올해도 어김없이 <KBO 찾아가는 티볼교실>이 열렸다. 지난 4일 이른 아침 7시 20분부터 인천 신흥초등학교와 오후에는 인천 별빛초등학교를 시작으로 5일도 이른 아침시간부터 인천 검암초등학교와 오후에는 인천 해서초등학교를 찾아다니며 학생들과 함께 했다. 학생들이 이른 시간부터 운동장에 나와 공을 치고 달리며 환호성을 지르는 것을 보면서 , 앞으로도 티볼교실이 더 활성화 되어서 학생들이 운동장에서 마음껏 뛰놀 수 있도록 만들어주고 싶은 마음이다.

‘KBO 찾아가는 티볼교실’은 2016년부터 이어져온 학교체육과 유소년 야구 활성화 프로그램으로, 문화체육관광부와 국민체육진흥공단의 후원으로 진행되었다. 올해에도 전국 초등학교 190개교와 여자고등학교 10개교를 대상으로 진행되며 지난 9년간 전국 1000개 초등학교를 방문하여 티볼교실을 진행하였다. KBO는 재능기부위원과 사단법인 한국티볼연맹 티볼 지도자를 학교에 파견하여 교사와 학생들에게 초등 5학년 교과종목인 티볼을 교육하고 수업용 티볼용구를 지원하는 후원사업이다. 이 후원사업으로 초등학생들이 학교체육에서 티볼활동을 통해 야구와 친숙해지고 미래 야구의 저변 확대에 힘을 보태고 있다.

이날 신흥초등학교 <찾아가는 티볼교실> 수업이 오전 7시 20분부터에 시작됐음에도 어린학생들은 오전 7시전부터 자발적으로 등교해 수업을 준비하는 등 뜨거운 열기를 보며 야구인으로서 놀라지 않을 수가 없었다. 어린학생들은 이른 시간임에도 불구하고 밝은 표정으로 운동장에 나와 친구들과 함께 타격, 수비 연습을 통해 티볼의 기술을 익히고 이들과 함께 즐거운 2시간을 보냈다.

나는 어린학생들과 함께 하며 학생들에게 타격의 기본을 설명하고 직접 시범을 보이며 학생들의 눈높이에 맞춘 맞춤형 수업을 펼치려고 노력하고 있다. 일단 어린학생들과 함께 티볼교실 할 때는 무조건 학생들이 즐겁고, 재미있고, 행복해야 한다. 수업이 다 끝나면 학생들에게 일일이 사인 해주는 일도 잊지 않는다.

1998년 시작된 <KBO 찾아가는 티볼교실>은 처음에는 학교측이나 야구계 , 정부조차 별 관심이 없었다고 한다. 올해로 27년째 접어든 이 프로그램은 티볼을 알리는데 큰 공을 세웠다. 대한민국에 티볼이 들어오기까지 숨은 공로자인 박철호 전무이사는 지난 27년 동안 묵묵하게 티볼을 알리기 위해 대한민국 전국을 뛰어 다니며 티볼을 알렸다.

이제 티볼은 초등학교 5학년 교과서에 당당히 등재되어 정식수업에 들어가 있다. 이렇게 티볼이 자리잡기 까지는 <티볼연맹>의 박철호 전무이사의 노력과 수고가 컸다. 어린시절부터 자연스럽게 야구를 사랑하고 친해지도록 하기 위해서 위험하지도 않고 좁은 공간에서도 할 수 있는 티볼이 있다는 것을 알고 박철호 전무는 6년 동안의 일본 유학기간 동안 티볼에 대해 많은 공부를 했다.

그는 비 야구인이지만 야구인들보다 더 야구를 사랑하는 사람이다. 한국야구가 이 자리에 오기까지 밖으로 드러나지 않지만 야구발전의 밑거름이 되는 이런 숨은 공로자들 덕분에 한국프로야구가 작년에 이어 올해도 2년 연속 1000만명이라는 경이적인 기록을 돌파하는데 큰 몫을 했다고 자부할 수 있다. 박철호 전무이사가 동분서주하며 전국을 뛰어 다니는 모습을 보며 야구인의 한사람으로서 진심으로 감사한 마음이 크다.

나도 7년째 이 프로그램을 함께 하면서 야구나 티볼이 학교체육수업에 자연스럽게 녹아들면 좋겠다는 생각을 했다. 우리나라는 입시위주의 수업편성이라 학년이 올라 갈수록 체육시간이 줄어들고 있다. 미국의 경우를 보면 고등학교 졸업할 때까지 체육시간은 중요한 교과과목으로 인정되어 절대 축소 되거나 폐지 되지 않는다. 한창 신체발달이 활발한 청소년들에게는 에너지를 맘껏 쓸 수 있는 체육시간이 절대적으로 필요하다.

이번에도 비록 짧은 시간이었지만 <KBO 찾아가는 티볼교실>을 통해 기다리고 즐거워하는 학생들이 잠재적 야구팬이 될 수 있음을 나는 확신한다. 앞으로 야구인들이 더 많이 참여해서 티볼이 활성화 되는 것이 야구발전에도 도움이 되리라 기대해 본다.

Again this year, <KBO Visiting T-Ball Class> was held. The KBO Visiting T-Ball Class is a school sports and youth baseball activation program that has been going on since 2016, and was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Sports Promotion Agency. This year, it will be held for 190 elementary schools and 10 girls' high schools nationwide, and over the past nine years, it has visited 1,000 elementary schools nationwide to conduct T-Ball classes. KBO is a sponsorship project that dispatches talent donation committee members and T-Ball leaders of the Korea T-Ball Association to schools to educate teachers and students about T-Ball, a subject of the fifth grade, and to support T-Ball equipment for classes. With this sponsorship project, elementary school students are becoming familiar with baseball through T-ball activities in school sports and helping to expand the base of baseball in the future.

Even though the Shinheung Elementary School <Visiting T-Ball Class> class began at 7:20 a.m., young students were surprised as baseball players by the hot heat, voluntarily going to school from 7 a.m. to prepare for class. Despite the early hours, young students came out to the playground with bright faces and learned the technique of T-ball through batting and defensive practice with their friends and had a fun two-hour time with them.

I am working with young students to explain the basics of hitting to them, demonstrate them myself, and provide customized classes tailored to their eye level. First of all, when you are in a T-ball class with young students, you must be happy, fun, and happy. I also don't forget to sign autographs to the students one by one after the class is over.

The KBO Visiting T-Ball Class, which began in 1998, was said to have not been interested in the school, baseball, and the government at first. This program, which has entered its 27th year, has made great contributions to promoting T-Ball. Executive director Park Chul-ho, who is a hidden contributor to the arrival of T-balls in Korea, has been silently running around the country to promote T-balls for the past 27 years.

Now, T-ball is proudly listed in the fifth-grade elementary school textbook and is in formal class. Park Chul-ho, executive director of the "T-ball Federation", worked hard to establish the T-ball. Knowing that there are T-balls that are not dangerous and can be done in a narrow space to naturally love and get close to baseball from childhood, executive director Park Chul-ho studied a lot about T-ball during his six-year study in Japan.

Although he is a non-baseball player, he loves baseball more than baseball players. Although it is not obvious until Korean baseball comes to this place, it can be said that thanks to these hidden contributors, which are the foundation of baseball development, the Korean professional baseball has played a big role in surpassing the phenomenal record of 10 million people for two consecutive years this year. I am truly grateful as a baseball player to see Park Chul-ho running around the country in a hurry.

I've been doing this program together for 7 years, and I thought it would be nice if baseball and T-ball naturally melted into school sports classes. In Korea, physical education hours are decreasing as the grade goes up because it is an entrance exam-oriented class organization. In the United States, physical education time is recognized as an important subject until high school graduation and is never reduced or abolished. Adolescents who are in the midst of active physical development absolutely need physical education time to use their energy to their fullest.

I'm sure that students who wait and have fun through the <KBO Visiting T-Ball Class>, even though it was a short time, can become potential baseball fans. I hope that more baseball players will participate in the future and the activation of T-Ball will help develop baseball.
