12월 15일, 라오스 주석 통룬 시술릿과 이재명 대통령이 오찬을 함께하는 자리에 참석했다. 낯설지 않은 이름, 낯설지 않은 얼굴이었다. 라오스에서 야구를 전파해온 지도 어느덧 11년, 이 길 위에서 다시 마주한 인연이었다.

라오스와의 인연은 2019년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 문재인 대통령이 동남아 3개국 순방 중 라오스를 방문했을 때 만찬에 초대받아 짧지만 의미 있는 대화를 나눴다. 당시 통룬 시술릿은 총리였고, 나는 라오스 야구협회 부회장으로 현지에서 활동하고 있었다. 2017년 7월 3일, 라오스 최초의 야구협회가 설립된 이후 지금까지 그 자리를 지키고 있다.

그날 만찬 전 진행된 문재인 대통령과 통룬 총리의 단독 회담에서, 뜻밖에도 내 이야기가 자연스럽게 오갔다는 말을 보좌관들로부터 전해 들었다.

“한국 야구를 대표하는 포수 출신 지도자 이만수 감독이 라오스에서 야구를 통해 봉사와 교류를 이어가고 있다. 사실상 민간외교관 역할을 하고 있다.”

그 말에 회담 분위기가 한층 부드러워졌다는 후문도 함께였다.

통룬 총리는 라오스 야구 발전과 야구장 건립에 대한 고마움을 전했고, 문재인 대통령 역시 라오스 야구팀의 국제대회 참가와 정부 차원의 지원에 깊은 감사를 표했다고 한다. 야구 하나로 두 나라가 이어지고 있다는 사실이, 그날은 유난히 또렷하게 느껴졌다.

이번 만남은 두 번째였다. 총리에서 주석이 된 통룬 시술릿을 다시 마주하며, 시간의 흐름과 함께 쌓여온 신뢰를 실감했다. 나는 한국인으로서, 또 야구인으로서 자긍심을 갖고 이 길을 걸어왔다. 라오스에서의 11년, 그리고 미국에서의 10년 동안 내가 스스로에게 세운 원칙은 하나였다. 어디에 있든, 민간외교관의 자세로 행동하자는 것. 그 시간들이 쌓여 시카고 화이트삭스 구단에서는 나를 ‘Ambassador of the Chicago White Sox’라 불러주었다.

라오스 전 야구협회장 캄파이는 만날 때마다 같은 말을 건넨다. "처음에는 믿지 못했지만, 이제는 이만수 감독이 없으면 안 된다. 그의 꾸준함과 신뢰가 라오스 국민들에게 한국을 다르게 보게 했다.” 그의 손을 맞잡을 때마다, 야구가 단순한 스포츠를 넘어 사람과 나라를 잇는 언어가 될 수 있음을 다시 느낀다.

나는 그저 야구를 사랑하며 평생을 살아온 사람이다. 2014년 10월, 프로야구 현장을 떠난 뒤에도 야구는 여전히 나를 움직이게 한다. 야구로 누군가에게 꿈과 희망을 전할 수 있다는 사실이 나를 다시 현장으로 이끈다. 야구가 있는 곳이면 어디든, 그곳이 나의 현장이다.

나는 지금까지 팬들에게 받은 사랑을 아직 다 갚지 못했다. 그래서 오늘도, 그리고 내일도 야구와 함께 걷는다. 삶이 허락하는 날까지, 겸손한 자세로 진정성을 잃지 않은 민간외교관으로서 야구가 이어준 이 길 위에서, 나는 계속 걸어갈 것이다.


 < Eleven Years Connected Through Baseball, On the Front Lines of People-to-People Diplomacy >

On December 15, I attended a luncheon where President Lee Jae-myung met with Laotian President Thongloun Sisoulith. The name was familiar, the face was familiar. It had been 11 years since I began spreading baseball in Laos, and here we were, our paths crossing again on this journey.

My connection with Laos dates back to 2019. When President Moon Jae-in visited Laos during his tour of three Southeast Asian countries, I was invited to a dinner and had a brief but meaningful conversation. At that time, Thongloun Sisoulith was Prime Minister, and I was serving as Vice President of the Lao Baseball Association, active locally. Since July 3, 2017, when Laos' first baseball association was established, I have maintained that position.

I later heard from aides that, unexpectedly, my name came up naturally during the private meeting between President Moon Jae-in and Prime Minister Thongloun before that dinner.

“Manager Lee Man-soo, a former catcher representing Korean baseball, is continuing service and exchange through baseball in Laos. He is effectively acting as a private diplomat.”

It was also reported that this remark further softened the atmosphere of the meeting.

Prime Minister Thongloun expressed gratitude for the development of baseball in Laos and the construction of the baseball field. President Moon Jae-in, in turn, conveyed deep appreciation for the Laotian baseball team's participation in international competitions and the government-level support provided. The fact that baseball connects the two nations felt particularly vivid that day.

This was our second meeting. Facing Thongloun Sisoulith again, now President, I felt the trust built over time. As a Korean and a baseball person, I have walked this path with pride. During my 11 years in Laos and 10 years in the United States, I held to one principle: wherever I am, act as a private diplomat. Those years accumulated, and the Chicago White Sox organization came to call me the ‘Ambassador of the Chicago White Sox’.

Every time I meet former Laos Baseball Association President Kampai, he says the same thing: “At first, I couldn't believe it, but now we can't do without Manager Lee Man-soo. His steadfastness and trustworthiness have made the Laotian people see Korea differently.” Each time I clasp his hand, I feel anew that baseball can transcend being a mere sport to become a language connecting people and nations.

I am simply someone who has lived my entire life loving baseball. Even after leaving the professional baseball scene in October 2014, baseball still moves me. The fact that baseball can deliver dreams and hope to someone draws me back to the field. Wherever baseball is played, that is my field.

I have yet to fully repay the love I've received from fans. That's why I walk with baseball today, and tomorrow. As long as life permits, I will continue walking this path baseball has connected me to, as a humble, sincere private diplomat.
