< 훈련 대신 강연 >

전국으로 재능기부 다니다보면 감독들이 꼭 부탁하는 것이 있다. 열심히 운동하는 선수들과 학부형들 대상으로 강연해 달란다. 어린선수들이나 젊은 선수들은 매일 훈련 하지만 선수들이 앞선 선배들로부터 강연 들을 기회도 없고 또 왜 야구를 하며 무엇 때문에 연습을 해야 하는지에 대해 생각해 볼 기회가 좀처럼 없다고 한다.

요즈음 수많은 지도자들이 한결 같이 하는 이야기는 개인연습이나 단체훈련은 어디서나 똑 같이 할 수 있다고 한다. 그러나 정작 어린선수들이 가장 중요하게 생각하는 인성문제나 미래에 대한 이야기를 좀처럼 잘 들을 수 있는 기회가 없단다. 많은 지도자들이 훈련에 집중하는 것보다 가장 우선시 하는 것이 선수들의 인성이 중요하다는 것을 몸소 경험한 지도자라 기회가 될 때마다 강연을 부탁한다. '선배님께서 강연해 준다면 선수들뿐만 아니라 학부형들에게도 큰 도움이 된다'는 것이다.

후배 지도자들의 부탁에 훈련 보다는 강연 듣는 시간을 일부러 잡아 모든 학부형들도 참석할 수 있도록 저녁시간에 주로 강연한다. 나의 강연은 약 1시간 45분 동안 질의 응답과 강연을 하며 학부형과 선수 그리고 지도자와 함께 좋은 시간을 갖는다.

SK와이번스 팀에서 나와 국내와 해외로 다니면서 야구의 기술적인 면을 가르쳐 주는 것도 중요하지만 자라나는 어린선수들에게 이런 시간도 꼭 필요하다는 생각을 한다. 어린 야구선수들이 얼마나 알아 들었는지는 모르겠지만 야구의 선배로 또 어른으로 꼭 이들에게 들려주고 싶었던 이야기가 많은 선수들 중 한 명 이라도 꿈을 키우는데 보탬이 되었다면 나는 그것만으로 만족하고 감사하다.


          < Lectures Instead of Training >

When traveling nationwide to volunteer my skills, there's one thing coaches always ask me to do: give lectures to hardworking players and their parents. Young players train daily, yet they rarely get the chance to hear lectures from senior players who've gone before them. They also seldom have the opportunity to reflect on why they play baseball and what purpose their practice serves.

These days, countless coaches unanimously say that individual practice or group training can be done anywhere. However, young players rarely get the chance to hear about character development or their future, which they consider most important. Many coaches, having personally experienced that a player's character is more important than focusing solely on training, request lectures whenever the opportunity arises. They say, ‘If you give a lecture, it will be a great help not only to the players but also to the parents.’

At the request of junior coaches, I deliberately schedule lecture time over training, often in the evening so all parents can attend. My lectures last about an hour and forty-five minutes, including Q&A, creating a valuable time for parents, players, and coaches alike.

While teaching the technical aspects of baseball domestically and internationally with the SK Wyverns team is important, I also believe these moments are essential for young, developing players. I don't know how much the young baseball players understood, but as a senior figure in baseball and as an adult, I had many stories I wanted to share with them. If even one player found these talks helpful in nurturing their dreams, I am satisfied and grateful for that alone.
