< 후배들이 전한, 야구보다 더 큰 울림 >

오늘은 내가 아끼는, 그리고 누구보다 자랑스러운 후배들 이야기를 하려 한다. 이번 인도네시아 ‘유소년 야구 아카데미’에 함께할 인원을 찾던 중, 헐크파운데이션 최홍준 부장이 나용훈, 김세훈, 김대륙 세 후배에게 참여할 수 있겠느냐고 물었다. 그런데 세 사람 모두 주저하지 않고, “무슨 일이 있어도 꼭 가겠습니다”라고 답했다. 바쁜 일상과 스케줄 속에서도 모든 걸 제쳐두고 참여하겠다는 이들의 결정에, 선배로서 가슴이 찡했다.

셋은 아직 젊다. 내 아들보다도 어린, 풋풋한 나이의 후배들이지만 그 열정과 책임감 만큼은 누구보다 깊고 단단하다. 게다가 이번 활동이 가벼운 자리가 아님을 누구보다 잘 알고 있었을 텐데도, 오히려 기쁜 마음으로 함께하겠다고 나서주는 모습에서 이들이 왜 특별한지를 다시 한 번 느낀다.

나용훈은 동의대를 졸업하고 한화 이글스에서 선수 생활을 했다. 현재는 ‘H.P 베이스볼 야구아카데미’의 대표로 활동하며 후배 양성에 힘쓰고 있다. 김세훈은 한양대를 나와 고양원더스 독립야구단에서 뛰었고, 지금은 고양시 야구소프트볼협회장으로 지역 야구 저변 확대에 앞장서고 있다. 김대륙은 동아대를 졸업한 뒤 롯데 자이언츠에서 선수로 뛰었으며, 지금은 같은 구단에서 유소년 티볼과 야구 아카데미를 책임지고 있다. 세 사람 모두 각자의 자리에서 이미 묵직한 책임을 지고 있는 지도자들이다.

그런데도 열흘이라는 소중한 시간을 내어 “이만수 감독님과 함께 꼭 좋은 일에 동참하고 싶다”며 먼저 마음을 내어준 것. 얼마나 고맙고 기특한지 모른다. 이들은 모두 각자 맡고 있는 역할이 있음에도 불구하고, 오히려 자신들의 시간을 쪼개어 인도네시아 유소년들을 위해 발 벗고 나섰다. 야구인으로서, 그리고 인생 선배로서 너무나 큰 감동을 받았다.

이번 아카데미에서 이들이 맡을 포지션도 다양하다. 나용훈은 외야수 출신, 김세훈은 3루수와 1루수, 김대륙은 내야 전 포지션과 함께 이번엔 투수 코칭도 맡기로 했다. 정작 가장 중요한 포수는 맡을 사람이 없어, 예전처럼 내가 직접 책임지기로 했다. 예전만큼 날렵하게 움직일 수는 없지만, 블로킹 하나만큼은 여전히 몸으로 보여줄 수 있어 다행이다.

이들 세 사람은 선수 시절부터 성실함과 올곧은 태도로 주변의 귀감이 됐고, 지도자가 된 지금도 그 마음가짐엔 한 치의 흐트러짐이 없다. 솔직히 이런 자리는 적당히 해도 누가 뭐라 하진 않는다. 하지만 이들은 절대 그런 법이 없다. 인도네시아에 오기 전부터 훈련 계획을 직접 노트에 빼곡하게 적어왔고, 현지에 도착한 지금도 매일 아침 셋이서 모여 어제 부족했던 점을 돌아보고, 그날의 지도를 어떻게 준비할지 치열하게 고민하고 있다.

이야기를 나눠보니, 이들이 야구를 통해 진심으로 바라는 건 단 하나였다. “야구를 통해 아이들이 더 행복해졌으면 좋겠다.” 그 마음이 참 깊었다. 재미있어야 흥미로 이어지고, 흥미가 있어야 더 많은 아이들이 그라운드로 달려나올 수 있다며, 어떻게든 인도네시아 유소년들에게 야구의 즐거움을 전하고 싶다고 했다. 이건 단순한 ‘기술 전수’가 아니라, 야구라는 스포츠를 통해 삶의 활력을 전하겠다는 마음이었다.

우리나라 야구계엔 훌륭한 지도자들이 많다. 하지만 이들처럼 심지가 곧고, 사명감 하나로 묵묵히 걸어가는 젊은 지도자를 만나긴 쉽지 않다. 이들이 흔들림 없이 중심을 지켜가며 성장할 수 있도록 곁에서 도와주는 것, 그게 지금의 내가 해야 할 일이라고 믿는다.

후배라는 말이 때로는 가볍게 느껴질 수도 있다. 하지만 이 세 사람은 내게 있어 단순한 후배가 아닌, 정말 본받을 점이 많은 동료이자 지도자다. 이들이 인도네시아에서 보여준 진심은, 언젠가 대한민국 유소년 야구를 넘어 동남아 전체에 선한 영향력으로 퍼질 거라 믿는다. 이들이야 말로 한국 야구의 뿌리가 되어줄 사람들이다. 앞으로도 이 멋진 후배들과 함께 야구를 통해 더 많은 웃음과 희망을 나눌 수 있기를 바란다.


  < Bigger sound than baseball, delivered by juniors>

Today, I'm going to talk about my favorite juniors and who I'm proud of more than anyone else. While looking for a member to join the Indonesian Youth Baseball Academy, Choi Hong-joon, head of the Hulk Foundation, asked three juniors, Na Yong-hoon, Kim Se-hoon, and Kim Dae-ryuk, if they could participate. But all three did not hesitate to say, "I'll go no matter what." Their decision to put everything aside and participate despite their busy daily lives and schedules touched my heart as a senior.

The three of them are still young. They are younger than my son, but their passion and responsibility are deeper and stronger than anyone else. Even though they must have known better than anyone else that this activity is not a light event, I feel once again why they are so special when they come forward to join me with joy.

After graduating from Dongui University, Na Yong-hoon played for the Hanwha Eagles. Currently, he is serving as the representative of the H.P. Baseball Academy and is striving to nurture junior players. Kim Sei-hoon graduated from Hanyang University and played for the Goyang Wonders Independent Baseball Team, and is now the president of the Goyang Baseball Softball Association, taking the lead in expanding the base of local baseball. After graduating from Dong-A University, Kim Dae-ryuk played for the Lotte Giants and is now in charge of youth T-ball and baseball academies for the same club. All three are leaders who already have heavy responsibilities in their respective positions.

Nevertheless, he took 10 precious days to give up his mind, saying, "I really want to participate in good things with coach Lee Man-soo." I am so grateful and proud of him. Despite their roles, they rather took their time to work hard for Indonesian youth. As baseball players and as senior players in their lives, I was deeply moved.

They will play various positions at the academy. Na Yong-hoon will play outfield, Kim Se-hoon will play third baseman and first baseman, and Kim Dae-ryuk will play all positions in the infield, as well as coaching pitchers. As there is no one to take charge of the most important catcher, I will take charge of it myself as before. I cannot move as fast as I used to, but I am glad that I can still display my blocking skills with my body.

These three have become paragonists around them with sincerity and upright attitude since their playing days, and even now, they have no disruption in their mindset. To be honest, no one says anything to me at such an event in moderation. However, they never do that. Even before coming to Indonesia, they had written down their training plans in their notebooks, and even now, the three of us gather every morning to look back on what we lacked in yesterday's performance, and agonize over how to prepare for the day's training.

Talking to each other, there was only one thing they really wanted through baseball. "I want children to be happier through baseball." It was very deep. He said that having fun leads to interest, and that more children can run to the ground only when there is interest, and that he wanted to somehow convey the joy of baseball to Indonesian youth. This was not just a 'technology transfer', but a desire to convey the vitality of life through a sport called baseball.

There are many great leaders in the Korean baseball community. However, it is not easy to meet a young leader who walks with a straight wick and a sense of duty like them. I believe that that is what I should do now to help them grow and maintain their balance.

The word junior can sometimes be taken lightly. However, these three people are not just juniors, but colleagues and leaders who have a lot to learn from. I believe that their sincerity in Indonesia will someday spread beyond Korea's youth baseball as a good influence throughout Southeast Asia. These are the people who will be the roots of Korean baseball. I hope that I will continue to share more laughter and hope through baseball with these wonderful juniors.
