사람이 꼭 필요하다. 이제 조 팀장이 라오스에 머물며 가정을 꾸리게 되었으니, 야구장을 짓고 보급하는 일에 큰 힘이 될 것이다. 지난 12년 동안 이 땅에 야구를 전파하며 이런 경사스러운 일을 직접 목격할 수 있어 야구인의 한 사람으로서 말할 수 없이 행복하고 보람차다. 두 사람을 보고 있자니 지난 세월이 주마등처럼 스쳐 지나간다.

짧은 만남이었지만 내게 준 행복은 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없을 만큼 컸다. 지난 시간들에 감사하고 또 감사할 따름이다.

조성제 팀장, 진심으로 축하해. 라오스에서 예비 신부와 함께 행복하게 잘 살길 기도하겠네!

foundation, a truly global era has begun>

One of the Hulk Foundation staff members is Cho Seong-je. Cho is a wonderful man who devoted himself to the military service for 23 years and four months and has been discharged from the military with honor. Thanks to his long military career, Cho's administrative power and drive are considered by far the best among our staff. In particular, he has a deep spirit of service and is a reliable person who rolls up his sleeves first when the foundation goes abroad.

It has already been five years since he visited Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Indonesia with Team Leader Cho. He is a skilled instructor with both a referee academy and a T-ball leader certificate. Park Cheol-ho, executive director of the Korea T-ball Federation, will probably miss him the most because he was a great talent who took charge of the 'KBO Visiting T-ball Class' every year.

There is a scene that I still can't forget. It was August 2023 when he visited Cambodia to support baseball. Even in the midst of the deadly heat, with midday temperatures hovering above 36 degrees Celsius, he taught players loudly for more than six hours a day. When asked, "Where does the passion come from in this heat?" he replied with a smile. "When I think of it as hot and exhausting, I can't stand it. I'm just trying to entertain myself." In the scorching heat, which he couldn't bear without controlling himself, he was choked up and exhausted in two days.

Standing in the heat of 36 degrees Celsius in a judge's uniform is like being in a sauna. However, he does not even wear a sunscreen mask with strong military spirit. He believes that it is a judge's manners and attitude to communicate with players even if his face burns black. Despite the extreme conditions in which he sweats down in 10 minutes no matter how much sunscreen he puts on, his dedication did not stop. Could the Hulk Foundation have come this far without the love from the staff.

Now, the Hulk Foundation is being reborn as a global foundation in name and reality. On the way back from this visit to Luang Prabang, team leader Cho Sung-je and his bride-to-be greeted me at Vientiane Station. I was very comfortable and happy throughout the journey to the airport. The bride-to-be is a woman from Mongjok who is fluent in Korean and has a pretty appearance like a Korean.

What is surprising is their relationship. The bride-to-be's father is also a soldier in Laos, and her brother-in-law is also a military doctor. What a fate-like encounter between a son-in-law and a father-in-law who used to be a professional soldier. Above all, the bride-to-be's heart, which led Team Leader Cho to have faith with the power of love, seemed more beautiful to me.

In order to spread baseball to the Indochina Peninsula in the future, people are essential in Laos. Now that Team Leader Cho is staying in Laos and starting a family, it will be a great help to build and distribute baseball stadiums. As a baseball player, I am indescribably happy and rewarding to be able to witness such a happy event in person while spreading baseball on the land for the past 12 years. Looking at the two, the past years pass like a beacon.

It was a short meeting, but the happiness that gave me was so great that it could not be exchanged for anything. I am grateful and grateful for the past times.
