< 야구를 사랑한 친구, 박영진 감독의 이야기 >

지난 4월 27일, 대구 달서구에 있는 구지장로교회에서 저녁 간증을 하러 가기 전, 오랜 친구 박영진 감독을 만났다. 신경식 친구가 그를 데리고 교회까지 찾아온 것이다. 어떻게 이 먼 곳까지 찾아왔나 싶어 놀라웠고, 또 반가웠다. 짧은 만남이었지만 오랜만에 얼굴을 마주한 우리는, 잠시나마 옛 추억과 삶의 이야기를 나누며 마음 따뜻한 시간을 보냈다. 간증이 끝난 뒤, 친구의 눈가에 맺힌 눈물을 보며 하나님께서 그의 마음을 두드리셨음을 느꼈다.

박영진 감독은 내가 가장 오래 알고 지낸 친구 중 한 명이다. 대구상고 3학년 시절, 1977년 '제32회 청룡기 전국고교야구대회'에서 우리 팀이 우승했을 때, 모든 경기를 혼자 책임지며 최우수 투수상을 받은 주인공이 바로 그였다. 이후 대학을 졸업하고 1982년 프로야구가 출범하면서, 삼성라이온즈에서 다시 함께 투수와 포수로 뛰었고, 그는 곧 삼성 프런트로 옮겨 매니저직을 맡으며 행정 경험도 쌓았다.

현장과 프런트를 두루 경험한 그는 자연스럽게 모교인 대구상원고의 감독직을 맡아 16년간 지도자로 활약했다. 전국대회 우승을 이끌며 아마야구의 명장으로 불렸고, 한동안 야구계를 떠나 가족과 조용한 시간을 보내다가, 2023년 겨울 구미대학교의 감독 제안을 받고 7년 만에 현장에 복귀했다.

다시 시작하는 일이 말처럼 쉽지 않다는 걸 나도 잘 안다. 그는 직접 선수들을 차에 태워 구미에서 대구 훈련장까지 데려다 주고, 훈련이 끝나면 다시 숙소로 데려오는 일을 1년 넘게 반복했다. 또한, 부족한 인프라를 보완하기 위해 학교와 끊임없이 대화했고, 선수들이 등록금 걱정 없이 야구에 집중할 수 있도록 다양한 장학 제도를 마련했다.

무엇보다 인상 깊었던 건, 박 감독이 학교에 제안한 조건이었다. 본인의 월급은 받지 않아도 좋으니, 그 예산으로 선수들에게 더 많은 혜택을 주어 달라고 한 것이다. 그는 지방대의 열악한 현실을 누구보다 잘 알았기에, 젊은 유망주들이 돈 걱정 없이 운동에만 집중할 수 있는 환경을 만드는 데 온 마음을 쏟았다.

그 결과, 대학 1학년 위주로 구성된 구미대 야구팀은 작년 U리그에서 5승 1무 11패라는 값진 성과를 올렸다. 창단 이후 처음 있는 일이다. 수치보다 더 중요한 건, 이 팀이 아무도 주목하지 않던 자리에서 가능성을 증명해냈다는 사실이다.

박영진 감독은 “지방대라고 해서 포기하지 말고, 야구에 대한 꿈을 끝까지 붙들었으면 좋겠다”고 자주 말한다. 그는 지금도 선수들을 위해 뛰고 있고, 친구의 말처럼, 고등학교에서 대학 진학의 문턱을 넘지 못한 선수들이 구미대학교에서 다시 한번 기회를 얻기를 진심으로 바라고 있다.

선수들의 미래를 위한 이 친구의 걸음은 오늘도 계속되고 있다. 그 진심 어린 발걸음이 어디까지 닿을지는 아무도 모르지만, 나는 야구를 사랑한 그의 땀과 헌신은 반드시 누군가의 인생을 바꿔 놓을 것이라 믿는다.


                                                          <The story of Park Young-jin, a friend who loved baseball>

On April 27, before going to Guji Jangro Church in Dalseo-gu, Daegu for dinner, I met an old friend, director Park Young-jin. A friend of Shin Kyung-sik took him to the church. It was amazing and nice to see how he came all the way here. It was a short meeting, but we spent a warm time talking about old memories and life for a while. After the testimony was over, I felt that God tapped his heart when I saw the tears around my friend's eyes.

Coach Park Young-jin is one of the friends I have known for the longest time. When my team won the 32nd Blue Dragon Open National High School Baseball Competition in 1977 when I was a senior at Daegu Sang High School, he was the one who received the Best Pitcher Award by taking charge of all games alone. After graduating from college, he played as pitcher and catcher again for the Samsung Lions when professional baseball was launched in 1982. He soon moved to Samsung's front desk and gained administrative experience by taking over as a manager.

Having experienced both the field and the front desk, he naturally served as the director of his alma mater, Daegu Sangwon, and served as a leader for 16 years. He was called the master of baseball by leading the national championship, and after a while away from the baseball world and spending quiet time with his family, he returned to the field after seven years after receiving a manager's proposal from Gumi University in the winter of 2023.

I know that starting over is not as easy as it sounds. For more than a year, he repeatedly drove the players from Gumi to Daegu training site and brought them back to their accommodation after training. In addition, he constantly talked with the school to make up for the lack of infrastructure, and various scholarship systems were established so that players could focus on baseball without worrying about tuition fees.

What impressed me most was the conditions that coach Park suggested to the school. He asked for more benefits for the players with that budget because he did not have to pay his own salary. Knowing the poor reality of provincial universities better than anyone else, he devoted all his heart to creating an environment where young prospects can focus only on exercise without worrying about money.

As a result, the Gumi University baseball team, which mainly consisted of freshmen, achieved a valuable accomplishment with five wins, one draw, and 11 losses in the U-League last year. It was the first time since its foundation. More important than the figures, this team proved the possibility in a place where no one was paying attention.

Coach Park Young-jin often says, "Don't give up just because it's a provincial university, and I hope you will stick to your dream of baseball to the end." He still plays for players, and as his friend said, he sincerely hopes that players who did not pass the threshold of college entrance in high school will get another chance at Gumi University.

This friend's steps toward the future of the players continue today. Nobody knows how far those sincere steps will reach, but I believe that his sweat and dedication to baseball will surely change someone's life.
