2025년 11월, 두바이에서 중동·남아시아 최초의 프로야구 리그 Baseball United가 시작된다.

인도·파키스탄·UAE 팀들이 모여 정식 시즌을 치른다는 사실만으로도, 그동안 크리켓과 축구가 전부였던 이 지역에 야구라는 새로운 숨결이 들어온다는 게 느껴진다. Mumbai Cobras, Karachi Monarchs, Arabia Wolves, Mid East Falcons… 낯선 땅 위에 처음으로 적히는 이 팀들의 이름이, 마치 야구라는 언어를 새로 배우는 첫 문장처럼 다가온다.

단순한 리그 출범이 아니라, 야구 맵 한 켠에 조용히 불빛 하나가 켜지는 장면 같아서 더 의미가 깊다. 작은 시작이지만, 때로는 그런 작은 불씨가 큰 변화를 이끌기도 한다. 그리고 동남아 여러 나라에서 선수들과 함께 공을 던지고, 대회를 치뤄오며, 야구를 전해온 나에게 이 소식은 조금 남다르게 느껴진다.

내가 하는 일은 거창한 것도, 대단한 것도 아니다. 그저 낮은 자리에서 선수들의 손을 잡아주고, 야구를 처음 접하는 눈빛을 지켜보는 사람이지만… 이런 움직임을 보면 마음속 깊은 곳에서 문득 바람이 인다. “부디 내가 걸어가는 길도 헛되지 않기를.”

누군가의 첫 시도, 누군가의 작은 용기들이 결국엔 더 큰 흐름으로 이어질 수 있기를 바라는 마음이다.

동남아 야구의 미래가 어떤 모양으로 열릴지는 아직 알 수 없다. 하지만 그것과 별개로, 나는 나의 속도로, 내가 만나는 사람들과 함께, 야구가 필요한 곳이라면 어디든 천천히 발을 옮길 뿐이다. 이 길이 크지도, 화려하지도 않아도 괜찮다.

다만 나의 하루들이 누군가의 첫 공, 첫 배트, 첫 기억이 되어준다면…
그걸로 충분하다.

In November 2025, Baseball United, the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia, will commence in Dubai.

The mere fact that teams from India, Pakistan, and the UAE will gather to play a full season signals a new breath of life—baseball—entering a region previously dominated solely by cricket and soccer. Mumbai Cobras, Karachi Monarchs, Arabia Wolves, Mid East Falcons… These team names, written for the first time on unfamiliar soil, feel like the very first sentences in a newly learned language called baseball.

It feels more than just a league launch; it's like a quiet light turning on in a corner of baseball's map, making it deeply meaningful. It's a small beginning, but sometimes such small sparks ignite great change. And for me, who has thrown balls with players and held tournaments across Southeast Asia, spreading baseball, this news feels a little different.

My work isn't grand or extraordinary. I'm just someone who stands in a humble place, holding players' hands and watching the eyes of those encountering baseball for the first time... Yet, seeing movements like this, a sudden breeze stirs deep within my heart. “May the path I walk not be in vain.”

It's a hope that someone's first attempt, someone's small acts of courage, will eventually connect into a larger current.

The shape the future of Southeast Asian baseball will take remains unknown. But regardless, I simply move forward at my own pace, alongside the people I meet, wherever baseball is needed. It's fine if this path isn't grand or flashy.

If only my days can become someone's first ball, first swing, first memory...
