81명이나 되는 유소년들과 오전과 오후로 나누어 연습하는데 화려한 유니폼이나 글러브 그리고 값진 알루미늄 배트와 멋진 스파이크를 신고 훈련하는데 정작 선수들이 가장 중요하게 생각해야 할 볼이 제대로 된 볼이 없다.

많은 선수들이 훈련하는데 고작 볼이 60개도 되지 않을 정도로 적다. 물론 어린선수들이라 타격할 때는 쉽게 구할 수 있는 테니스 볼로 타격연습한다. 문제는 어린선수들이 켓치볼 할 때 던지는 야구볼이다.

다 떨어진 볼이 아니면 너무 오래 사용해서 실밥도 제대로 갖추어지지 않은 볼이다. 또 문제는 비에 젖어 야구볼이 생각보다 조금씩 다 무거웠다. 비에 젖은 테니스 볼은 야구볼보다 가볍기 때문에 어린선수들이 사용해도 어깨에 무리를 주거나 지장을 주지 않지만 수비연습이나 송구할 때는 어린선수들에게 많은 부담을 주는 것이 사실이다. 아직 야구가 무엇이라는 것을 잘 모르는 인도네시아 어린선수들은 야구하는 것 자체로만 해도 너무 행복해 실밥이 터지거나 야구볼이 다 낡아도 상관하지 않고 신나게 잘 던지고 친다.

앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 문제는 물에 젖은 야구볼이다. 야구볼은 가죽으로 되어 있어 야구볼이 조금이라도 물에 젖게 되면 야구볼 속이 다 실로 되어 있기 때문에 미세할 정도로 무게가 더 나간다. 물에 젖은 야구볼을 햇빛으로 말린다고 하더라도 한번 젖은 가죽은 옛 것으로 되돌리기 쉽지 않다.

몇일 동안 인도네시아 유소년들과 함께 훈련하면서 유심히 이들을 지켜본 코치들 중에서 김세훈 코치 한양대를 나와 고양원더스 독립야구단에서 뛰었고, 지금은 고양시 야구소프트볼협회장으로 지역 야구 저변 확대에 앞장서고 있는 후배가 인도네시아 야구협회 '우그라세나'에게 깜짝 선물을 하고 싶다며 그를 부른다.

모든 스텝진들과 선수들이 있는 곳에서 김세훈 코치가 '인도네시아 야구협회에 야구볼 500개를 선물하겠다'며 이야기 한다. 여기 인도네시아는 유니폼도 자체에서 만들 수 있는 공장이 있다. 그리고 세계적인 글러브 회사인 'IKJ' 회사도 있다. 스파이크와 배트는 잘 모르겠다. 그런데 정작 야구선수들이 가장 많이 사용하는 야구볼은 이 나라에서는 만들지 않는다. 다른 어느것보다 야구볼은 소모품이기 때문에 가장 많이 있어야 하는 물품 중에 하나다. 그런데 이 나라에는 야구볼 만드는 공장도 없고 구하기도 어렵다고 한다.

이것을 들은 김세훈 코치가 '우그라세나'에게 깜짝 선물을 하겠다며 공약했다. '우그라세나'한테 '한국에 들어가면 곧바로 인도네시아로 야구볼을 보내주겠다'며 약속했다. 이것을 들은 인도네시아 야구협회 임원과 코치들이 고맙다며 인사하고 야단이 났다. 가장 행복해 하는 사람들은 인도네시아 야구국가대표 선수들이다.

이번에 야구인 후배들과 같이 '유소년 야구 아카데미'를 하며 많은 생각을 갖게 되었다. 야구인 선배로서 가장 행복한 순간이 지난번에 썼던 “이만수 감독님과 함께 꼭 좋은 일에 동참하고 싶다”며 먼저 마음을 내어준 것. 얼마나 고맙고 기특한지 모른다. 이들은 모두 각자 맡고 있는 역할이 있음에도 불구하고, 오히려 자신들의 시간을 쪼개어 인도네시아 유소년들을 위해 발 벗고 나섰다. 야구인으로서, 그리고 인생 선배로서 너무나 큰 감동을 받았다.

Young Indonesian players, who are not familiar with what baseball is, are so happy just by playing baseball that they throw balls excitedly regardless of whether the threads burst or the balls are old.

As mentioned earlier, the problem is a wet baseball. The baseball is made of leather, so if the ball is wet at all, the inside of the baseball is made of thread, so it weighs a little more. Even if a wet baseball is dried with sunlight, it is not easy to return the wet leather to the old one.

Among the coaches who watched them closely while training with Indonesian youth for a few days, Kim Se-hoon, coach Hanyang University, played for the Goyang Wonders Independent Baseball Team, and now the president of the Goyang Baseball Softball Association, who is leading the expansion of the local baseball base, calls him to give a surprise gift to the Indonesian Baseball Association "Ugrasena."

Where all the staff and players are, coach Kim Se-hoon says, "I will give 500 baseballs to the Indonesian Baseball Association." Here in Indonesia, there is a factory where you can make your own uniforms. And there is also a global glove company, the IKJ. I don't know about spikes and bats. However, baseballs that are used the most by baseball players are not made in this country. More than anything else, baseball is one of the most necessary items because it is a consumable product. However, it is said that there is no baseball factory in this country, and it is hard to get.

Coach Kim Se-hoon, who heard this, promised to give a surprise gift to the Indonesian baseball team. He also promised to send the baseball to Indonesia as soon as he gets back to Korea. The Indonesian baseball association executives and coaches said thank you to the team. The happiest people are the Indonesian baseball players.

This time, I had a lot of thoughts while playing the Youth Baseball Academy with my junior baseball players. The happiest moment as a baseball player was when he first gave up his mind, saying, "I really want to join the good things with coach Lee Man-soo," which he wrote last time. I don't know how grateful and proud I am. Although they all have their own roles, they rather took their time to work hard for Indonesian youth. I was so moved as a baseball player and as a senior in my life.
