인생과 야구의 공통점

인생이 늘 꽃길일 수 없듯 야구도 마찬가지다. 즐거움만 있다면 얼마나 좋겠는가. 그러나 승패가 갈리는 경기 앞에서, 때로는 감당하기 어려운 시련이 찾아온다. 나 역시 수없이 흔들리고 도망치고 싶었던 순간들이 있었다. 하지만 그럼에도 다시 마운드에 설 수 있었던 이유는, 야구가 내게 주는 의미와 가치를 굳게 붙잡았기 때문이다.

흔들림 없는 자기 확립

야구 선수들에게 가장 큰 적은 성적 부진만이 아니다. 그것은 바로 자기 자신과의 싸움이다. 성적이 좋을 때는 들뜨고, 나쁠 때는 쉽게 무너진다. 어린 선수들은 특히 외부의 평가에 휘둘리며 야구의 즐거움마저 잃어버린다.

아마추어와 프로의 경계

나는 아마추어와 프로의 세계를 분명히 구분해야 한다고 생각한다. 아마추어는 즐겁고 행복해야 한다. 어린 시절 공을 던지고 치는 그 자체가 기쁨이 되어야 한다. 어른이 되어 취미로 이어가는 사람에게도 마찬가지다. 그러나 프로는 다르다. 프로의 길은 고통과 인내, 때로는 실패를 감수해야 하는 길이다. 즐거움만으로는 결코 오래 버틸 수 없다. 프로에게 필요한 것은 뚜렷한 사명감과 흔들림 없는 의지다.

내가 달려올 수 있었던 이유

내가 여기까지 올 수 있었던 것은 무엇보다도 야구를 사랑했기 때문이다. 남들과는 다른 분명한 목표를 어린 시절부터 품고 있었고, 그것이 내 삶의 등불이 되어주었다. 그리고 마지막까지 지치지 않고 달려올 수 있었던 힘은 신앙심이었다. 그것이야말로 나를 일으켜 세우고, 다시 한 걸음을 내딛게 한 원동력이었다.

후배들에게 전하는 말

후배 선수들에게 전하고 싶은 말은 단순하다.
무엇을 위해 야구하는지, 그리고 무엇을 위해 살아가는지 늘 묻고 답하라.
의미와 가치를 분명히 할 때, 비로소 진정한 열정이 솟아난다. 그 열정은 고통을 견디게 하고, 반드시 성과로 이어지게 할 것이다.

It has been 55 years since I first picked up a baseball bat. Even to myself, it's hard to believe I've walked this one path for over half a century. How did I manage to run this far without ever experiencing a single bout of boredom? The answer isn't simple. Baseball wasn't just a sport to me; it was the meaning and value of my life. And the driving force that allowed me to persevere to the end was my faith.

The Common Ground Between Life and Baseball

Just as life isn't always a bed of roses, neither is baseball. How wonderful it would be if there were only joy. Yet, in the face of a game decided by victory or defeat, sometimes unbearable trials come knocking. I too had countless moments when I wavered and wanted to run away. But the reason I could still step back onto the mound was because I held fast to the meaning and value baseball gave me.

Unwavering Self-Assertion

For baseball players, the greatest enemy isn't just poor performance. It's the battle against oneself. When results are good, they get carried away; when they're bad, they easily crumble. Young players, especially, get swayed by external evaluations and lose even the joy of the game.

The problem arises when one fails to love oneself. When you become more conscious of external eyes than your inner voice, you oscillate between superiority and inferiority, trapped in endless anxiety. Ultimately, what matters are the fundamental questions: “Who am I?” and “Why do I play baseball?” Only players who can answer these questions remain unshaken.

The Boundary Between Amateur and Professional

I believe the worlds of amateur and professional must be clearly distinguished. Amateurs should be joyful and happy. For children, the very act of throwing and hitting a ball should be pure joy. The same applies to adults who continue playing as a hobby. But professionals are different. The path to becoming a pro is one of pain, endurance, and sometimes accepting failure. Joy alone is never enough to sustain you long-term. What a pro needs is a clear sense of purpose and unwavering will.

The Reason I Could Keep Running

The reason I could make it this far is, above all, because I loved baseball. From childhood, I held a distinct goal different from others, and that became the guiding light of my life. And the strength that allowed me to run tirelessly until the very end was my faith. That was the driving force that lifted me up and made me take one more step.

Words for the Next Generation

My message to the next generation of players is simple.
Always ask yourselves why you play baseball, and why you live.
Only when you clarify meaning and value does true passion spring forth. That passion will help you endure pain and inevitably lead to results.
