'개천에서 용난다' 라는 속담은, 가난하거나 보잘것 없는 환경에서 뛰어난 인물이 나오는 경우를 비유적으로 표현한 말로 어려운 환경에서도 노력과 재능으로 큰 성공을 이룰 수 있다는 희망과 가능성을 상징하는 말이다.

지난 7월 30일 대한민국 유소년야구 국가대표팀이 제8회 세계유소년(U-12) 야구선수권대회 예선 전승으로 슈퍼라운드에 올라갔다는 소식을 뉴스로 접했다. 대한민국 유소년야구 국가대표팀이 본선에 올라가 역대 최고 성적인 동메달을 땄다.

그것도 홈팀인 대만을 상대로 2:0으로 승리했다. 이번 대회에서 나를 놀라게 했던 것은 바로 U-12 야구대표팀 에이스인 ‘권윤서 투수’다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 고등학교 후배인 백종길 후배로부터 여러번 나에게 전화해 기회가 되시면 꼭 한번 경북 경산시에 있는 진량에 내려와 자라나는 어린아이들을 위해 재능기부해 달라는 것이다. 후배의 간곡한 부탁이거니와, 열악하고 환경이 좋지 않은 곳에서 어린아이들이 야구한다는 이야기를 듣고 그냥 지나칠 수가 없었다. 바쁜 일정이지만 만사를 제쳐두고 대구로 내려갔다.

어린아이들을 지도하는 감독이 바로 목사란다. 목사님이 야구를 좋아하고 또 시골에서 어린아이들이 야구를 좋아해 어떻게 하면 이들에게 꿈과 희망을 전해주고 함께 할 수 있을지 늘 고민하다가 야구단을 만들게 되었다고 한다. 추운 겨울에는 시골의 우사 건물을 개조해 실내에서 야구할 수 있도록 만들었다.

어린선수들을 봉고에 태우고, 훈련이 끝나면 대려다주고, 간식을 챙겨주고, 직접 어린선수들을 지도하다가 어린선수들이 급성장하자 더 이상 이들을 지도할 수 없다는 생각에 백종길 후배 아들에게 유소년 야구팀을 맡겼다고 한다.

솔직히 경북 진량에 있는 유소년 선수들이라기에 기량이 동네 수준 밖에 되지 않을 것이라 생각했다. 그런데, 선수들과 함께 몸을 풀면서 야구하는 모습을 보며 깜짝 놀라지 않을 수가 없었다. 유소년 선수들이라고는 믿어지지 않을 정도로 실력이 좋았다. 특히 나의 눈을 사로 잡은 선수가 바로 권윤서 투수였다.

공을 던지는 능력도 빼어나지만 무엇보다 안정된 수비와 송구는 일반 야구 선수들과 견주어도 손색이 없었다. 거기다가 타격을 하는 모습을 보고 입이 다물어지지 않았다. 어떻게 초등학생 5학년의 어린 선수가 이렇게 다방면으로 잘 할 수 있는지 믿어지지 않았다. 전문적으로 야구를 배운것도 아니었다. 비 야구인 권병훈 목사한테 지도를 받은 것이 전부였다.

처음 권윤서 선수를 보게 된 것은 빅토리드림즈 유소년야구단이다. 경산시 진량읍 보인길에 위치한 허름한 우사 건물을 개조해 만든 창고같은 곳이었다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것이 겉으로 보기에는 허름한 우사 건물처럼 보였지만 막상 출입문 셔터를 열고 들어가자 따뜻한 난로가 실내의 추위를 잡아주고, 선수들이 다치지 않도록 인도잔디가 깔려 있어 멋지게 보였다.

목회자인 아버지 권병훈씨는 원래 마을의 공동 우사로 쓰이던 곳을 빌려 윤서와 동네 아이들이 야구를 할 수 있는 공간으로 만들었고 한다. 바닥에 깔려있는 인조잔디는 울산 한 야구아카데미에서 버린 것을 주어서 만들었다고 한다.

지난달 8월 3일 한국 U-12 야구대표팀이 제8회 세계유소년야구선수권대회에서 대회 사상 첫 동메달을 땄을 때의 주인공이 바로 권윤서 투수였다. 이 대회에서 대만 팀 상대로 2 : 0으로 이길 때까지 혼자서 다 던졌다. 이는 한국 유소년 야구가 세계 무대에서 첫 메달의 기쁨을 맛본 역사적 순간이다.

열악한 환경에서 닭장 같은 좁은 공간에서 세계적인 어린선수가 탄생했다는 것이 얼마나 놀라운 사실인지 모른다.

한국 유소년 야구가 세계 무대에서 첫 동메달을 따게 된 것 또한 절대 우연이 아님을 이번 권윤서 투수를 보며 알게 되었다. 열악한 환경과 열악한 훈련장 그리고 몇명 되지 않는 시골에서 야구를 사랑하는 아이들이 모여 시작한 것이 이렇게 세계적인 어린선수가 탄생하는 서막이 되었다.

개천에서 용이 났다고 표현했지만, 권윤서 선수의 피나는 훈련과 노력을 통해 앞으로 대한민국을 이끌어 가는 훌륭한 선수로 성장하리라 믿는다.

On July 30, the news broke that the South Korean youth baseball national team went to the super round with a victory in the preliminary round of the 8th World Youth (U-12) Baseball Championship. The South Korean youth baseball national team went to the finals and won the bronze medal, the highest record ever.

The team also had a 2-0 win over Taiwan, its home team. The thing that surprised me at this year's championship was "Kwon Yoon-seo, the ace pitcher of the U-12 national baseball team."

I still can't forget it. Baek Jong-gil, a junior in high school, called me several times and asked me to donate my talents to young children growing up in Jinryang, Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, if possible. It was a earnest request from my junior, and I couldn't overlook hearing that young children play baseball in a poor and poor environment. Despite my busy schedule, I left everything behind and went to Daegu.

The director who guides young children is the pastor. It is said that the pastor loves baseball and children in the countryside love baseball, so he always thought about how to give them dreams and hopes and be together, and then formed a baseball team. In the cold winter, the countryside Usa building was renovated so that baseball could be played indoors.

He put young players in Bongo, gave them snacks after training, and coached young players himself, but when young players grew rapidly, he thought that he could no longer coach them, so he entrusted the youth baseball team to his junior son Baek Jong-gil.

To be honest, since they are young players in Jinryang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, I thought their skills would be only the level of the neighborhood. However, I couldn't help but be surprised to see them warming up and playing baseball with the players. They were so good that I couldn't believe they were young players. In particular, pitcher Kwon Yoon-seo caught my eye.

He was excellent at throwing the ball, but above all, his stable defense and throwing were comparable to ordinary baseball players. On top of that, he couldn't keep his mouth shut when he saw him hit. I couldn't believe how a young player in the fifth grade could do so well in so many ways. He didn't even learn baseball professionally. He was coached by Pastor Kwon Byung-hoon, a non-baseball player.

Kwon Yoon-seo was first seen by the Victory Dreams youth baseball team. It was like a warehouse constructed from a shabby Usa building located in Boyne-gil, Jinryang-eup, Gyeongsan-si. What is still haunting today looked like a shabby Usa building, but when I opened the shutters of the door, a warm stove was used to control the cold inside and cover the sidewalks to prevent players from getting hurt.

His father, Kwon Byung-hoon, a pastor, rented a place that was originally used as a common friendship in the village and made it a space for Yoon-seo and local children to play baseball. Artificial grass on the floor is said to have been made by giving it away from a baseball academy in Ulsan.

When the Korean U-12 baseball team won its first bronze medal at the 8th World Youth Championship on Aug. 3, it was Kwon Yoon-seo. He threw it all by himself until the team won 2:0 against the Taiwanese team in the championship. This is a historic moment when Korean youth baseball enjoyed its first medal on the world stage.

How surprising it is that a world-class young player was born in a small space such as a chicken coop in a poor environment.

Looking at pitcher Kwon Yoon-seo, I learned that it is no coincidence that Korean youth baseball won its first bronze medal on the world stage. The poor environment, poor training ground, and the gathering of baseball-loving children in the countryside of few people became the prelude to the birth of such a world-class young player.

Although he expressed that he had a dragon in Gaecheon, he believes that he will grow into a great player who will lead the Republic of Korea in the future through Kwon Yoon-seo's bloody training and efforts.
