< 사람들의 외면 속에서도 꽃은 피고 있다 >

원주를 대표할 수 있는 것이 치악산이다. 치악산은 특히 사계절 모두 경치가 좋은 팔방미인의 명산이라고 이야기 한다. 그런데 거기에 걸맞는 소프트볼 팀이 있다. 원주시에 있는 상지대학교에 소프트볼 팀이 있는데 전국에서 가장 잘하고 매년 전국대회를 휩쓰는 팀이다.

올해 들어와 '2025 회장기 전국소프트볼대회'에서 4전 전승으로 우승했다. 상지대 소프트볼 이후정 감독은 매년 선수들 10 - 12명 데리고 전국대회를 치룬다. 올해도 선수 10명 데리고 전국대회에 출전해 우승할 정도로 뛰어난 선수들을 보유하고 있다.

지난 5월 20일 이후정 감독을 만나기 위해 원주로 갔다. 코로나가 발생하고 5년 만에 처음 간것 같다. 이날 이 감독을 만나 훈련 중에 잠시 짬을 내어 여러가지 이야기를 나누었다. 도대체 현재 10명의 선수들을 데리고 어떻게 전국대회를 매년 우승할 수 있었느냐? 물어보니 상지대학교 들어올 때 대부분 선수들이 보통 선수들이라고 한다. 잘하는 선수들은 외지인 상지대학교에 오지 않으려고 한다고 한다.

여자 선수들이 비록 잘하지 못하지만 최고의 선수가 되기까지 많은 훈련과 뛰어난 지도력을 갖춘 이후정 감독의 지도 아래 이렇게 좋은 성적을 낼 수 있었다. 특히 상지대학교 소프트볼 팀의 강점은 '원주태장체육단지' 안에 야구장 4면과 소프트볼 구장 하나를 갖고 있어 언제라도 중, 고, 대학교 지도자들에게 많은 도움을 받는다고 한다.

그리고 선수들이 없기 때문에 한 선수가 2 - 3 포지션을 감당할 수 있도록 만든다고 한다. 이후정 감독을 보면 오랜 감독생활을 하면서 선수들에게 왜 운동을 하며 왜 훈련을 하는지에 대해 끊임 없이 선수들에게 설명한다고 한다. 거기다가 여자선수들이라 개인적으로 하고 싶은 일들이 많지만 일단 소프트볼 선수들이기 때문에 최선을 다해 개인연습과 단체훈련에 참여해야 한다며 이야기 한다.

또 한가지는 비록 여자선수들이기 때문에 데이트도 하고 싶고 맛난 것도 먹고 싶고 멋진 곳에도 놀러가고 싶지만 무엇이 먼저인지 선수들에게 철저하게 교육시킨다고 한다. 그리고 대학생이기 때문에 가장 먼저 수업에 대해 많은 이야기 한다고 한다. 오전이나 오후에 운동하면 저녁부터 야간 수업은 철저하게 모두 참여해야 한다.

이후정 감독의 말에 의하면 야간 공부해도 과에서 최고의 점수를 받는 선수들도 있다며 자랑한다. 낮에는 운동으로 저녁에는 공부로 자신의 시간을 비록 많이 갖지 못하지만 상지대학을 졸업한 많은 선수들이 대학시절 이런 과정들이 싫어서 뛰쳐 나간 선수들도 있다고 한다.

그러나 끝까지 인내하며 훈련과 수업을 변행하며 졸업했던 많은 선수들이 그 시절이 너무 그립고 좋았다고 한다. 이렇게 상지대학을 졸업하고 나간 많은 선수들이 실업팀이나 사회로 진출해 멋지게 인생을 사는 선수들이 많다고 한다.

소프트볼 야구는 비인기 종목이라 어느 누구도 관심을 갖지 않기 때문에 진로나 취업에 있어 너무 힘들다고 한다. 그런데 어린시절부터 소프트볼이 좋아 시작했던 선수들이 장래에 대해 큰 보장이 없어도 이들은 소프트볼이 좋아 손을 놓을 수가 없단다.

이날 소프트볼 선수들과 같이 이야기 나누고 또 같이 사진도 찍고 훈련하는 장면을 보는데 야구하는 선수들과 똑 같이 훈련한다. 아리따운 얼굴을 갖고 있는 선수들이 얼굴이 검게 타는데도 아랑곳 하지 않고 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리면서 팔굽히 운동도 하고 무거운 물통을 어깨에 지고 30도가 넘는 인조잔디에서 달리는 이들이야 말로 진정한 대한민국 여장부들이다.

나는 한평생 55년 동안 한길로 달려온 사람이다. 평생 한길로 달려오면서 느낀것은 야구는 단순히 야구 이상의 가치를 지니고 있음을 인생을 살면서 많이 깨닫고 있다. 나의 어린시절이나 성인이 되어서도 우리나라 지도자들의 고정관념을 버리지 못하고 살아온 야구인들이 얼마나 많았는지 모른다.

솔직히 지도자들로 인해 선수들의 성장을 방해하는 일들이 얼마나 많은지... 내가 야구할 때만 해도 낡은 시대의 엄하고 호랑이 지도자들로 인해 유능하고 젊은선수들이 제대로 꽃도 피우지 못하고 어린 나이에 야구를 그만 둔 선수들이 부지기수다. 지금은 예전에 비해 많이 사라졌지만 아직도 구시대적인 훈련 방법과 교육으로 인해 어린선수들이 제대로 자신의 기량을 운동장에서 뽑내지 못하고 사라진 선수들이 많음을 보게 된다.

앞에서도 이야기 했지만 지금은 많이 사라졌지만 아직 그런 지도자는 없겠지만 '낡은 시대의 호랑이 감독에 대한 환상이 여전히 남아 있지는 않은지 야구인의 한사람으로서 솔직히 염려가 된다.' 지도자들은 원칙을 갖고 있데 선수들이 무엇을 원하고 어떻게 지도해야 성장 할 수 있을지에 대해 끊임 없이 연구하고 공부해야 한다.

선수들은 지도자에 따라 따라오게 하는 것이 아니라 지도자가 선수들을 어떻게 하면 지도자가 원하는 방향으로 끌고 갈 수 있을지에 대해 끊임없이 공부하고 또 공부해야 한다. 이렇게 할 때 그 팀은 100년이고 200년이고 흔들림 없이 전통적인 팀이 될 수 있다. 지도자가 바뀔 때마다 팀 색깔이 바뀐다는 것은 다시 생각해 보아야 할 문제다.

미국 메이저리그인 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 마이너리그와 메이저리그에서 생활 하면서 깨달은 것은 그 팀의 색깔은 좀처럼 바뀌지 않는다. 아무리 훌륭한 지도자가 있더라도 새로운 팀에 가면 그 팀에 맞는 색깔로 맞추어 가야 하는 것이 이들이 지향하는 야구다.

상지대학교 소프트볼 이후정 감독은 사령탑, 운전기사, 기숙사 사감까지 맞는 1인 3역을 도맡고 있다. 이 감독이 상지대 소프트볼 감독을 맡은 것이 2016년 3월이니 벌써 10년째가 된다.

한 팀을 10년씩 맡아서 한다는 것은 그만큼 지도자로서 인정을 받았기 때문이다. 물론 지난 10년 동안 탄탄한 길만 걸어온 것은 아니다. 어려움이 있을 때마다 이 감독은 자신을 보기보다 가장 먼저 자신을 믿고 따라와준 선수들을 먼저 생각하지 않을 수가 없었다고 한다. 어려움의 고비가 올 때마다 그는 묵묵하게 소프트볼을 살리기 위해 밤낮 가리지 않고 뛰어 다녔다고 한다.

비인기 종목인 소프트볼은 좀처럼 여자선수들이 하지 않으려고 하는 것이 문제였다. 비인기 종목인 대다가 힘든 운동을 견디는 것도 만만치 않았다. 그래서 그런지 시간이 갈수록 어린 여자선수들이 비인기 종목인 소프트볼을 하지 않으려고 한다. 그래도 상지대학교는 1994년도에 창단한 소프트볼 팀은 전국을 제패하며 종횡무진했다. 역사와 전통을 자랑하는 상지대학교가 가장 어려운 문제가 '선수 수급이 가장 어려운 문제라고 한다.'

이날 상지대학교 소프트볼 선수들이 훈련하는데 10명 밖에 되지 않았다. 어느 해는 선수가 9명 밖에 없어 한명이라도 다치는 날이 생기면 경기 도중 기권을 해야 한다고 한다. 지금도 선수 10명을 데리고 훈련하고 경기해야 하기 때문에 이후정 감독이 피를 마르도록 신경을 써야 한다고 한다.

무작정 연습만 많이 한다고 해서 잘하는 것이 아님을 어느 누구보다 이 감독이 잘 알고 있다. 너무 무리하게 훈련 시켰다가 혹 부상 선수라도 생기면 큰일이기 때문에 이 감독은 어느 지도자들보다 더 많이 연구하고 또 연구하지 않으면 안 된다고 한다.

상지대학교 소프트볼 팀은 몇번 해체 위기에 빠져도 이감독의 흔들리지 않고 굳건한 심정으로 지금까지 팀과 선수들을 이끌어 왔다. 물론 해체가 되지 않기 위해 가장 많이 노력하고 뛰어 다닌 사람이 이후정 감독이다. 이 감독의 헌신과 열정을 본 강원도 체육회는 원주의 자랑이자 명예가 걸린 일이라 강원도 체육회에서 가장 먼저 발벗고 나서기 시작했다.

지금도 이 감독은 상지대학교 총장님과 지역 체육회가 많은 도움을 주고 있단다. 강원도 체육회에서 재정적 도움으로 인해 알뜰한 이 감독은 비록 적은 액수지만 그것을 헡으로 사용하지 않고 팀을 잘 끌고 갈 수 있도록 절약하며 팀을 이끌어 가고 있다고 한다.

이 감독을 여러번 만났지만 만날 때마다 느끼는 것은 '선수들이 안정적으로 운동하고 공부할 수 있는 환경만 조성 된다면 어떤 어려움이 있더라도 견딜 수 있다고 한다. 지난 20일 만날 때도 이감독은 선수들이 비록 비인기 종목이지만 많은 선수들이 국가대표가 되어서 대한민국의 자랑스러운 소프트볼을 전세계에 알리는 선수들이 많이 나오기를 기대한다고 한다.

작년에 이어 올해도 대한민국 프로야구는 1000만명 돌파라는 위대한 업적을 올리고 있는 상황이다. 이런 호황 속에서도 비인기 종목인 소프트볼은 사람들의 외면 속에서도 굳건하게 살아남기 위해 오늘도 모든 선수들이 30도가 넘는 그라운드에서 땀을 흘리며 달리고 있다.

There is a softball team at Sangji University in Wonju, which is the best team in the country and sweeps the national competition every year.

He won the "2025 National Softball Championship" by winning all four games this year. Coach Lee Ho-jung of Sangji University takes 10 to 12 players to the national championship every year. He is armed with outstanding players enough to take 10 players to win the national championship this year.

After May 20, I went to Wonju to meet coach Chung. I think it's my first time in 5 years after the COVID-19 outbreak. I met coach Lee on this day and we had a little time to talk about various things during training. How on earth did you manage to take 10 current players to win the national championship every year? When I asked, most of the players when they entered Sangji University, they said they were average players. It is said that players who are good at it try not to come to Sangji University, which is a foreign country.

Although female players are not good, they have been able to perform well under the guidance of coach Lee Hu-jung with a lot of training and excellent leadership until they become the best players. In particular, the strength of the softball team at Sangji University is that it has four baseball fields and a softball stadium in the "Wonju Taejang Sports Complex," which means it gets a lot of help from middle, high school, and university leaders at any time.

And since there are no players, it is said that one player can handle two to three positions. Coach Lee says that he constantly explains to players why he exercises and trains while he has been a manager for a long time. He also says that there are many things that he wants to do individually because they are female players, but since they are softball players, he should do his best to participate in individual and group training.

Another thing is that because they are female athletes, they want to go on a date, eat delicious food, and go to nice places, but they thoroughly educate the players about what comes first. And because they are college students, they talk a lot about class first. If you exercise in the morning or afternoon, you have to participate in all night classes thoroughly from the evening.

Coach Lee Ho-jung said, "Some players get the best score in the department even if they study at night." Although many players who graduated from Sangji University do not have much time to exercise during the day and study at night, some players ran out because they did not like these courses in college.

However, many of the athletes who persevered until the end and graduated from training and classes said they missed those days and were very happy. Many of the athletes who graduated from Sangji University are said to have entered the business team or society and lived a wonderful life.

Softball baseball is an unpopular sport, so no one is interested in it, so it is said that it is too difficult for career or employment. However, even if the players who started because they liked softball since childhood do not have a big guarantee about their future, they cannot let go because they like softball.

On this day, I talked with softball players, took pictures together, and watched them train together, and they train the same as baseball players. Players with beautiful faces are the real Korean women who sweat a lot even though their faces burn black, working out in the hoof, and running on artificial turf over 30 degrees with heavy water bottles on their shoulders.

I am a person who has run on one path for 55 years in my life. What I have felt as I have been running on one path all my life is that baseball is more than just baseball. I don't know how many baseball players have not been able to abandon the stereotypes of Korean leaders even in my childhood or adulthood.

Honestly, there are so many things that hinder the growth of players because of the leadership. When I played baseball, the strict tiger leaders of the old era made it impossible for competent and young players to blossom properly, and there were many players who quit baseball at a young age. Although it has disappeared a lot now compared to the past, many young players still have disappeared without being able to pull their skills off the field due to outdated training methods and education.

As I said earlier, there are not many leaders like that yet, but as a baseball player, I am honestly concerned that the fantasy of an old tiger coach still remains. Leaders have principles, and they need to constantly study and study what players want and how to guide them to grow.

Rather than having them follow their leader, they should constantly study, study, and learn how the leader can lead them in the direction that the leader wants. This way, a team can become a traditional team that is 100 or 200 years old and unwavering. It is a matter of reconsideration that the team's color changes every time a leader changes.

What I realized while living in the Minor League and Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, the U.S. Major League, is that the team's color rarely changes. No matter how good a leader is, when he or she goes to a new team, he or she has to match the color of that team.

Coach Lee Hu-jung of Sangji University is in charge of three roles, including the head coach, driver, and dormitory supervisor. It is already the 10th year since Lee took over the softball coach of Sangji University in March 2016.

Ten years in charge of each team is because he has been recognized as a leader. Of course, the team has not only taken solid steps over the past decade. Whenever there was a difficulty, Lee said, he had to think of the players who trusted and followed him first, rather than seeing him. Whenever he faced a difficult time, he silently ran around day and night to save the softball.

The problem with softball, an unpopular sport, was that female athletes rarely try to play it. It was also difficult to endure the difficult sport despite being an unpopular sport. Perhaps this is why young female athletes try not to play softball, an unpopular sport, as time goes by. Nonetheless, Sangji University's softball team, which was founded in 1994, dominated the nation and was prosperous. Sangji University, which boasts history and tradition, said that the most difficult problem is that it is said that the supply and demand of players is the most difficult problem

On the day, only 10 softball players were training at Sangji University. One year, since there are only nine players, if at least one player gets hurt, the softball players have to withdraw during the match. Since the softball players still have to train and play with 10 players, coach Lee should pay attention to dry his blood.

Lee knows better than anyone else that practicing too much does not mean you are good at it. Lee must study and study more than any other leaders because it would be a big deal if players get injured after training too much.

Sangji University's softball team has led the team and players so far with Lee's unwavering and firm heart, no matter how many times they are on the verge of disbanding. Of course, it is coach Lee Hu-jeong who has tried and run the most not to be disbanded. Seeing Lee's dedication and passion, the Gangwon Provincial Sports Association began to take the first step in the Gangwon Provincial Sports Association because it was Wonju's pride and honor.

Even now, the head of Sangji University and the local sports association are helping him a lot. Lee, who is thrifty due to financial help from the Gangwon Provincial Sports Association, is said to be leading the team, saving money to lead the team well without using it in vain, even though it is a small amount.

I've met coach Lee several times, but what I feel every time I meet him is that he can endure any difficulties as long as it creates an environment where players can exercise and study stably. Even when meeting on the 20th, coach Lee said he expects many players to become national players and promote Korea's proud softball to the world, although it is an unpopular sport.

Following last year, Korean professional baseball has achieved a great achievement of exceeding 10 million this year. Despite such a boom, softball, an unpopular sport, is still running with all the players sweating on the ground above 30 degrees today in order to survive firmly in the face of people.
