< 속도 보다는 방향 >

인도네시아 야구는 라오스나 베트남 보다 훨씬 오래전에 야구를 시작한 나라다. 어제(6일) 늦은 저녁시간에 인도네시아 국제공항에 도착했다. 공항에 이창균 단장과 인도네시아 야구협회 우그라세나 와 협회 사람이 마중 나와 주었다. 공항에서 호텔까지 이창균 단장이 나와 권혁돈 감독을 의전해 주었다.

호텔까지 오면서 이창균 단장이 깜짝 놀라는 이야기를 한다. 초등학교부터 시작해 대학까지 야구하는 팀이 무려 350개나 된다고 한다. 그리고 더 놀라운 사실은 지방마다 스탠드가 있는 멋진 야구장이 대부분 다 있다고 한다.

그리고 우리가 묵고 있는 호텔에서 야구장까지 걸어서 10분 밖에 걸리지 않는다고 한다. '2018년 자카르타 아시안게임'이 호텔에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있다. 자카르타 도시에 야구장만 3개가 있을 정도로 화려하고 멋지다고 한다.

인도네시아는 오래전부터 야구를 시작했지만 이제는 예전의 화려했던 야구는 이들 자국민들에게 사라진지 오래다. 이제 이들도 다시 하나부터 시작해야 한다. 처음부터 다시 시작한다는 자세로 달려가다보면 시행착오를 수도 없이 겪으면서 진행해야 한다. 지난 10년이 넘는 바탕을 지반으로 삼아 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아에서의 소중한 경험을 인도네시아에서의 활동에 어느 정도 자신감을 가지면서 시작하려고 한다. 물론 모든것들이 순조롭게 잘 진행되지 않는다는 것을 명심하고 지금부터 하나씩 해 나가려고 한다.

앞에서도 언급했지만 인도네시아가 예전의 화려함을 다 잊고 지금부터 하나씩 해 나간다면 멀지 않아 인도네시아의 옛 명성을 되 찾을 날이 오리라 믿는다. 이들도 예전에는 ‘야구’라는 단어 자체가 존재하지도 않았고 야구를 아는 사람이 전혀 없는 척박한 나라였다. 그랬던 인도네시아 가 유소년부터 시작해 젊은 층까지 점점 주목을 받으면서 야구에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 있단다.

특히 인도네시아는 소프트볼하는 여자선수들도 많다고 한다. 야간마다 소프트볼 구장에서 팀별로 경기하는 여자선수들이 생각보다 많다고 한다. 여성들이 소프트볼 하다보니 자연스럽게 어린 청소년들이 야구를 시작하게 되었고 재미있어 한다며 그 숫자가 날이 갈수록 점점 많아지고 있다.

이미 인도네시아 큰 도시에 야구를 잘 알고 있는 팀과 선수가 있다는 것은 여러모로 큰 장점이 될 수 있다. 인도네시아 야구는 그저 야구가 좋아서 유소년부터 시작해 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교, 사회인 팀에서 야구를 즐기는 동아리 수준에 멈춰서는 안 된다. 즉, 이제부터는 동네 야구에서 벗어나야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 지금부터 모두가 뼈를 깎는 자세로 시작해야 한다.

이제 인도네시아는 국가대표 선수들을 모집해서 국제대회에 참가해 많은 다른 나라들과 경쟁을 시작해야 한다. 물론 이제 갓 알을 깨고 새로운 세계를 접하는 인도네시아 야구지만 앞에서 이야기 했듯이 인도네시아는 라오스나 베트남 그리고 캄보디아 보다 훨씬 앞서서 야구를 시작했기에 멀지 않아 야구의 종주국이 될 수 있는 충분한 자원을 갖추고 있는 나라다.

그러기 위해서는 지금부터 하나씩 유소년부터 시작해 성인까지 올바른 방향으로 달려갈 수 있도록 모두가 노력해야 한다. 당장 무언가를 이루기 위해 달려가는 것이 아니라 먼 미래를 위해 달려가야 한다.

Indonesia started playing baseball for a long time, but now the glamorous baseball of the past has long disappeared to its people. Now they have to start over again. If you run with a posture of starting from the beginning, you have to proceed through countless trials and errors. Based on the background of more than 10 years, I would like to start my valuable experiences in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia with some confidence in my activities in Indonesia. Of course, I will keep in mind that everything is not going smoothly and do it one by one from now on.

As mentioned earlier, I believe that if Indonesia forgets all the splendor of the past and goes one by one from now on, it will not be long before it will find Indonesia's old reputation. In the past, they were also a barren country where the word "baseball" did not exist and no one knew baseball at all. As Indonesia, which started with youth and young people, is receiving more and more attention, they are very interested in baseball.

In particular, Indonesia is said to have many female players who play softball. There are more female players than expected who play in teams at softball stadiums every night. As women play softball, young teenagers naturally start playing baseball and the number is increasing day by day.

Having teams and players who are already familiar with baseball in large Indonesian cities can be a great advantage in many ways. Indonesian baseball shouldn't stop at the level of a club that just loves baseball and enjoys baseball in middle school, high school, university, and working teams. In other words, from now on, we have to get out of the local baseball. To do that, everyone should start in a bone-cutting position.

Now Indonesia has to recruit national team players to participate in international competitions and start competing with many other countries. Of course, Indonesian baseball is just breaking its eggs and encountering a new world, but as I mentioned earlier, Indonesia is a country with enough resources to become a dominant country in the near future because it started playing baseball far ahead of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

To do this, everyone should make efforts to run in the right direction, starting with youth one by one from now on, to adults. You don't run to achieve something right away, but you have to run for the distant future.
