< 중국 땅에 심은 한 알의 밀알, 최정중 감독 >

오늘(3일) 나는 중국 '위해'시로 향할 준비를 마쳤다. 내일 위해 중세외국인학교 야구부가 창단을 한다고 해, 오랜 인연으로 이어져 온 최정중 감독을 응원하기 위해 일정을 모두 미루고 길을 나서게 되었다.

최정중 감독과의 인연은 2018년 인천동막초등학교에서 재능기부를 했던 자리에서 시작되었다. 그때부터 이어진 연락은 어느새 서로의 길을 응원하는 믿음으로 자라났다. 비록 후배지만, 야구에 대한 뜨거운 마음과 아이들을 품는 따뜻함에서 많은 것을 배울 수 있었다.

안정된 길을 뒤로하고 중국행을 준비한다는 소식을 들었을 때 놀라움이 컸다. 하지만 오래전부터 마음속에 품어왔던 “야구의 불모지에서 아이들을 일으켜 세우고 싶다”는 바람을 들었을 때, 그 결심이 쉽게 만들어진 것이 아니라는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 오랜 기간 고민했고, 주변의 반대도 많았을 것이다. 편안한 자리를 떠난다는 것은 결코 단순한 용기가 아니라, 더 멀리 바라보는 신념에서 오는 결단이기 때문이다.

나는 지난 11년 동안 라오스·베트남·캄보디아·인도네시아 등 동남아 여러 나라를 다니며 야구를 전파했다. 외로웠던 순간도 있었고, 왜 그렇게까지 하느냐는 이야기를 수도 없이 들었다. 그 길을 묵묵히 걸을 수 있었던 것은 단지 사명감 때문만은 아니었다. 그런데 최정중 감독이 “선배님이 외롭게 걸어가는 모습을 지켜보며 언젠가 자신도 야구를 위해 모험을 하고 싶었다”고 고백하던 순간, 오래 품어온 쓸쓸함이 눈 녹듯 사라지며 마음 깊은 곳이 따뜻하게 흔들렸다. 혼자라 생각했던 길을 누군가는 따라오고 있었고, 그 뒷모습이 또 다른 삶을 흔들어 깨우고 있었다는 사실이 가슴을 벅차게 만들었다.

최정중 감독은 군산남초등학교에서 오랜 기간 유소년을 지도하며 성실함과 진정성을 인정받아 왔다. 아이들의 미래를 위해 야구뿐 아니라 독서·일기·공부를 강조하는 지도 철학은 많은 부모와 선수들의 신뢰를 이끌어왔다. 그런 지도자가 수많은 만류를 뒤로하고 낯선 중국 땅으로 걸음을 옮겼다는 사실이 더 깊은 울림을 주었다. 야구와 아이들, 그리고 미래를 위해 자신을 ‘한 알의 밀알’로 내어놓는 선택이었기 때문이다.

스포츠는 단순한 경쟁이나 승부로 끝나지 않는다. 함께 뛰며 배우는 정정당당함, 흘린 땀 속에서 자라는 협동과 희생은 책으로는 배울 수 없는 값진 자산이다. 최정중 감독은 이 가치를 누구보다 잘 알고 있고, 아이들에게 이 길을 통해 더 큰 사람으로 자라나는 법을 전해 왔다. 그래서 이번 중국행이 단순한 이직이나 모험이 아니라, 더 넓은 세상에서 더 많은 아이들에게 이 가치를 심어주기 위한 사명임을 나는 잘 알고 있다.

이제 '위해'라는 새로운 땅에서 또 하나의 씨앗이 심어진다. 한국에서 오랜 시간 아이들을 지도하며 쌓아온 철학과 마음이 중국 아이들 속에서도 뿌리를 내릴 것이다. 부족함도, 어려움도, 낯섦도 분명 있을 것이다. 그러나 재능보다 중요한 것은 마음이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있는 지도자라면, 어떤 환경에서도 길을 만들어낼 것이라 믿는다.

오늘 나는 오랜 인연을 다시 마주하기 위해 '위해'로 들어간다. 새로운 출발선에 선 후배를 응원하며, 그 결단이 먼 훗날 많은 아이들에게 생명의 길이 되기를 바란다. 누구보다 뜨겁게 아이들을 품어온 지도자의 선택이 조용하지만 단단하게 세상 속으로 퍼져나가기를 기도한다.

Today (the 3rd), I finished preparing to head to Weihai, China. Since the baseball team at Weihai Middle School for Foreigners is being founded tomorrow, I postponed all my plans and set out on the road to cheer on Coach Choi Jeong-jung, with whom I share a long-standing connection.

Choi Jung-joong's relationship with manager Choi Jung-joong began with a talent donation at Incheon Dongmak Elementary School in 2018. The contact that has continued since then has grown into a belief in supporting each other's paths. Although he is a junior, he could learn a lot from his passion for baseball and the warmth of embracing children.

I was very surprised when I heard that I was preparing to go to China, leaving a stable path behind. However, when I heard that I wanted to raise my children from the barren land of baseball, which I had been thinking about for a long time, I could see that the decision was not made easily. There must have been a lot of opposition from people around me and long thought. Leaving a comfortable position is never a simple courage, but a decision that comes from a belief that looks further.

For the past 11 years, I have spread baseball to many Southeast Asian countries, including Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia. There were times when I was lonely, and I was told countless times why I was doing that. It wasn't just because of my sense of duty that I was able to walk silently on that path. However, as soon as Choi Jung-joong confessed, "Watching you walk lonely, I wanted to take an adventure for baseball someday," the long-held loneliness disappeared like snow and the deep part of my heart shook warmly. It made me feel overwhelmed that someone was following the path I thought I was alone, and that the back was shaking and waking up another life.

Coach Choi Jung-joong has been recognized for his sincerity and sincerity while guiding youth at Gunsan Nam Elementary School for a long time. The guiding philosophy that emphasizes reading, diary, and study as well as baseball for the future of children has led to the trust of many parents and players. The fact that such a leader moved to unfamiliar Chinese land, leaving behind numerous discourses, gave a deeper resonance. It was because it was a choice to give himself as a "grain of wheat" for baseball, children, and the future.

Sports do not end with just competition or competition. The fairness of running and learning together, cooperation and sacrifice that grow in sweat are valuable assets that cannot be learned through books. Coach Choi Jung-joong knows this value better than anyone else, and he has taught his children how to grow up to be a bigger person through this path. So I know that this trip to China is not just a job change or adventure, but a mission to instill this value in more children in the wider world.

Another seed is now planted in the new land of harm. Chinese children will have their roots in the philosophy and heart that they have built up while guiding their children for a long time in Korea. There must be inadequacies, difficulties, and unfamiliarity. However, I believe that any leader who is well aware that the mind is more important than talent will create a path in any environment.

Today, I am going in to face a long-term relationship again. I support my juniors on a new starting line, and I hope that the decision will be a path to life for many children in the distant future. I pray that the choice of a leader who has been holding children hotter than anyone else will spread quietly but firmly into the world.
