‘이만수 포수상·홈런상’이 올해로 어느덧 아홉 번째를 맞았다. 어제 시작한 일 같았던 시간이 이제는 아마추어 야구의 흐름을 바꾸는 한 축으로 자리 잡았다. 올해 시상식은 22일 KBO 강당에서 열릴 예정이며, 또 한 명의 포수와 한 명의 강타자가 새로운 기록 위에 이름을 올리게 된다.

이 상을 만들게 된 이유는 단순한 ‘시상’의 의미를 넘어, 한국 야구의 근간을 바로 세우려는 마음에서였다. 십여 년 전만 해도 포수는 아마추어 선수들이 가장 기피하는 자리였다. 스포트라이트가 집중되는 특정 포지션으로만 쏠림 현상이 심해지며 포수라는 축이 흔들리기 시작했다. 그 흐름을 바로잡고자 ‘포수상’을 세웠다.

홈런상 역시 같은 문제의식에서 출발했다. 알루미늄 배트에서 나무 배트로 전환되던 시기, 아마추어 야구에서는 홈런이 사라지다시피 했다. 단타 위주의 타격이 당연해지며 대형 타자가 자랄 토양이 점점 약해지고 있었다. 이대로라면 한국 야구의 힘이 약해질 수 있다는 위기감이 홈런상의 출발점이 되었다. 다행히 최근에는 나무 배트로도 한 시즌 여러 개의 홈런을 기록하는 아마추어 선수가 등장하며 변화의 조짐이 분명해지고 있다.

이런 문제의식은 자연스럽게 ‘선정 과정’의 책임으로 이어졌다. 좋은 포수와 강타자를 찾기 위해 올해도 전국 대회장을 직접 살폈다. 프로 스카우트와 아마추어 지도자들에게 자료를 받아 선수들의 성장 가능성과 태도를 꼼꼼히 들여다보았다. 단순히 뛰어난 기록을 남긴 선수가 아니라, 한국 야구의 내일을 이끌 재목을 선택해야 한다는 부담이 해마다 더 깊어진다.

매년 상을 전하며 새롭게 이름을 올릴 두 선수에게 전하고 싶은 마음이 있다. 그라운드에서의 성취만큼 인격의 깊이가 함께 자라길 바란다는 것, 받은 응원을 언젠가 또 다른 누군가에게 건넬 수 있는 선수로 성장하길 바란다는 것이다. 이 길은 헐크파운데이션이 오래전부터 품어온 꿈, ‘야구로 더 좋은 세상을 만드는 길’이기도 하다.

아홉 해의 시간이 쌓이며 이 상은 비로소 자기 목소리를 갖기 시작했다. 한 번의 포구, 한 개의 홈런, 그리고 한 해의 성장이 모여 새겨지는 두 이름이 한국 야구의 내일을 비춘다. 또 시간이 흐르면, 새로운 두 이름이 같은 자리에서 다시 빛날 것이다.

포구와 스윙의 기록 속에 조용히 쌓여온 아홉 해의 시간. 그 축적이야말로 한국 야구가 앞으로도 흔들림 없이 걸어갈 힘이 되어주리라 믿는다.

The "Lee Man-soo Catcher Award and Home Run Award" marks the ninth anniversary this year. The time that seemed to have started yesterday has now become a pillar that changes the flow of amateur baseball. This year's award ceremony will be held at the KBO auditorium on Tuesday, and another catcher and another slugger will be named on the new record.

The reason for creating this award went beyond the simple meaning of "award" and was to establish the foundation of Korean baseball. Up until a decade ago, catcher was the most avoided position by amateur players. As the phenomenon of catcher only intensified, the axis of catcher began to falter. To correct the trend, a "catcher" was established.

The Home Run Award also started with the same awareness of the problem. In amateur baseball, home runs disappeared at a time when aluminum bats were switched to wooden bats. As short-hitting became natural, the soil for large hitters to grow was getting weaker. The sense of crisis that the power of Korean baseball could weaken at this rate became the starting point of the Home Run Award. Fortunately, recently, amateur players who record several home runs in a season with wooden bats have appeared, and signs of change are becoming clear.

This awareness of the issue naturally led to the responsibility of the "selection process." In order to find good catchers and sluggers, he personally visited stadiums across the country this year as well. After receiving data from professional scouts and amateur leaders, he scrutinized players' growth potential and attitude. Every year, the burden of choosing a talent who will lead the tomorrow of Korean baseball, rather than simply making outstanding records, grows deeper.

For the past nine years, the award has grown quietly but firmly. The sponsoring organizations that supported the award were also helpful. The Punggi Hongsam Awards will support the award-winning athletes with a one-year health ceremony, and Cho A-pharmaceutical will continue to support them with a heart of taking care of their players and their parents. Indonesia's Shinhwa Insol gives out the best quality gloves and supports their dreams, while Magic Can gives out sincere gifts to all attendees at the ceremony. The Hulk Foundation annually grants scholarships to the two players to share their challenges. Taking this opportunity, we deeply appreciate all the organizations that have worked hard for the future of Korean baseball.

I would like to deliver an award every year and convey it to the two players who will be newly named. They hope that the depth of their personality will grow as much as their achievements on the ground, and that they will grow into a player who can pass on the support they received to someone else someday. This path is also the "way to make a better world with baseball," a dream that the Hulk Foundation has had for a long time.

As the nine years progressed, the award finally began to have its own voice. The two names, one catch, one home run, and the year's growth, shine on the tomorrow of Korean baseball. As time goes by, the two new names will shine again on the same spot.

Nine years of quiet accumulation in the records of catches and swings. I believe that the accumulation will be the strength for Korean baseball to continue to walk without wavering.
