< 자신의 심지를 갖고 굳건하게 살아가는 성준 후배를 응원한다 >

내가 야구인으로서 가장 아끼고 사랑하는 성준 후배랑 이야기 나누다보면 때론 내가 성준 후배로 인해 많이 배울 때가 있다. 나이가 들어서도 후배에게 배우고 새로운 정보를 듣게 되어 얼마나 기쁜지 모른다.

특히 성준 후배는 프로선수시절과 프로야구 지도자생활 그리고 지금은 어린 아마추어 선수들을 지도하고 있다. 프로선수시절이나 프로야구 지도자생활 할 때는 오로지 성적을 내기 위해 수단방법을 가리지 않았지만 어린선수들을 지도하면서 성적만을 위해 선수들을 지도했다가는 아무것도 이룰 수 없다는 것을 알고부터는 어린선수들을 지도할 때부터 이전에 갖고 있던 지도방식을 싹 잊어버리고 새롭게 어린선수들 눈높이에 맞추어 지도하게 되었단다.

성적을 내기 위해 어떻게 훈련 시키고 어떻게 선수들을 이끌어 가야 한다는 것을 프로야구생활을 오래 해 보았기 때문에 어느 누구보다도 잘 알고 있단다. 그러나 자라나는 어린선수들을 그렇게 했다가는 올바른 야구와 인성을 갖추기 보다는 이기는 기계로 만들 수 밖에 없다는 생각에 지도하는 방법들을 확 바꾸었다고 한다. 

물론 꾸준한 훈련과 좋은 방법들을 동원해 어린선수들을 가르쳐 주어 그들이 스스로 성장할 수 있도록 만들어 주는 것이 자기가 할 수 있는 최선의 길이란다. 공부하고, 연구하고, 노력하고, 생각하고 또 비록 어리지만 고민하며 연습하는 선수로 만드는 것이 성준 코치가 이들 어린선수들에게 가르쳐 주는 것이 최종 목표란다.

비록 성준 코치와 자주 만나지 못하지만 한번씩 만나면 자연스럽게 야구에 대해 이야기 나누는 것이 우리의 공통된 점이다.

아무리 많은 세월이 흐르고 나이가 70을 바라보는 선, 후배 사이지만 평생 한길로 달려온 우리들의 삶은 여전히 야구를 떠나서는 살 수 없는 인생이다. 나는 지금까지 달려오면서 수많은 추억들로 인해 나이가 들어서도 인생이 무력하다거나 허무하다는 생각이 별로 들지 않는다.

왜냐하면 나에게는 꿈이 있기 때문이다. 지금도 그 꿈을 위해 마지막 남은 체력을 다 소진하려고 한다. 성준 코치를 만나지 못하면 전화통화로 3 - 40분은 기본적으로 통화한다. 이날도 인천과 대구 사이지만 자연스럽게 야구에 대해 이야기를 주고 받았다. 성준 코치는 내가 여러번 강조하고 글로 썼지만 정말 요즈음 보기 드문 훌륭한 지도자이자 야구인이다.

지금도 성준 후배는 이야기 한다. 비록 환갑이 넘었지만 지금도 어린선수들과 같이 뛰고 던지고 소통 할 수 있어 너무 좋단다. 성준 후배와는 오랜 세월 함께 지낸 사이다 보니 우리는 서로 이 나이에도 현장에서 자라나는 후배들을 위해 우리들이 갖고 있는 노,하우들을 어린 청소년들에게 가르쳐 주고 전달할 수 있어 늘 감사하며 살아가고 있다며 이야기 한다.

지난번에도 언급한 바 있지만 세상은 하루가 다르게 변하고 있다. 나는 그 변화를 거부하지 않는다. 오히려 나도 새로움을 배우고 변화에 맞춰 살아가려 노력한다. 물론 옛것을 모두 버리자는 뜻은 아니다. 과거의 소중한 가치들을 간직하되, 현재와 미래를 수용하며 젊은 세대와 소통하는 것이야 말로 진정한 지혜라고 생각한다.

내가 전하는 이야기가 크든 작든 누군가의 삶에 작은 울림을 줄 수 있다면, 그것만으로도 보람을 느낀다. 이제는 내가 가진 경험을 나누며 배우는 기쁨을 더하는 것이 내 삶의 중심이다.

어린선수들과 함께 생활하면서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 부분이 '소통'이란다. 그리고 좀더 포괄적으로 이 문제를 보지 않으면 안 된다. 그리고 지도자인 성준 코치도 학생들을 위해 끊임 없이 공부한단다. 그래서 지금도 어린선수들의 눈 높이에 맞추어 선수들을 가르치고 있단다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 이들을 가르치면서 가장 중요한 것이 소통이란다. 어린선수들이 이해할 수 있도록 끊임없이 대화를 한단다.

이날도 성준 코치와 통화하면서 가장 많이 들은 이야기가 어린선수들과 끊임 없이 소통해야 하고 또 납득이 갈 수 있도록 서로 대화를 나누어야 한다고 한다. 그리고 어린선수들 눈 높이에 맞춰져야 선수들이 따라온다고 한다. 그래도 변함없는 것은 '지도자가 갖고 있어야 할 철학은 꼭 갖고 있어야 어린선수들을 가르칠 때 미래가 더 밝다'며 강하게 이야기한다.

말미에 성준 코치가 이런 이야기를 한다. '어린 선수들에게 창의력과 생각하게 하는 습관을 만들어 주는게 저의 미션입니다'라는 말에 역시 성준 후배 다운 이야기다.

이날 성준 코치와 통화하다보니 어느새 한시간이 훌쩍 지나갔다. 앞에서도 많이 이야기 했지만 이날도 후배로부터 또  많은 것을 배우는 시간이다.

평생 올바른 길과 성실하게 걸어온 성준후배의 앞날도 현역시절이나 지도자처럼 어떤 일을 하더라도 자신이 갖고 있는 심지를 갖고 굳건하게 살아가는 성준 후배를 응원한다...

When I talk to Sung-jun, who I cherish and love the most as a baseball player, sometimes I learn a lot because of Sung-jun. Even when I get older, I don't know how happy I am to learn from my juniors and hear new information.

Sung-joon, in particular, is coaching young amateur players during his professional career, professional baseball leadership, and now. When he was a professional player or a professional baseball leader, he did not do anything to achieve results, but he realized that he could not achieve anything only by coaching young players and guiding players only for their performance, so he forgot all of his previous teaching methods when coaching young players and taught them at the level of young players.

I know better than anyone else because I've been in professional baseball for a long time how to train and lead players in order to achieve results. However, it is said that he has drastically changed the teaching methods, thinking that young players who are growing up have no choice but to turn them into winning machines rather than having the right baseball and personality.

Of course, it is the best way to teach young players by using constant training and good methods to make them grow on their own. The ultimate goal is to teach these young players to study, study, try, think, and practice even though they are young.

Although we do not meet often with coach Sung-joon, it is our commonality to talk about baseball naturally when we meet once in a while.

No matter how many years have passed and how old they are and how young they are, but our lives, which have been running on the same path all their lives, are still life that we cannot live without baseball. I don't feel that my life is helpless or futile even when I get older due to so many memories I have been running so far.

Because I have a dream. Even now, I try to use up all my energy left for that dream. If I don't meet Coach Sung-jun, I basically talk on the phone for 3 to 40 minutes. Even on this day, I was between Incheon and Daegu, but naturally, we talked about baseball. Coach Sung-jun, who I have emphasized and written several times, is a great leader and baseball player that is rare these days.

Sung-jun still talks about this. Even though he is over 60 years old, he still enjoys playing, throwing and communicating with young players." Since we have been together with Sung-jun for a long time, we are always grateful to each other to teach and deliver our know-how to young people for those who are growing up in the field."

As I mentioned last time, the world is changing day by day. I do not reject that change. Rather, I try to learn newness and live according to change. Of course, it does not mean that we should abandon all the old things. I think it is true wisdom to preserve the precious values of the past, accept the present and the future, and communicate with the younger generation.

If the story I tell can give a small resonance to someone's life, whether it is big or small, that alone is rewarding. Now, sharing my experiences and adding the joy of learning is the center of my life.

While living with young players, the most important part is communication. We must look at this problem more comprehensively. And the leader, Sung Joon, also studies constantly for the students. That's why I still teach young players according to their eye level. As I mentioned earlier, the most important thing while teaching them is communication. We constantly communicate with young players so that they can understand.

On the same day, the most common story I heard on the phone with coach Sung-joon was that I should constantly communicate with young players and talk to each other so that I can understand it. And it is said that the players follow the young players only when they are at the eye level. Still, what remains unchanged is that the leader must have a philosophy that the future is brighter when teaching young players.

At the end, coach Sung-joon says this. "My mission is to make young players have a habit of creativity and thinking," he said, which is a story that Sung-joon is a junior.

An hour has already passed since I talked to coach Sung-joon on the phone. As I've talked a lot before, this day is also a time to learn a lot from my juniors.

The future of Sung Joon's junior, who has walked the right path and faithfully throughout his life, also supports Sung Joon's junior, who lives firmly with his own wick no matter what he does, like active-duty days or leaders...
