< 박효철 감독을 아시나요? >

박효철 감독이 베트남 하노이에 들어간지 어느덧 4년째가 된다. 지금도 잊을 수 없는 것은 2022년 6월 4일 첫 훈련할 때가 생각이 난다. 이날따라 그해 들어와 가장 높은 섭씨 37도를 기록했다. 6월초에 섭씨 37도는 가만히 있어도 구슬땀처럼 흐르는 정말 무더운 날씨다. 거기다가 체감 온다가 45도가 넘을 정도이니....

베트남의 날씨는 우리나라처럼 습하기로 유명한 나라다. 나야 이미 라오스에서 많은 경험을 한 상태라 그나마 견딜 수 있었지만 처음 접해본 박효철 감독에게는 상당히 곤혹스러운 날씨였을 것이다. 거기다가 바람 한점 없는 무더운 날씨와 습한 공기로 인해 몇분이 되지 않아 땀으로 이미 유니폼이 다 젖은 상태다.

이들 베트남 선수들은 이미 더위에 익숙한 선수들이지만 이들 또한 습한 더위에는 견딜 수 없었는지 쉬는 시간마다 물을 마시고 그늘을 찾는다. 박효철 감독은 미국에서의 오랜 생활을 접고 베트남에 들어와 낯선 환경에 적응하는 모습을 보며 진정한 야구인이라 생각이 들었다. 그렇게 시작했던 박효철 감독도 어느덧 4년째가 되었다니 솔직히 믿어지지 않을 뿐이다.

지난 4년 동안 여러번 박효철 감독과 이야기를 나누다 보면 베트남에 들어올 때 안락한 미국생활을 청산하고 베트남에 들어온 선택에 대해 여러번 후회하는 순간도 있었다고 한다. 한국에서 화려했던 경력의 아마추어 지도자 생활을 뒤로하고 선택한 미국행. 그리고 다시 미국에서 야구를 가르치며 뭔가 2% 부족했던 갈증을 느끼던 그의 앞에 나타난 새로운 도전. 베트남 야구를 떨쳐버릴 수 없었다는 그의 말처럼 물질적인 것을 쫓아갔더라면 절대 베트남에 들어오지도 않았고 시작도 하지 않았다는 것이다.

베트남 야구의 발전 방향은 많은 것을 고려해야 한다. 오직 국가대표 선수들을 양성해서 국제대회의 성적만을 생각한다면 베트남 야구는 ‘빛 좋은 개살구’가 될 것이다. 베트남 야구는 학교(뿌리), 사회(줄기), 국가대표(열매)를 골고루 발전시켜야 한다. 학교체육에 야구를 정식 종목으로 채택해서 야구를 지도하고, 야구부를 창단하거나 동아리 활동을 활성화시켜야 한다.

이후 학교를 졸업한 선수들로 구성된 사회인 야구가 한국처럼 활성화되고 각종 대회가 개최되어야 한다. 이후 이러한 선수 중에서 탁월한 재능을 가진 선수들이 국가대표가 되는 선순환의 시스템을 갖추어야 한다. 박효철 감독의 생각은 베트남 국가대표를 통한 성적을 올리는 것이 목표가 아니다. 베트남에서 야구가 활성화되어 많은 베트남 국민이 야구의 매력을 알아가는 것이 그의 최종 목표이다. 앞서 이야기한 시스템이 갖춰지면 국가대표팀의 국제대회 성적은 자연스럽게 만들어진다는 것이다. 나 또한 전적으로 동의한다.

박효철 감독의 성실함과 야구에 대한 열정, 그리고 베트남 학생들을 사랑하는 모습을 가장 가까이에서 지켜보고 있는 베트남 야구협회 스텝진들, 특히 베트남 야구협회 미스터 판 회장은 자기들보다 더 열심히 베트남 선수들을 지도하고 사랑하는 것에 탄복을 했다며 입에 침이 마를 정도로 칭찬하고 있다.

험난하고 힘든 상황에서도 늘 즐겁게 야구하려고 노력하는 박효철 감독을 보면 그가 얼마나 야구에 대한 열정이 많은 후배인지 알 수 있다. 그의 그런 열정이 없었더라면 이런 험난하고 힘든 베트남까지 내려와 야구를 가르치지 않았을 것이다.

앞에서도 잠시 이야기 했지만 베트남 야구는 아직 모든것들이 다 열악하고 환경이 좋지 않다. 박효철 감독이 베트남에서 어린선수들과 함께 야구를 가르치는 것을 보며 옛날 라오스에서 처음 선수들을 가르쳤던 것들이 오버랩 되면서 나의 마음이 먹먹해지는 것을 보게 될 때가 한두번이 아니다.

박효철 감독과 함께 베트남 선수들을 가르치면서 이제 나도 모든 것들을 박효철 감독한테 다 일임하고 뒤에서 박효철 감독을 도와주어도 충분하겠다는 생각이 들었고 그의 성실함과 야구에 대한 열정으로 인해 머지 않아 베트남 야구가 아시아뿐만 아니라 세계를 놀라게 할 날도 멀지 않았음을 곧 보게 될 것이다.

시작은 미약하였지만 나중은 심히 창대해질 베트남 야구를 응원한다. 또한 박효철 감독의 수고가 아름다운 결실을 맺을 그 날을 기대하며 마음다해 기도한다.

It has already been four years since Coach Park Hyo-chul entered Hanoi, Vietnam. What I still can't forget is the first training session on June 4, 2022. The temperature hit 37 degrees Celsius, the highest in the year. In early June, 37 degrees Celsius is a hot weather with sweaty eyes even when standing still. On top of that, people can feel more than 45 degrees Celsius...

Vietnam is a country famous for its humid weather like Korea. I could have endured it because I already had a lot of experience in Laos, but it must have been quite embarrassing for coach Park Hyo-chul, who was new to the team. Moreover, due to the hot weather with no wind and humid air, the uniforms are already wet with sweat within minutes.

These Vietnamese players are already familiar with the heat, but they also drink water and seek shade every break, perhaps because they couldn't stand the humid heat. Coach Park Hyo-chul, who stopped his long life in the U.S. and came to Vietnam to adapt to unfamiliar conditions, made me think that he is a true baseball player. I honestly can't believe that it's already been four years since he started like that.

During the past four years, Park Hyo-cheol said that there were times when he came to Vietnam, he regretted his decision several times after ending his comfortable life in the U.S. He chose to go to the U.S., leaving behind his splendid career as an amateur leader in Korea. Then again, while teaching baseball in the U.S., he felt a thirst that lacked 2 percent. As he said, "I could not shake off Vietnamese baseball," he never entered Vietnam and never started it if he had pursued something material.

The direction of development of Vietnamese baseball has to be considered a lot. If only national team players are trained and the performance of international competitions is considered, Vietnamese baseball will be a 'bright and wide apricot'. Vietnamese baseball should develop schools (root), society (stem), and national teams (fruit) evenly. Baseball should be adopted as an official sport in school sports to guide baseball, establish a baseball team, or revitalize club activities.

After that, social baseball, composed of players who have graduated from school, should be activated like Korea and various competitions should be held. After that, among these players, there should be a virtuous cycle system in which players with outstanding talents become national teams. Coach Park Hyo-chul's idea is not to improve his performance through the Vietnamese national team. His ultimate goal is to promote baseball in Vietnam and let many Vietnamese people know the charm of baseball. If the system mentioned earlier is in place, the national team's performance in international competitions will be made naturally. I also completely agree.

The Vietnamese Baseball Association staff, especially Mr. Pan, who are watching Park Hyo-chul's sincerity, passion for baseball, and love for Vietnamese students most closely, praise him as mouth-watering, saying that he admired his leadership and love of Vietnamese players harder than they did.

Coach Park Hyo-chul, who always tries to enjoy baseball even in tough and difficult situations, shows how passionate he is about baseball. Without his passion, he would not have come down to Vietnam and taught baseball.

As I mentioned earlier, everything in Vietnamese baseball is still poor and the environment is not good. More than once, watching coach Park Hyo-chul teach baseball with young players in Vietnam, I see my heart go down as the things that first taught players in Laos overlap.

As I taught Vietnamese players with Park Hyo-chul, I thought it would be enough to leave everything to Park Hyo-chul and help him from behind, and I will soon see that Vietnamese baseball will surprise not only Asia but also the world due to his sincerity and passion for baseball.

Although the start was weak, I support Vietnamese baseball, which will be great later. I also pray with all my heart, looking forward to the day when manager Park Hyo-chul's hard work will bear beautiful fruits.
