< 나의 룸 메이트 조문식 감독 >

지난 5월 13일, 경북 김천에 있는 ‘도립김천노인요양병원’을 방문해 원장님과 이사장님, 직원들과 뜻깊은 시간을 보냈다. 이후 곧장 구미로 내려가 구미중학교 야구부 선수들을 만났다. 오랜만에 찾은 현장이었지만, 늘 그렇듯 야구를 통한 재능기부는 내게 특별한 감동을 안겨준다.

구미중 야구부를 이끄는 이는 조문식 감독이다. 1994년, 경북고등학교를 졸업하자마자 삼성라이온즈에 입단한 유망한 투수 조문식. 그 해, 그는 나의 룸메이트였다.

지금도 선명하다. 조문식이 막 프로에 입단했을 때, 우리는 함께 방을 썼다. 호주의 ‘골드코스트’ 전지훈련부터 시즌 내내 생활을 함께했다. 신인 선수가 베테랑 선배와 룸메이트를 한다는 건 쉬운 일이 아니었을 것이다. 그럼에도 조문식은 이렇게 말해준다.

“감독님과 함께 생활하면서 정말 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 그땐 솔직히 숨도 제대로 못 쉬었지만, 그 시간이 제 인생에 가장 소중한 배움이었습니다.”

어린 나이에 프로에 들어온 조문식은 말 그대로 아무것도 모르는 신인이었다. 하루하루 훈련이 무엇인지, 어떻게 개인연습을 해야 하는지, 식사부터 회복, 정신 관리까지… 나는 그에게 하나씩 알려주었다. 잔소리처럼 들렸을지도 모르지만, 조문식은 늘 성실하게 따라왔다.

하루는 “선배님, 매일 밤 노트에 뭘 적으십니까?” 라고 묻기에, “야구일지랑 일기야.” 라고 대답해주었다. 그리고 그 말 한마디가 그의 평생 습관이 되었다. 조문식은 그날 이후, 자신만의 '야구일지'와 '일기'를 지금까지 하루도 빠짐없이 적고있다.

나는 훈련이 없을 땐 책을 읽었고, 원정경기나 캠프에서도 늘 정해진 루틴을 지키며 외부 활동보다 자기 관리를 우선시했다. 조문식은 내 생활 습관을 눈여겨봤다며 말한다.
“힘들고 어려운 시간이었지만, 선배님과 똑같이 생활하고 훈련하면서 자연스럽게 좋은 습관을 몸에 익힐 수 있었습니다.”

그 습관은 지금 조문식 감독의 제자들에게 이어지고 있다. 구미중학교에서 지도자로 일한 지도 어느덧 12년째. 그는 야구 기술보다 더 중요한 것을 선수들에게 강조한다. 기록하는 습관, 인성교육, 그리고 ‘인사’.

이날, 나는 구미중학교 선수들에게 물었다.
“일기랑 야구일지, 쓰고 있니?”
모두가 “예!” 하고 대답했다. 놀라지 않을 수 없었다. 수십 년간 전국을 다니며 수많은 중·고등학교 선수들을 만났지만 모든 선수가 일기와 야구일지를 쓰는 경우는 처음이었다.

“어떻게 그렇게 철저하게 적을 수 있지?”
조문식 감독이 웃으며 말했다.
“제가 매주 꼭 체크하거든요. 그리고 선수들에게 귀가 따갑도록 말합니다. 스스로의 하루를 기록하는 습관이 얼마나 중요한지.”

조 감독은 인성교육도 빠뜨리지 않는다. “야구선수이기 전에 먼저 바른 사람이 되어야 한다”고 늘 강조한단다. 특히 인사를 가장 중요하게 여긴다. 어디에서든 어른을 만나면, 스쳐 가는 사람이라도 인사를 잘하는 아이들로 키우고 싶다는 마음. 그 마음이 실제로 구미 시민들에게도 전해져 구미중학교 야구부 선수들은 학교 안팎에서 좋은 평가를 받고 있다고 한다.

이날 조 감독이 선수들을 지도하는 모습을 바라보며 가슴 깊이 짜릿한 감정이 밀려왔다. 한때는 야구밖에 모르던 소년, 룸메이트 시절엔 늘 나를 따라오던 그가 이제는 한 팀을 이끄는 든든한 지도자가 되어 있었다. 조문식 감독의 성장과 변화를 지켜본 나는 참으로 기쁘고, 자랑스럽다.

선배가 후배에게 전한 하루의 습관이 이제는 한 세대를 키우는 힘이 되었다. 30년 전의 룸메이트가 오늘의 지도자가 되어 또 다른 꿈을 키우고 있다. 그 모습을 보며, 나는 다시 한번 야구 인생의 참된 의미를 되새긴다.

On May 13, I visited the Provincial Gimcheon Senior Nursing Hospital in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and had a meaningful time with the director, the chairman, and the staff. After that, I went straight to Gumi and met the baseball players of Gumi Middle School. It was a scene I visited for the first time in a long time, but as always, talent donation through baseball gives me a special impression.

Leading the Gumi Middle School baseball team is Jo Moon-sik. In 1994, Jo Moon-sik, a promising pitcher who joined the Samsung Lions as soon as he graduated from Gyeongbuk High School. That year, he was my roommate.

It is clear even now. When Jo just joined the professional league, we shared a room together. They have lived together all season since the training for the "Gold Coast" in Australia. It would not have been easy for a rookie to be roommates with a veteran player. Still, Jo says this.

"I learned so much from living with the director. Honestly, I couldn't breathe properly then, but that was the most precious learning in my life."

Jo was a rookie who didn't know anything when he entered the professional league at a young age. He talked about what daily training is, how to practice individually, from meals to recovery and mental management… I let him know one by one. It may sound like a nag, but the condolence ceremony has always been faithfully followed.

One day, when asked, "Senior, what do you write in your notebook every night?" he replied, "It's a baseball diary and a diary." And each word has become a lifelong habit. The condolence ceremony has been writing down his own "baseball diary" and "diary" every single day since that day.

I read books when I was not trained, and I always followed set routines at away games and camps, putting my self-management above external activities. "I have noticed my lifestyle," Cho says.

"It was a difficult and difficult time, but I was able to naturally learn good habits by living and training the same as my senior."

It is now passed down to Jo's students. He has been a leader at Gumi Middle School for 12 years. He stresses to his players what is more important than baseball skills: recording habits, personality training, and "greeting."

On this day, I asked Gumi Middle School players."Are you writing a diary and a baseball diary?"Everyone replied, "Yes!" I couldn't help but be surprised. He has met numerous middle and high school players across the country for decades, but it was the first time that all players wrote diaries and baseball journals.

"How can you write it down so thoroughly?"Director Jo Moon-sik said with a smile.

"I make sure to check every week. And I tell the players my ears are burning. How important it is to keep track of your day."

Cho does not miss out on personality training as well. He always emphasizes, "Be a good person before you become a baseball player." Especially, greetings are the most important thing. Whenever I meet an adult, I want to raise them as children who are good at greeting even those whom I pass by. Indeed, such feelings have been conveyed to Gumi citizens, and Gumi Middle School players are said to be receiving positive reviews both inside and outside the school.

Watching Cho guide the players on the day, I was deeply touched. He was a boy who used to only know baseball, and who always followed me when he was a roommate, and now he is a strong leader of a team. I am very happy and proud to see Cho grow and change.

The daily habit that a senior told a junior has now become a force to raise a generation. My roommate from 30 years ago became today's leader and is developing another dream. Looking at that, I reflect on the true meaning of baseball life once again.
