12월 13일, 대한야구소프트볼협회가 주최·주관한 ‘2025 야구 디비전리그 야구강습’에 참여했다. 열정이 얼마나 뜨거웠던지 참가 경쟁률이 무려 30:1이었고, 광주와 부산을 비롯해 전국 각지에서 선수들이 모였다.

강습회는 투수 파트를 윤석민 선수가, 타격과 내·외야 파트를 정근우 선수가 맡았다. 나는 포수 파트를 맡아 약 두 시간 동안 강습과 사인회를 진행했다. 솔직히 타격 지도에도 마음이 끌렸지만, 이날 가장 중요한 과제는 포수였다. 사회인 야구 선수들이 가장 배우고 싶어하는 포수 기술, 그중에서도 블로킹과 번트 수비, 캐칭을 직접 보여주며 가르치는 일이 나에게 주어진 책임이었다.

포수 장비를 직접 착용하고 시범을 보여주는 일은 결코 쉽지 않다. 특히 전문 선수들이 아닌 사회인과 청소년들에게는 말로만 설명하는 것보다 몸으로 보여주는 것이 가장 효과적이다. 그래서 나는 포수 마스크와 렉가드를 차고 직접 시범을 보였다. 한 명에게 충분히 집중할 수는 없었지만, 핵심과 경험은 최대한 온전히 전하려 노력했다.

포수 장비를 착용해가며 시범을 보여주고 있자니, 지난 7월 인도네시아 유소년 캠프에서 몸으로 아이들을 가르쳤던 경험이 문득 떠올랐다. 어린 선수들과 함께 땀을 흘리며 그들의 집중과 반짝이는 눈빛을 마주했을 때처럼, 이번 사회인 강습에서도 함께 움직이고 호흡하며 배우는 과정은 나에게 여전히 큰 의미가 있었다.

일흔에 가까운 나이에도 이렇게 선수들과 함께 훈련하고 기술을 나눌 수 있다는 사실이 나는 늘 감사하다. 체력은 예전 같지 않지만, 글러브를 끼고 장비를 착용해 직접 시범을 보여줄 수 있는 시간 자체가 충분히 값지다. 내가 가진 재능을 나누고, 선수들이 그것을 받아 자신만의 기술과 경험으로 만들어가는 모습을 보는 것만으로도 보람이 크다.

앞으로도 내 체력이 허락하는 한, 유소년과 엘리트, 사회인 선수들을 가리지 않고 경험과 기술을 나눌 것이다. 함께 땀 흘리고 웃으며 쌓아가는 작은 순간들 속에서, 누군가의 성장과 꿈이 조금씩 실현되는 모습을 지켜보는 것. 그 과정 자체가 살아가는 기쁨이며, 내가 여전히 야구를 사랑하는 이유다.

On December 13th, I participated in the ‘2025 Baseball Division League Baseball Clinic’ hosted and organized by the Korea Baseball Softball Association. The level of passion was so intense that the competition ratio for participation was a staggering 30:1, with players gathering from all over the country, including Gwangju and Busan.

The clinic featured pitcher Yun Seok-min covering the pitching segment, while Jung Keun-woo handled batting and infield/outfield instruction. I was responsible for the catcher segment, conducting a roughly two-hour clinic and autograph session. Honestly, I was also drawn to batting instruction, but the most crucial task that day was catcher coaching. My responsibility was to demonstrate and teach the catching techniques amateur players most wanted to learn—specifically blocking, bunt defense, and catching.

Demonstrating while wearing full catching gear is never easy. Especially for amateurs and youth players, showing them physically is far more effective than just explaining verbally. So I put on the catcher's mask and leg guards and demonstrated myself. Though I couldn't focus fully on each individual, I strove to convey the core principles and my experience as completely as possible.

As I demonstrated while wearing the catcher's gear, memories suddenly surfaced of teaching the children hands-on at the youth camp in Indonesia last July. Just as when I sweated alongside the young players, meeting their focused, sparkling eyes, the process of moving, breathing, and learning together during this adult training session still held great meaning for me.

I am always grateful that even at nearly seventy, I can still train alongside players and share techniques. My stamina isn't what it used to be, but the time itself, putting on the glove and gear to demonstrate directly, is invaluable. Simply sharing my talent and seeing players take it and shape it into their own skills and experiences is deeply rewarding.

As long as my physical strength permits, I will continue sharing my experience and skills with everyone—youth players, elite athletes, and adult players alike. Witnessing someone's growth and dreams gradually come true through those small moments built together, sweating and laughing side by side. That process itself is the joy of living, and the reason I still love baseball.
