< 한사람의 희생이 넓은 세상을 보게 했다 >
라오스에서 들어온지 몇일 되지 않았다. 당분간 몸을 추수리고 사랑하는 가족들과 몇일 푹 쉬려고 했는데 반가운 전화가 걸려왔다. '모가중학교' 김완수 감독인 것이다. 너무 반가워 전화 받았더니 자랑스러운 후배가 '감독님 시간이 되시면 꼭 저희 학교로 오셔서 재능기부 해주세요'
솔직히 좀더 쉬고 싶었지만 모가중학교는 나에게 잊을 수 없는 분이 있었다. 그분은 고(故) 유승철 대표다. 2014년 'SK와이번스'에서 나와 2015년 초에 고 유승철 대표를 알게 되었다.
누가 이야기 했던가? 인생은 바람이라고... 삶이 끝나면 존재도 흔적도 없이 사라지는 것이 우리들의 인생이다. 하지만, 어떤 이의 삶은 인생이 끝난 뒤 더 진한 존재감을 나타내기도 한다. 라오스 야구청소년들로부터 '천사'라고 불렸던 고(故) 유승철 대표가 바로 그런 분이다.
고 유승철 대표는 “정말 야구와 라오스 아이들밖에 몰랐던 너무나 멋진 분이다.” 유 대표는 세상 사람이 다 아는 야구인도, 저명인사도 아니다. 그저 평범한 '피칭 머신' 사업가였다. 하지만, 그는 나에게 있어 너무나 소중하고 좋은 동반자였다.
그는 젊은 시절 야구광이었다. 얼마나 야구가 좋았으면 하던 일도 뒤로 미루고 심판 자격증을 따기 위해 한달 가량 자리를 비울 정도였다. 유승철 대표의 인연은 2015년 초로 거슬러 올라간다. 당시 나는 전국을 돌며 재능기부을 하고 있었다. 그는 수소문 끝에 재능기부하는 곳까지 찾아왔다. 이렇게 인연이 되어 유대표와 함께 '라오스 야구 보급'에 힘쓰게 되었다. 이렇게 인연이 되어 이때부터 유 대표와 함께 야구를 처음 시작하는 라오스와 전국에 어려운 야구 팀이 있으면 피칭머신을 기증하게 되었다.
2015년엔 라오스 야구팀에 피칭 머신 4대나 선물했고, 각종 야구용품을 아낌없이 지원했다. 시간이 나면 직접 라오스로 날아가 스스로 자청해 '야구 심판'을 맡기도 했다. 넉넉한 형편은 아니었지만, 언제나 최선을 다해 나누는 삶을 살았던 유 대표였다.
많은 시간이 흘렀지만 지금도 잊을 수가 없었던 것은 유 대표가 나에게 연락해 만나자마자 다짜고짜 "도와달라"고 한다. 폐부 위기에 처한 ‘이천 모가중학교 야구부'를 구해달라는게 그의 부탁이었다.
'모가중학교' 재능기부 가기 전에 무슨 일이 있었는지 이번에도 다시 한번 인터넷 검색해 보았다. '모가중 야구부' 이야기가 화제가 되면서 모가중 야구부를 살리려는 분이 많았다. 그 대표적인 사람이 유 대표였던 것이다. 유 대표 얘길 듣고, 바로 도와주기로 약속했던 기억이 있다.
이때부터 이천에 있는 '모가중학교'는 언제나 나의 마음 한구석을 차지하고 있었다. 이번에 김완수 감독이 전화해 '꼭 모가중학교 찾아 주셔서 재능기부 해 달라'고 할 때 만사를 제쳐두고 달려가기로 했다.
지금도 유승철 대표가 했던 이야기가 나의 귓전을 울린다. '라오스 학생선수들과 함께 지내며 맺은 인연과 가슴 속 깊은 곳에 숨겨져 있던 '야구 열정'을 발견할 수 있어 감사하다'는 것이다.
라오스에 야구를 전파한지 어느덧 올해가 12년째가 된다. 유승철 대표로 인해 어느새 라오스에 야구 팀이 3팀이나 된다. 라오스 수도인 비엔티안에 '라오J브라더스' 팀이 있고 이번에 창단한 루앙프라방 '싼티팝 중학교' 그리고 '수파누봉국립대학교' 'Red Rider' 팀이 있다.
우리는 유승철 대표한테 많은 사랑과 큰 빚을 졌다. “유 대표는 ‘라오J브라더스’ 선수들을 진심으로 아끼고 사랑했다. 그는 늘 애정을 갖고 선수들을 챙겼다. 그곳 아이들에게 유 대표는 아버지 같은 존재였다. 나와 함께 라오스에 처음 야구를 보급할 때, 그 뜨거운 열기 속에서도 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 피칭머신을 수리하던 유 대표의 모습이 아직도 눈에 선하다.
라오스 뿐만이 아니다. 국내 많은 야구팀이 유 대표의 피칭머신으로 야구의 꿈을 이어가고 있다. 국내 야구계는 이미 유승철 대표에게 평생 갚지 못할 빚을 졌다. 정말 감사합니다. 잊지 않겠습니다.
< One person's sacrifice made me see the wide world>
It hasn't been a few days since I came in from Laos. I was going to harvest my body for the time being and get a good rest with my loved ones, but I got a good call. It was Kim Wan-soo, the director of Moga Middle School. It was so nice to meet you. I answered the phone and my proud junior said, "Director, if you have time, please come to my school and donate your talent."
Honestly, I wanted to rest more, but Moga Middle School had an unforgettable person for me. That is the late CEO Yoo Seung-chul. I got to know the late CEO Yoo Seung-chul in early 2015 after coming out of the SK Wyverns in 2014.
Who said that? Life is a wind... It is our life that disappears without a trace when our lives are over. However, some people's lives also show a deeper presence after their lives are over. That's who the late CEO Yoo Seung-chul, who was called an "angel" by Laos baseball youth.
The late CEO Yoo Seung-chul said, "He is such a wonderful person that only baseball and Laos children knew." Yoo is neither a baseball player nor a famous person. He was just an ordinary 'pitching machine' entrepreneur. However, he was such a precious and good companion to me.
When he was young, he was a baseball fanatic. He put off what he wanted to do and left the office for about a month to get a referee license. Yoo Seung-chul's relationship dates back to early 2015. At that time, I was doing talent donations across the country. After searching, he came all the way to a place where he donated his talent. This relationship led him to work hard to spread 'Laos baseball' with Yoo. This relationship led him to donate his pitching machine to Laos, where he started playing baseball for the first time with Yoo, and to a difficult team nationwide.
In 2015, he presented four pitching machines to the Laos baseball team and generously provided various baseball supplies. When he had time, he flew to Laos and volunteered to be a "baseball referee." He was not generous, but he always lived a life of sharing his life to the best of his ability.
What I couldn't forget even now, even after a long time, was that CEO Yoo contacted me and asked me to "help" as soon as we met. It was his request to save the "Icheon Moga Middle School Baseball Team" which is on the verge of collapse.
I searched the Internet again this time to see what happened before I went to Moga Middle School's talent donation. As the story of the "Mo-weighted baseball team" became a hot topic, many people tried to save the Mo-weighted baseball team. The representative person was CEO Yoo. I remember hearing about CEO Yoo and promising to help him right away.
Since then, the "Moga Middle School" in Icheon has always occupied the back of my mind. This time, when director Kim Wan-soo called me and asked me to donate my talents to Moga Middle School, I decided to leave everything aside.
The story that Yoo Seung-chul, the current CEO, told, touches my ears. "I am grateful to be able to discover the relationship I have made with the students of Laos and the 'passion of baseball' that was hidden deep in my heart."
This year marks the 12th year since baseball was spread to Laos. Due to CEO Yoo Seung-chul, there are already three baseball teams in Laos. There is a "Rao J Brothers" team in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and there is a new Luang Prabang "Santi-Pop Middle School" and "Sufanubong National University" and "Red Rider" team.
We owe a lot of love and debt to Yoo Seung-cheol. "Yoo truly cared and loved the Lao J Brothers. He always took care of the players with affection. To the children there, Yoo was like a father. When he first introduced baseball to Laos with me, I still remember Yoo repairing the pitching machine while sweating in the midst of the scorching heat. Laos is not the only country. Many Korean baseball teams are continuing their dreams of baseball with Yoo's pitching machine. Not only Laos but also the Korean baseball community is already indebted to Yoo Seung-cheol that they will never be able to repay. Thank you very much. I will never forget it.
