오늘은 해태 타이거즈 원년 멤버이자 선수인 김봉연 선배에 대해 몇자 적어본다. 지난번 '100호 홈런 경쟁자인 김봉연 선수'에 대한 글을 썼다. 김봉연 선배와의 인연은 일반 사람들이 생각하는 것보다 많은 편이다. 특히 김봉연 선배는 호인이라 철부지 없었던 어린 나를 대인배처럼 품어주고 받아준 따뜻한 선배다.

우리나라프로야구의 일등공신인 김봉연 선배와의 100호 홈런 경쟁은 세월이 많이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 여전히 그 감동은 사라지지 않고 있다. 김봉연 선배와 나는 홈런의 호적수였지만, 평소엔 경쟁 관계라기보다는 매우 가까운 사이였다. 지난번에도 언급했지만 김봉연 선배의 손위 동서가 우리나라 최초 권투 세계챔피언 김기수 형님이다. 거기에 비해 나의 동서는 첫번째 형님이다. 딸 여섯에 와이프는 막내다. 형님과 김기수 형님과는 어릴 때부터 이북에서 친구 사이였다. 두분 다 함경북도 북청 출신으로 한국전쟁 1‧4후퇴 당시 피란을 와서 남한에 정착해 살았다. 그러다 보니 김봉연 선배와 나는 동서를 매개로 가족끼리도 자주 만났다.

이러듯 그라운드 밖에선 서로 좋은 사이였지만, 그래도 그라운드 안에서는 보이지 않는 경쟁 관계. 특히 홈런에 관한 한 자존심이 강한 김봉연 선배와 나는 100호 홈런 만큼은 절대 양보할 수 없는 사이다.

이런 치열한 100호 홈런 경쟁에서 해태 타이거즈 팀과의 경기가 있을 때는 더 쉴세 없이 나의 모터는 돌아간다. 김봉연 선배가 타석에 들어서면 타격이 끝날 때까지 쉬지 않고 떠들어 된다.

김봉연 선배와는 여러가지로 친분이 있는 대 선배라 타석에 들어서면 다른 어느 선배들보다 더 재미있고 많은 이야기를 한다.

김봉연 선배가 타석에 들어서자마자 곧바로 “형님, 삼성만 만나면 왜 그렇게 잘 치십니까. 어디로 뭘 던져야 못 칩니까?” 이렇게 이야기 하면 선배님은 “만수 너 조용히 안 하냐. 시끄럽다.”

한게임 최소 4타석 들어올 때마다 나는 쉼 없이 떠들어 된다. 그럴 때마다 김봉연 선배는 대꾸하지 않으려 했지만, 가끔씩은 선배님도 참지 못해 화를 내면서 심판한테 재재를 부탁한다. 그러면 나는 더 신이나서 “형님, 앞 타석에 못 치셨네요. 죄송했습니다. 이제 좋은 볼 하나 드리겠습니다.”

지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 내가 쉴 새 없이 ‘트래쉬 토크(Trash-talk) (상대의 심리를 흔들거나 자극하기 위해 떠드는 말)’는 계속됐다. 급기야 김봉연 선배는 스윙 폼을 가다듬는 척하다 슬그머니 방망이 끝으로 나의 포수 헬멧을 툭 친다. 능글스러운 나는 아랑곳하지 않고 또 떠들었다. “형님, 마음 푸세요. 이번엔 그냥 한가운데 하나 드릴게요. 홈런 하나 치시고 시원하게 한잔하러 가셔야죠.” 참다못한 선배님은 주심에게 하소연을 했다. “너무 시끄러워서 집중이 안 됩니다. 이만수 좀 그만 떠들라고 해주세요.”

많은 세월이 흘러 이제는 서로 웃으면서 이야기 하지만 솔직히 김봉연 선배가 타석에 들어오면 다른 어느 선배보다 재미있고 더 만히 떠들었다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 김봉연 선배는 호인이라 노골적으로 화를 내거나 야단치지 않는다.

김봉연 선배는 연세대 시절까지 검정 고무신에 작업복을 입고 다녀 ‘촌놈’이라는 별명이 붙었다고 한다. 선배님은 어린시절부터 운동에 대해서 만큼은 남들이 따라올 수 없을 정도로 뛰어나고 힘이 장사였다고 한다. 선배님이 야구를 시작하고부터 일찌감치 투타에서 두각을 나타냈고, 1972년 황금사자기에서 대역전 드라마를 펼치며 우승해 ‘역전의 명수’ 군산상고 신화를 탄생시키자 최고의 인기스타가 되어 연세대학교로 진학하게 되었다.

대학시절의 화려함은 이미 야구 바닥에서 널리 알려진 선수였기에 일찌감치 국가대표로 발탁이 되었다. 김봉연 선배는 대학시절까지 투수 겸 4번타자 였을 정도로 뛰어난 타격과 투수였다. 거기다가 더 놀라운 사실은 그 큰 덩치에도 불구하고 빠른 발로 인해 대학시절 김재박 선배와 도루 랭킹 1, 2위를 다툴 정도였다고 하니.....

김봉연 선배가 야구하던 시절에는 대학 입학보다는 실업팀에 들어가는 것이 더 유행하던 시절이다. 군산상고를 졸업하고 곧바로 안정된 실업팀에 입단하지 않고 선배님은 어린시절부터 늘 꿈꾸어 왔던 교사가 꿈이었다고 한다. 어린시절부터 교사의 꿈이 있어 학창시절에 경기가 없는 날은 영어와 한문 공부에 몰두 했다고 한다. 그래서 김봉연 선배는 안정된 실업팀에 들어가지 않고 연세대 체육교육과에 입학하게 되었다고 한다.

김봉연 선배와 김기수 형님 나와 큰 형님과 경기가 없는 날이면 자주 만나 식사를 하며 많은 이야기 나눌 때가 있다. 그럴 때마다 내가 깜짝 놀라는 것은 선배님의 해박한 지식과 이야기에 여러번 놀랄 때가 있다. 특히 선배님의 한자 실력은 입이 다물어지지 않을 정도로 대단했다. 그 단적인 것이 붓글씨로 한자를 쓰는데 서예가 빰 때릴 정도로 명필이다.

김봉연선배가 해태 코치 시절이던 1999년 말 기대했던 해태 감독이 되지 못하자 선배님의 표현대로 피눈물을 흘리며 야구계를 떠났고, 극동대 사회체육학과 교수가 되었다. 나 또한 1998년 삼성라이온즈 선수생활을 모두 청산하고 홀로 선진야구를 배우기 위해 미국으로 떠났다.

이렇게 서로 각자의 길을 걷다보니 선배님과 만날 기회가 20년 넘도록 없었다. 물론 현장을 떠난 김봉연선배를 가끔 언론으로 통해 근황을 접할 수 있었다. 현장을 떠난 선배님의 제 2의 인생을 보면서 어느 누구보다 멋진 인생을 잘 살아가고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

선배님도 현장을 떠난지 어느덧 20년이 훌쩍 넘었지만 여전히 야구에 대한 애착심은 남다름을 알 수 있었다. 지금도 교수생활을 끝내고 시간이 있을 때마다 강연과 어린아이들과 함께 야구를 한다고 한다.

야구인 후배로서 선배님이 얼마나 위대하고 대단하신 분이라는 것을 다시 한번 보게 되었다. 지금도 칠순이 넘은 나이에도 여전히 중소기업의 고문으로 일을 하고 있다. 또한 선배님이 정한 루틴을 현장을 떠난 지금까지 형수님과 함께 하루도 어기지 않고 지켜가며 실천하고 있다고 하니...

늘 운동선수들의 본이 되는 선배님을 보며 나 또한 최선을 다해 나의 길을 걸어가려고 한다.

Today, I will write down a few words about Kim Bong-yeon, a member and player of the Haitai Tigers. Last time, he wrote an article about Kim Bong-yeon, who is a contender for his 100th home run. He has more relationships with Kim than ordinary people think. In particular, Kim Bong-yeon is a warm senior who embraced and accepted me as a great person and was immature.

Even though many years have passed, the 100th home run competition with Kim Bong-yeon, the top contributor in Korean professional baseball, still remains impressive. Kim Bong-yeon and I were rivals for home runs, but we were usually very close rather than competing. As I mentioned last time, Kim Bong-yeon's Sonwi East-West is Korea's first world boxing champion Kim Ki-soo. By comparison, my East-West is my first brother. My six daughters and my wife are the youngest. My elder brother and Kim Ki-soo have been friends in the North since childhood. Both of them are from Bukcheong, North Hamgyeong Province, and they came to refuge during the first and fourth retreats of the Korean War and lived in South Korea. As a result, Kim Bong-yeon and I often met with family members through East and West.

We were on good terms outside the ground, but we are still in a competitive relationship that is not seen inside the ground. Especially when it comes to home runs, Kim Bong-yeon and I, who have strong self-esteem, cannot yield as much as our 100th home run.

When there is a game against the Haitai Tigers team in this fierce competition for the 100th home run, my motor turns more constantly. When Kim Bong-yeon enters the batter's box, he makes a non-stop noise until the hit is over.

He is a senior who is close to Kim Bong-yeon in many ways, so when he enters the batter's box, he talks more and is more fun than any other senior.

As soon as Kim Bong-yeon entered the batter's box, he said, "Why are you so good when you meet Samsung? Where should I throw something?" and he said, "Mansu, why aren't you quiet? It's noisy."

Whenever I have at least four at-bats in a game, I endlessly talk. Whenever that happens, Kim Bong-yeon won't respond, but sometimes he gets angry and asks the referee to do it again. Then I get more excited and say, "Hey, you didn't hit the previous batter's box. I'm sorry. I'll give you a good ball now."

I still can't forget it. I kept saying "Trash-talk" without a break. Finally, Kim Bong-yeon pretends to adjust his swing form and gently pats me on the catcher's helmet with the tip of his bat. The slick me again and again. "Brother, relax. I'll just give you one in the middle. You have to hit a home run and go have a cool drink." The senior complained to the referee. "I can't concentrate because it's too loud. Please stop talking."

Many years later, we laugh and talk to each other, but honestly, when Kim Bong-yeon came to the batter's box, he was more fun and talked more freely than any other senior. As mentioned earlier, Kim Bong-yeon is a good man, so he doesn't openly get angry or scold him.

Kim Bong-yeon is said to have been nicknamed "the village boy" because he wore black rubber shoes and work clothes until his days at Yonsei University. The senior was said to have been so excellent in sports that no one else could match him since childhood. When he started playing baseball, he distinguished himself in pitching early on, and won the Golden Lion in 1972 with a drama that turned the tables, creating the Gunsan Sango myth, a "master of reversal," he became the most popular star and went to Yonsei University.

Since he was already well known in baseball, he was selected as a member of the national team early on. Kim Bong-yeon was an outstanding batting and pitcher who was also a cleanup hitter until college. What's more surprising is that despite his huge size, he was able to compete with Kim Jae-bak for the first and second place in stolen bases during his college years...

When Kim Bong-yeon was playing baseball, it was more popular to join the business team than to enter college. After graduating from Gunsan High School, he did not join the stable business team immediately, and he said that his dream was to become a teacher he had always dreamed of since childhood. Since he had dreamed of becoming a teacher since childhood, he was said to have been immersed in studying English and Chinese on days when there was no game in school. Therefore, it is said that Kim Bong-yeon entered Yonsei University's Sports Education Department without joining the stable business team.

When there is no game with Kim Bong-yeon, Kim Ki-soo, and my eldest brother, we often meet and talk a lot. Whenever that happens, what surprises me is that I am often surprised by my senior's extensive knowledge and stories. In particular, the senior's Chinese character skills were so great that I couldn't keep my mouth shut. The obvious thing is that he writes Chinese characters in calligraphy in calligraphy, and he is a masterpiece.

When Kim Bong-yeon failed to become Haitai manager in late 1999, when he was coaching Haitai, he left the baseball world in blood tears and became a professor of social sports at Far East University. I also left for the U.S. in 1998 to learn advanced baseball alone after completing my entire career as a Samsung Lions player.

Walking on their own paths like this, there has been no opportunity to meet with their seniors for more than 20 years. Of course, I was able to get an update on Kim Bong-yeon, who left the scene, through the media from time to time. Looking at the second life of the senior who left the scene, I could see that he was living a better life than anyone else.

It has already been over 20 years since the senior left the scene, but his attachment to baseball is still different. Even now, he is said to give lectures and play baseball with young children whenever he has time after finishing his teaching career.

As a junior baseball player, I saw once again how great and great you are. Even now, he is still working as an advisor to a small and medium-sized company even after he is over 70. Also, until now, when he left the scene, he and his sister-in-law have been practicing the routine he set without breaking a day...

I always look at my seniors who are the models of athletes and I also try my best to walk my way.
