< 광야에 길을 만드는 사람들 >

2025년 한해를 되돌아 보며 많은 생각에 잠긴다. 올해도 한 개인으로서 상상할 수 없는 많은 일을 했다. 무엇보다 혼자서 그 많은 일은 절대 할 수 없는 일이다. 나와 함께 하는 많은 스텝진들과 기부자 그리고 동역자들이 있었기 때문에 가능했다.

이런 분들이 있기에 지난 11년 동안 동남아와 해외 그리고 국내로 다니면서 야구를 전파할 수 있었고 그들에게 희망을 전달 할 수 있었다. 나는 지난 55년 동안 오로지 한길로 달려오면서 야구를 통해 수많은 일들을 할 수 있어 늘 감사한다.

그중에 하나가 문경에 있는 글로벌선진학교 야구부가 재탄생하면서 총감독을 맡은 일이다. 정말 일흔을 바라보며 아직도 젊은 지도자나 선수들에게 나의 재능을 전달할 수 있고 그들과 함께 할 수 있어 나는 복 받은 사람이다.

무엇보다 권혁돈 감독은 선수들을 사랑으로 보듬어 주고 자식보다 어린 선수들을 큰아빠의 마음으로 지도하는 모습은 스포츠 종목을 떠나서 우리나라 모든 스포츠 지도자들이 배워야 할 덕목이라고 생각된다.

그는 선수별 맞춤형 훈련 프로그램을 운영하며, 기본기부터 고급 기술까지 체계적으로 지도한다. 특히, 수비 훈련에서는 반복적인 펑고 훈련을 통해 선수들의 반사 신경과 수비 능력을 극대화하고, 타격 훈련에서는 개별적인 타격 분석을 통해 선수들이 자신의 장점을 극대화할 수 있도록 돕는다. 이러한 세밀한 접근 방식이 그의 지도력을 더욱 돋보이게 한다. 특히 유소년부터 중·고·대학생까지 폭넓은 연령대를 지도하는 그의 역량은 놀라울 정도다.

두번째로 내가 총감독을 맡은 팀이 중국 위해시에 있는 '중세외국인학교' 야구부가 창단이 되면서 또다시 총감독 직책을 맡게 되었다. 지난번에도 여러번 글로 소개했지만 '중세외국인학교' 창단할 때 초대 감독을 맡은 최정중 감독과 함께 앞으로 있을 미래에 대해 힘을 쏟기로 했다.

최정중 감독이 이제 '위해'라는 새로운 땅에서 또 하나의 씨앗이 심어지면 먼 훗날 거대한 나무로 자랄 것이라는 기대감을 품고 있다. 한국에서 오랜 시간 아이들을 지도하며 쌓아온 철학과 마음이 중국 속에서도 반드시 뿌리를 내릴 것이라 믿는다. 부족함도, 어려움도, 낯섦도 분명 있을 것이다. 그러나 재능보다 중요한 것은 마음이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있는 지도자라면, 어떤 환경에서도 길을 만들어낼 것이라 믿는다.

나또한 최정중 감독이 중국 '위해시'에서 잘 적응할 수 있도록 뒤에서 끝임없이 그를 도와 줄 것이다. 그래서 최 감독이 조금이나마 힘이 되길 바라는 마음에 '중세외국인학교' 야구부 총감독을 기쁜 마음으로 받아드리기로 했다.

새로운 출발선에 선 후배를 응원하며, 그 결단이 먼 훗날 많은 아이들에게 생명의 길이 되기를 바란다. 누구보다 뜨겁게 아이들을 품어온 지도자의 선택이 조용하지만 단단하게 세상 속으로 퍼져나가기를 기도한다.


    < Those Who Make a Path in the Wilderness >

Reflecting on the year 2025, I find myself lost in thought. As an individual, I accomplished many unimaginable things this year. Above all, I could never have done all that alone. It was possible only because of the many staff members, donors, and fellow workers who stood with me.

Because of these people, over the past 11 years, I've been able to travel throughout Southeast Asia, overseas, and domestically to spread baseball and deliver hope to them. I am always grateful that, for the past 55 years, I've run down a single path and been able to accomplish so many things through baseball.

One of those things was taking on the role of head coach as the baseball team at Global Advanced School in Mungyeong was reborn. Approaching seventy, I feel truly blessed to still be able to share my talents with young coaches and players and to work alongside them.

Above all, Coach Kwon Hyuk-don embraces his players with love and guides them with the heart of a great uncle, even though they are younger than his own children. I believe this is a virtue all sports coaches in our country should learn, regardless of the sport.

He operates customized training programs for each player, systematically coaching them from fundamentals to advanced techniques. Particularly in defensive training, he maximizes players' reflexes and defensive skills through repetitive fielding drills. In batting practice, he helps players maximize their strengths through individualized swing analysis. This meticulous approach makes his leadership stand out. His ability to coach such a wide age range, from youth to middle school, high school, and college students, is truly remarkable.

Second, I was appointed head coach again when the baseball team at Zhongse Foreign School in Weihai, China, was founded. As I've mentioned several times before, I decided to dedicate my efforts to the future alongside Coach Choi Jeong-jung, who served as the inaugural head coach when the Zhongce Foreign School team was founded.

Coach Choi Jeong-jung now holds the expectation that planting another seed in the new land of ‘Weihai’ will one day grow into a mighty tree. He believes the philosophy and heart cultivated over many years coaching children in Korea will surely take root within China as well. There will undoubtedly be shortcomings, difficulties, and unfamiliarity. However, a leader who understands that heart matters more than talent will forge a path in any environment.

I, too, will tirelessly support Coach Choi behind the scenes to help him adapt well in Weihai City, China. Therefore, hoping to be even a small source of strength for Coach Choi, I have gladly accepted the position of Head Coach for the baseball team at the Middle School Foreigners' School.

Cheering on my junior standing at this new starting line, I hope this decision becomes a path of life for many children in the distant future. I pray that the choice of this leader, who has embraced children more passionately than anyone, will quietly yet firmly spread throughout the world.
