< 세계적인 지휘자 함신익 >

오늘은 내가 존경하고 위대한 한 사람을 소개하려고 한다. 그는 나와 같은 년도인 2014년 함신익과 심포니 송이라는 오케스트라 이름을 걸고 시작했다. 나는 2014년도 SK와이번스 감독 끝으로 야구의 불모지인 인도차이나반도인 라오스로 내려가 야구를 전파했다.

함신익 지휘자는 서울 출생이고 자라 미국의 라이스 대학교와 이스트만 음악원에서 공부하였다.

거기에 비해 나는 한양대학교를 졸업하고 창단 멤버로 '삼성라이온즈' 팀에 입단했다. 삼성라이온즈 팀에서 16년간의 선수생활을 끝내고 미국으로 건너가 선진야구와 지도자의 수업을 받게 되었다. 처음 갔던 팀이 1998년 클리블랜드 인디언스 싱글A 팀인 '킹스톤'이었고 1999년도에는 시카고 화이트 삭스 트리플A 팀인 '샤롯 나이츠' 팀이다.

2000년도부터 시작해 2006년까지 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 지도자로 생활했다. 이런것을 보더라도 함신익 지휘자와 너무 많은 것이 닮은 꼴이다. 앞에서도 이야기 했지만 그의 경력을 나열한다면 다 적을 수도 없을 정도로 그의 경력이 화려하다. 특히 1995년에는 한국인 최초로 '예일대학교' 음악대학 지휘과 교수로 부임하면서 2018년까지 '예일대학교'에 재직했다.

그리고 무엇보다 함신익 지휘자는 나보다 한살 많은 1957년생이다. 나는 1958년생이라 우리는 서로 친구로 지금까지 좋은 관계로 함께 지내고 있다.

지난 8월 4일 함신익 지휘자가 나에게 글을 보내 왔다. 그의 글을 읽으며 많은 생각에 잠겼다. 나 또한 '헐크파운데이션' 재단을 운영하기 위해 지금까지 동분서주하며 달려왔다. 그러나 함신익 지휘자는 혼자가 아니라 60명 많게는 80명 넘는 단원들을 이끌어 가는 일이 여간 힘든 일이 아님을 직접 그의 옆에서 보았다.

우리는 화려하고 멋진 지휘자의 뒷모습만 볼 때가 얼마나 많은지 모른다. 물론 나 또한 이들과 매한가지였다. 함신익 지휘자와 함께 이야기하고 함께 생활하면서 그의 힘들고 어려운 고충을 많이 보게 되었다. 나또한 작다면 작은 '헐크파운데이션' 재단을 이끌어 가기 위해 전국을 뛰어 다니며 기부자들을 만났다.

기부자를 만날 때 때론 전혀 예상하지 못한 일들로 인해 몇날 몇일을 마음이 무거워 그만 두려고 했던 적이 얼마나 많았는지 모른다. 그런데 최고의 학벌과 경력 그리고 많은 사람들이 존경하는 지휘자임에도 함신익 지휘자는 나와 마찬가지로 공연을 하기 위해서는 자신도 세일즈맨이 되어 전국을 뛰어 다닌다는 이야기에 솔직히 쇼크 받았던 기억이 있다.

어느 누가 최고의 명성과 권위를 갖고 있는 지휘자가 공연할 때마다 기부자들에게 달려가 손을 내민다고 누가 상상이나 했겠는가? 6 - 80명 되는 단원들을 데리고 있으면 이들에게 월급을 주기 위해서는 자신이 열심히 뛰어 다니지 않으면 안 된다는 것이다. 그리고 공연 있을 때마다 본인이 직접 뛰어 다니면서 티켓을 판다고 한다.

이런 모습을 같이 생활하며 직접 옆에서 세일즈맨으로 활동하는 모습을 보았다. 그래서 한번은 내가 이런 질문을 했다. '부끄럽지 않으세요?' '창피하지 않으세요?' '모멸감이 오지 않으세요?' 왜 자기라고 그런 생각이 들지 않겠느냐?는 것이다. 그러나 그런 생각을 하게 되면 절대 단원들을 이끌어 갈 수가 없다는 것이다.

큰 조직에 속했거나 KBS 같은 오케스트라에 소속되어 있으면 지휘자가 직접 뛰어 다니며 기부자를 찾아 갈 필요가 없다. 그러나 함신익과 심포니 송이라는 오케스트라의 이름을 걸고 단원들을 지난 10년 동안 이끌어 가기 위해서는 온 정열을 다 바치지 않으면 안 된다. 그는 지난 10년 동안 모든 것을 바쳐 어느 누구도 해보지 못한 일들을 제대로 해보겠다는 의지와 각오로 여기까지 달려왔다.

함신익 지휘자는 2014년 창단할 때부터 오케스트라 운영을 위해 가진 것 하나도 없이 그의 열정과 미래를 위해 여기까지 달려왔다고 한다. 그의 절박함이 지금의 그를 만들었다. 나또한 마찬가지다. 야구를 전파해야 한다는 절박함이 없었다면 절대 열악하고 환경이 좋지 않은 라오스로 내려가지 않았을 것이다.

그는 늘 이야기 한다. 화려한 미국생활을 접고 한국에 나왔을 때는 오직 실력과 열정으로 새로운 오케스트라를 만들어 보겠다는 그의 용기에 감탄을 금할 수 없었다. 그렇게 시작했던 것이 어느덧 올해가 벌써 11년이 지나 새로운 대한민국의 오케스트라 문화의 한 축을 형성하며 민간후원으로 운영되는 예술단체로 성장하게 되었다.

지난번 나의 페이스북에도 글을 썼지만 “쉬운 일은 누구나 선택할 수 있다. 어려운 일은 도전하기가 쉽지 않다. 그러나 그 어려운 일이 세상에서 가장 의미있고 가치 있는 일이라고 한다면, 또 어렵지만 가치 있는 일을 누군가가 해 낸다면 그 일은 결코 다른 이들이 어려운 일이라 생각하지 않고 포기하지 않는 일이 될 것이다. 우리는 이러한 일들을 도전하고 개척해 나가야 한다.

앞에서도 글을 썼지만 쉬운 일은 누구나 다 할 수 있는 일이다. 그러나 어려운 일을 누군가가 해 내면 그때부터 그 일은 어려운 일이라고 불려지지 않는다. 그렇게 되려면 어려워 보이는 그 일에 누군가가 도전하고 길을 개척해야 한다.”

함신익 지휘자의 성공담으로 인해 이제 대한민국 음악계에서는 많은 젊은 후배들에게 벤치마킹이 되고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 솔직히 말은 쉽지만 이 일이 얼마나 힘들고 어려운 일이라는 것을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 지난 11년 동안 인도차이나반도로 내려가 야구를 보급할 때만 해도 솔직히 한 해도 지탱하기도 어려운 현실적 도전을 넘어 여러 면에서 지속적으로 고루 발전하는 것은 여러번 이야기 하지만 여기까지 달려올 수 있었던 것은 놀라운 기적이라고 말할 수 밖에 없다. 

이런 기적을 만들어 가려면 수많은 사람의 희생과 헌신이 필요하다. 경제적후원이 필요한 것은 두말할 나위 없고 이들과 함께 더운 날씨에 운동하기 위해서는 수많은 후배들의 도움이 없이는 할 수 없는 일이다. 물론 첫해와 몇년까지는 멋모르고 혼자 동분서주 하며 뛰어 다녔지만 점점 스케일이 커지고 규모있게 하기 위해서는 언제까지 혼자 몸으로만 할 수 없는 단계에 이르게 되었다.

다행히 이때부터 헐크파운데이션 스텝진들이 한두명씩 헌신하겠다는 사람들이 모이기 시작했다. 스텝진들을 보며 동남아에 야구를 전파하는 일도 충분히 가능할 수 있다는 것을 보게 되었다. 지금도 잊을 수가 없었던 것은 대구은행 DGB 김태오 회장님의 통큰 기부금이 마중물이 되어 '헐크라운데이션'과 함께 라오스 사상 처음으로 멋진 야구장을 짓게 되었다.

우리가 그토록 원했던 야구장을 지난 2020년도에 라오스 최초로 확보되었고 이제는 모든선수들이 불안해 하지 않고 안정적인 연습을 하게 되었다. 오늘에 이르기까지 크고 작은 후원자들을 나열한다면 감동의 눈물로 온 땅을 채울 수 있을 만큼 많은 분들이 있다.

함신익 지휘자를 볼 때마다 깨닫는 것은 끊임 없이 도전하고 새롭게 무언가를 창조하려고 한다. 그것이 바로 아무도 생각하지 않았던 세계 최초인 대형 화물용 '윙 - 바디' 트럭을 개조하여 야외음악회 콘서트 무대로 만들어 대한민국 구석구석을 찾아 문화를 전파했다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 지난 10년 전 함신익 지휘자가 트럭을 개조해 오케스트라 단원들을 태우고 대한민국 전국을 돌며 연주했던 모습은 아직도 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않고 있다. 물론 나도 트럭 위에 올라가 단원들 앞에서 지휘했던 모습은 나의 인생에서 영원히 잊을 수 없을 것 같다. 보잘것 없는 나의 손놀림 하나에 모든 단원들이 일제히 하나로 움직이는 모습을 볼 때는 황홀하다 못해 숨이 멎는것 같았다.

그렇게 트럭을 개조하고 디자인부터 운영 그리고 관리를 지난 10년간 하다보니 이제 노후가 되어 새로운 1세대를 보내고 새롭게 2세대를 위해 ‘더 윙’의 출범이 되었다는 소식을 듣고 얼마나 기뻤는지 모른다. 함신익과 함께 하는 심포니 송은 지금까지 사회공헌이라는 중요한 창단목표를 수행하기 위해 달려왔다.

앞에서도 이야기 했지만 세계최초로 움직이는 오케스트라는 트럭무대위에 50여명의 연주자들이 최상의 음향시설을 갖추고 전국을 맘껏 돌아다니며 신나는 연주를 해 오고 있다. 1세대 트럭이 노후되어 각종 부품에 문제가 생길 무렵인 2023년 가을, 지난 10년간의 경험의 시행착오와 다양한 연주를 통해 획득한 전문적 노하우를 집대성하여 설계하고 제작하는 새로운 트럭무대, 2세대 ‘더 윙’이 탄생하게 되었다.

함신익 지휘자는 대한민국 국민들에게 자신의 재능과 사랑을 온 국민들에게 나누는 방법 중 하나가 문화의 공유다. 우리는 그의 가치가 높음을 인정해 주어야 한다. 그는 늘 이야기 한다. 고귀한 기부자들의 ‘참된 선행은 이름을 남기지 않는다’에 의존해 지금까지 그들의 고마움을 잊지 않고 자신의 자리에서 끝까지 최선을 다하는 것이 그들에게 보답하는 일이란다.

함신익과 함께 하는 심포니송은 창단 이후 지금까지 10년이 넘도록 후원하는 분들은 조용히 자기 목소리를 내지 않는 분들이 대부분이라 한다. 아무리 경기가 어려워 운영하는 회사가 재정난을 겪을 때도 묵묵히 후원을 멈추지 않고 함신익과 함께 하는 심포니송이 훌륭한 콘서트 홀에서 그리고 전국으로 다니며 음악활동을 멈추지 않게 도와주시는 그들에게 할 수 있는 최고의 보답은 최상의 음악으로 더 많은 분들에게 좋은 음악을 전달하고 젊은 연주자들이 자신의 능력을 최대로 발휘하여 청중들에게 들려주는 것이란다.

함신익 지휘자는 대한민국이 오케스트라 역사에 작지만 진실된 참된 예술을 전달하는 한 예술가의 가치가 오래도록 여운이 남도록 하는 것이 아름다운 세상을 만드는 것이고 그것이 바로 함신익 지휘자가 추구하는 작은 그러나 진실된 소망이라고 한다.

Today, I would like to introduce a great person whom I respect. He started with the orchestra name Ham Shin-ik and Symphony Song in 2014, the same year as me. After coaching the SK Wyverns in 2014, I went to Laos, the barren Indochina Peninsula, to spread baseball.

Born and raised in Seoul, Ham studied at Rice University and Eastman Conservatory in the United States.

By comparison, I graduated from Hanyang University and joined the Samsung Lions team as a founding member. After 16 years of playing for the Samsung Lions, I moved to the United States to take classes in advanced baseball and leadership. The first team I went to was the "Kingstone" team, the Cleveland Indians Single-A team, in 1998, and the Charlotte Knights team, the Chicago White Sox Triple-A team, in 1999.

Starting in 2000, he served as a leader of the Chicago White Sox until 2006. Even if you look at this, you can see too many things that are similar to conductor Ham Shin-ik. As mentioned earlier, if you list his career, you can't even write it all down. In particular, in 1995, he was the first Korean to serve as a professor of the music department at the Yeil University and served at Yeil University until 2018.

Above all, conductor Ham Shin-ik was born in 1957, one year older than me. I was born in 1958, so we have been friends with each other and have been living together in a good relationship so far.

Conductor Ham Shin-ik sent me a message on Aug. 4. I was immersed in many thoughts while reading his article. I have also been working hard to run the Hulk Foundation. However, conductor Ham Shin-ik saw that it is not difficult to lead more than 60 members, but more than 80 members, not alone.

We don't know how many times we only see the back of a brilliant and wonderful conductor. Of course, I was also the same with them. While talking and living with conductor Ham Shin-ik, I came to see many of his hard and difficult hardships. I also met donors across the country to lead the small Hulk Foundation.

I don't know how many times I've tried to stop because I felt heavy for days and days due to unexpected things at times when I met a donor. However, even though he is the best academic background, career, and a conductor respected by many people, conductor Ham Shin-ik was honestly shocked by the story that he, like me, would become a salesman and run around the country to perform.

Who would have imagined that a conductor with the highest reputation and authority would run to the donors and extend his hand every time he performed? If you have 6 - 80 members, you have to run hard to pay them a salary. And whenever there is a performance, he runs around and sells tickets.

While living together, I saw him act as a salesman by his side. So I asked this question once. "Aren't you ashamed?" "Aren't you ashamed?" "Aren't you humiliated?" Why wouldn't you think it was you? However, if you think about it like that, you will never be able to lead the members.

If you belong to a large organization or an orchestra such as KBS, the conductor does not have to run around to find donors. However, in order to lead the members under the name of the orchestra, Hahm Shin-ik and Symphony Song, we must devote all our energy to lead the members over the past decade. He has come so far with the will and determination to give everything he has done in the past decade to do things properly that no one has ever done.Conductor Ham Shin-ik is said to have worked so far for his passion and future without having anything to run the orchestra since its inception in 2014. His desperation has made him what he is now. Me too. Without the urgency to spread baseball, I would never have gone down to Laos, where the environment is poor and poor.

He always talks about this. When he came to Korea after ending his splendid career in the U.S., he was amazed by his courage to create a new orchestra with only his skills and passion. Eleven years have passed since the beginning, and it has formed an axis of the new Korean orchestra culture and grown into an art organization run by the private sector.

As I wrote on my Facebook page last time, "Easy things can be chosen by anyone. Difficult things are not easy to challenge. However, if someone accomplishes another difficult but valuable task in the world, it will never be something that others do not consider difficult and will not give up. We must challenge and pioneer these tasks.

As I have written before, anyone can do anything easy. However, if someone does something difficult, it is not called a difficult task from then on. In order for that to happen, someone must challenge and pave the way for the seemingly difficult task."

Due to the success story of conductor Ham Shin-ik, it can be seen that it is now being benchmarked by many young juniors in the Korean music industry. Honestly, it's easy to say, but I know very well how hard and difficult this job is. Honestly, it has been said many times over the past 11 years that when baseball was distributed by going down to the Indochina Peninsula, it is difficult to sustain even a year, but it is a surprising miracle that we were able to come this far.

Creating such a miracle requires sacrifices and dedication from countless people. Needless to say, economic support is needed, and it cannot be done without the help of numerous juniors to exercise in hot weather with them. Of course, I didn't stop until the first year and a few years and ran around alone, but in order to increase the scale and scale, I reached a stage where I couldn't do it alone until long.

Fortunately, from then on, one or two Hulk Foundation staff members began to gather to dedicate themselves. Looking at the staff members, I saw that it was possible to spread baseball to Southeast Asia. What was unforgettable even now was that a huge donation from Daegu Bank's DGB Chairman Kim Tae-oh was made to meet and build a wonderful baseball stadium for the first time in Laos along with "Hulk Foundation."

The baseball stadium we wanted so much was secured for the first time in Laos in 2020, and now all players are able to practice stably without being anxious. If we list our sponsors, big and small, until today, there are enough people to fill the whole land with tears of emotion.

Whenever I see conductor Ham Shin-ik, what I realize is that I constantly challenge myself and try to create something new. It was the world's first large cargo 'wing-body' truck that no one thought of and turned it into an outdoor concert stage to spread the culture by visiting every corner of Korea.

I still can't forget it. The way conductor Ham Shin-ik modified a truck and played around the country of Korea with orchestra members 10 years ago still remains in my mind. Of course, I will never forget the way I climbed on the truck and conducted in front of the members. When I saw all the members moving in one piece at a time due to my humble hand movements, I was so ecstatic that I felt like my breath was taken away.

After remodeling the truck, designing, operating, and managing it for the past 10 years, I was very happy to hear that I was old and had a new first generation and the launch of The Wing for the second generation. Symphony Song with Ham Shin-ik has been running to fulfill the important founding goal of social contribution.

As mentioned earlier, the world's first moving orchestra has been accompanied by about 50 performers on the truck stage with the best sound facilities and traveling around the country to the fullest. In the fall of 2023, when the first-generation truck is aging and problems with various parts arise, a new truck stage, which designs and manufactures the professional know-how acquired through trial and error and various performances of the past decade, was born.

Conductor Ham Shin-ik said, "One of the ways to share his talent and love with the people of the Republic of Korea is sharing culture. We must acknowledge his value. He always says. Relying on the noble donors' "true good deeds do not leave names" is to do their best to the end without forgetting their gratitude.

Most of the symphony songs with Ham Shin-ik have been sponsoring for more than 10 years since their foundation, and most of them do not speak out quietly. No matter how difficult the economy is, the best return to symphony songs with Hahm Shin-ik, who do not silently stop sponsoring the company even when it suffers from financial difficulties, and who help them stay active in great concert halls and across the country, is to deliver good music to more people with the best music and let young performers show their best to the audience.

Conductor Ham Shin-ik said that it is to create a beautiful world to make sure that the value of an artist remains long in the history of the orchestra as long as Korea delivers small but true art, and that is the small but true wish that conductor Ham Shin-ik pursues.
