< 희망을 던지고, 미래를 받다 >

한국발달장애인야구소프트볼협회 '후원의 밤'이 지난주 성황리에 막을 내렸다. 한 해를 마무리하며 서로의 손을 맞잡은 뜻깊은 자리였다.

이날 회원과 임원들에게 사인볼 한 개를 10만 원에 판매했는데, 시작하자마자 12개가 순식간에 완판됐다. 단순한 기념품이 아니다. 희망을 향한 헌신적인 투자, 그 자체였다. 작년에도 24개가 준비되자 10분 만에 모두 팔려나갔다. 그 뜨거운 성원은 협회가 걸어온 길의 진정성을 입증해준다.

협회는 2021년 비영리단체로 출범했다. 발달장애인들에게 티볼야구를 보급하고, 선수들이 참여할 수 있는 대회를 운영하는 것이 사명이다. 고립된 일상에서 벗어나 몸을 움직이며 사람을 만나고, 팀의 일원으로 뛰는 경험.

이것은 이 친구들에게 단순한 운동이 아니라 삶을 바꾸는 문이다. 야구는 늘 그랬다. 누군가에겐 꿈을, 누군가에겐 자존감을, 누군가에겐 다시 살아갈 용기를 선물했다. 발달장애인에게 티볼은 그 모든 것을 동시에 건네는 기적 같은 스포츠다.

협회는 지금까지 회원과 임원들의 소박한 기부와 헌신적인 봉사로 유지돼 왔다. 화려한 행사를 치를 여유는 없었다. 그러나 우리는 남들에게 보여주기 위한 대회를 한 번도 생각해본 적이 없다. 한 장의 배너보다, 한 명 선수의 웃음이 더 중요했다. 그 믿음 하나로 여기까지 왔다. 이것이 우리의 힘이다.

최근에는 감동적인 소식도 전해졌다. SK텔레콤이 우리 활동에 관심을 보인 것이다. 대기업이 보여준 따뜻한 시선과 지원은 선수들에게 새로운 무대와 더 넓은 기회를 열어준다. 기업의 사회적 역할이 어떤 의미를 가지는지 다시 한번 절감했다. 도움을 보태준 모든 기업에게 진심을 담아 감사드린다.

하지만 우리는 처음의 마음을 절대 잊지 않을 것이다. 우리들이 처음 시작할 때의 초심을 잃지 않기 위해 회원들과 임원들이 비록 힘든 상황이지만 끝까지 자체적으로 발달장애인티볼야구대회를 이끌어 가려고 한다. 이 대회는 프로야구에서 받은 어떤 트로피보다 값지다. 야구로 얻은 사랑을 사회에 돌려야 한다는 평생의 숙제를 갚는 가장 소중한 약속이다.

매 대회에서 마주하는 순간들을 잊을 수 없다. 평생 보호의 대상처럼만 여겨지던 이 친구들이, 티볼 배트 하나를 쥐는 순간 세상과 연결된다. 그라운드로 걸어 나올 때, 늘 굳어 있던 얼굴에 웃음이 피어난다. 값비싼 장비도, 화려한 조명도 필요 없다. '함께 뛴다'는 감각 자체가 이들에게는 세상에서 가장 큰 자신감이다.

부모님들은 그런 자녀의 모습을 보며 눈물을 흘린다. 그 눈물에는 처음으로 마주한 아이의 가능성, 사회 속에서 스스로 설 수 있다는 벅찬 희망이 담겨 있다. 넓은 공간에서 신체활동을 시작하고, 거기서 흥미를 얻고, 경기에 몰두하고, 이기려고 노력하는 순간들이 만족감,성취감을 느끼며 행복해 하는 선수들의 모습을 볼 때면 나의 삶에서 이들과 함께 이 일을 정말 잘 했다는 생각이 한두번이 아니다.

티볼은 힘들이지 않고 부상 위험이 적어 발달장애 선수들에게 최적의 스포츠다. 경기 중에는 선생님이 선수의 손을 꼭 잡고 함께 달린다. 그 손을 잡는 순간, 선수들은 천하를 다 얻은 표정을 짓는다. 그 장면 하나가 티볼의 가치를, 그리고 우리가 왜 이 일을 하는지를 모두 설명해준다.

발달장애인은 대한민국의 소중한 국민이다. 동등한 기본권을 누려야 하며, 스포츠는 그 권리를 실현하는 가장 직접적인 통로다. 티볼은 이들에게 단순한 취미가 아니라 존엄성과 자존감을 되찾아주는 사회적 장치다. 그리고 우리는 지금, 이들의 손을 꼭 잡아줄 '다음 주자'를 기다리고 있다.

이 무대는 이미 수많은 기적을 만들었다. 나는 앞으로도 이 선수들에게 말하고 싶다. "너도 할 수 있다. 너는 이미 훌륭하다." 따뜻한 관심, 작은 후원, 한 번의 참여가 또 한 명의 선수에게 세상을 열어준다. 이 감동의 장면들이 계속될 수 있도록, 여러분의 마음을 더해주길 기대한다. 우리 사회 전체가 함께 만들어가는 이 기적의 그라운드에, 여러분도 함께 서주길 바란다.

The Korea Baseball Softball Association for the Developmentally Disabled ended with great success last week. It was a meaningful occasion to hold each other's hands at the end of the year.

Members and executives sold out a signed ball for 100,000 won on the day, but 12 of them were sold out in an instant as soon as they started. It was not just a souvenir. It was a dedicated investment in hope. When 24 were prepared last year, they were sold out in 10 minutes. The fervent support proves the sincerity of the association's path.

The association was launched as a non-profit organization in 2021. Its mission is to distribute T-ball baseball to people with developmental disabilities and to run competitions in which players can participate. Experience of moving away from daily life of isolation, meeting people, and playing as part of a team.

This is not just a sport for them, but a life-changing door. Baseball has always been like that. It gave someone a dream, someone a sense of self-esteem, and someone the courage to live again. To people with developmental disabilities, T-ball is a miraculous sport that gives them all at the same time.

Until now, the association had been maintained through simple donations and dedicated service from its members and executives. It could not afford to hold a spectacular event. But we have never thought of a competition to show others. One player's smile was more important than a single banner. That belief alone has made us this far. This is our power.

Recently, touching news was also delivered. SK Telecom has shown interest in our activities. The warm gaze and support shown by large companies open up a new stage and wider opportunities for players. We once again realized what corporate social roles mean. We sincerely thank all companies for their help.

Nevertheless, we will never forget our initial commitment. In order not to lose our initial commitment to the beginning, the members and executives are committed to leading the T-Baseball Championship on their own, albeit in a difficult situation. This championship is more valuable than any other trophy we have won in professional baseball. It is the most precious promise to repay a lifetime of homework that requires us to give back the love we gained through baseball to society.

I can't forget the moments I face in every competition. These friends, who have always been regarded as objects of protection for life, connect with the world the moment they hold a T-ball bat. When I walk out to the ground, I smile on my face. They do not need expensive equipment or fancy lighting. The sense of "running together" itself is the biggest confidence in them.

Parents shed tears when they see their children like that. The tears contain the possibility of a child facing them for the first time and the overwhelming hope of being able to stand on their own in society. When I see players who start physical activity in a large space, get interest from it, immerse themselves in the game, and are happy with the moments when they try to win, I think I did a really good job with them in my life.

T-ball is the best sport for athletes with developmental disabilities because it is effortless and has low risk of injury. During the game, the teacher holds the player's hand and runs with him. The moment they hold the hand, the players make a face that has won the world. One scene explains both the value of T-ball and why we do this.

People with developmental disabilities are precious citizens of the Republic of Korea. They should enjoy equal basic rights, and sports is the most direct channel for them to realize those rights. T-ball is not just a hobby for them, but a social device that restores dignity and self-esteem. And now we are waiting for the 'next runner' who will hold their hands tightly.

The stage has already made many miracles. I want to keep saying to these players, "You can do it. You are already great." Warm attention, small support, and one participation open the world to another player. I hope you will add your heart so that these touching scenes can continue. I hope that you will stand together in this miraculous ground that our entire society creates together.
