< 꿈이 있는 곳에 희망이 있다 >

“사람이 꿈을 버리지 않으면, 그 꿈은 반드시 이루어진다.” 나는 야구인이다. 야구는 내 인생 그 자체다. 지금도 라오스, 베트남, 캄보디아, 곧 진출할 인도네시아에 이르기까지, 대한민국의 선진야구를 전파하며 야구의 꿈을 이어가고 있다.

야구를 통해 참 많은 사랑을 받았다. 그 사랑을 사회에 조금이라도 돌려주고 싶었다. 발달장애인들도 야구를 하면 행복해질 수 있다고 믿었다. 야구는 분명 이들의 삶에 희망의 등대가 될 수 있다는 생각을 갖고 시작했던 것이 벌써 3회가 끝났다.

나는 이들과 함께 티볼야구대회를 하며 발달장애인들에게 긍정적 영향을 줄 수 있다는 희망을 버리지 않고 지금까지 달려왔다. 처음에는 부모님들이나 선수들이 위험한 야구를 하지 않으려는 선입견을 갖고 있었다. 티볼야구는 위험하거나 다치는 일이 없고 봉사자와 함께 손을 잡고 운동하는 것이라 부모님들이나 선수들 간에 좋은 인식을 갖고부터 참가하는 인원이 많아졌다.

참가하는 선수들만 많아진 것이 아니라 이들을 보호하고 관리하는 단체들도 시간이 갈수록 감당할 수 없을 정도로 많아졌다. 선수들이 티볼야구를 통해 친구들과 함께 어울리고 함께 뛰며 땀 흘리는 순간, 그들의 눈빛과 해맑은 웃음은 살아 있었다. 닫혀 있던 그들의 마음이 야구를 통해 문이 열리고, 그 안에서 새로운 희망이 피어난 것을 보았다.

그 변화는 지금도 계속되고 있다. 매년 열리는 대회에서 부모님들은 자녀의 경기를 바라보며 눈시울을 붉히는 것을 자주 목격하게 된다. “저렇게 웃는 모습은 처음 봅니다.” 한 어머니는 조용히 눈물을 훔쳤다. 아이가 세상과 소통하는 그 순간을 오랫동안 기다려왔기 때문일 것이다.

이번 대회에 처음 출전한 광주광역시 동구 'E.T(East Tigers)야구단'이 첫 전국 무대에서 우승을 거두었다. 광주광역시 동구 E.T 팀이 첫 출전했지만 그들의 실력은 족히 대한민국 발달장애인 티볼야구 팀들 중에서 세손가락 안에 들 정도로 정말 뛰어난 실력을 갖추었다. 서울의 호산나대학과 대전 팀 그리고 광주의 E.T 팀이 아마 쌍벽을 이루지 않을까? 생각한다.

특히 광주광역시 동구 E.T 팀은 임택 동구 구청장님의 열정적인 헌신과 후원 그리고 E.T 팀의 구단주로 활동하며 발달장애인들이 사회의 한 일원으로서 함께 할 수 있도록 많은 것들을 배려한다고 한다. 임택 동구 구청장님이 얼마나 열정적인 분이면 이번 대회에 참가하기 위해 광주에서 서울까지 선수들과 함께 버스를 타고 올라왔을 정도로 임택 동구 구청장님의 열정이 대단하다.

제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회가 끝난지 보름도 되지 않았는데 광주시 동구 이원근 주민복지 국장님으로부터 연락이 왔다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회에 처녀출전한 광주시 동구 E.T 팀 선수들과 임원진 그리고 임택 동구 구청장님의 관심은 야구인 나조차도 놀라울 뿐이다. 보름 가까이 시간이 지났지만 지금도 잊을 수 없었던 것은 그날 임택 동구 구청장님과 학부형들 그리고 선수들과 함께 어울려 그라운드에서 함성 지르고 뛰어 다니는 모습을 보며 어디선가 모르는 뭉클한 마음이 들었던 기억이 있다. 지금도 제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회의 여운이 사라지지 않고 있다.

제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회를 치루면서 깜짝 놀란 것은 해가 거듭 될수록 대회 규모나 참가하는 팀 그리고 선수들과 동참하는 임원 및 학부형과 스폰서가 많아 졌다. 지난번 열렸던 제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회에 참가한 선수들과 임원들 그리고 학부형들이 족히 500명이 훨씬 넘을 것 같다.

지난 6월 11일 광주시 동구 이원근 주민복지 국장님으로부터 연락이 와 제 4회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회를 광주에서 열고 싶다며 연락이 왔다. 이 소식을 듣자마자 김재목 회장한테 전달했다. 발달장애인 티볼야구대회 열린지 올해 3회가 되는데 이렇게 광주시 동구에서 관심을 갖고 내년 대회는 지방에서 열었으면 좋겠다는 소식을 받고 얼마나 기뻤는지 모른다.

그동안 열악한 환경에서 발달장애인협회 스텝진들과 임원들이 동분서주하며 뛰어 다녔던 것을 생각하면 이번 일은 기쁜 소식이 아닐 수 없다.

발달장애인 티볼야구대회가 앞으로도 많이 개최되어 이들에게 기쁨과 희망이 되길 기원한다.

"If a man does not give up his dream, it must come true." I am a baseball player. Baseball is my life itself. Even now, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, where he will soon advance to, continue his dream by spreading Korea's advanced baseball.

Through baseball, he received a lot of love. I wanted to give back even a little bit of that love to society. People with developmental disabilities believed that playing baseball could make them happy. The third inning has already ended, with the idea that baseball can be a beacon of hope for their lives.

I have been running so far without giving up hope that I can have a positive impact on people with developmental disabilities by playing a T-ball baseball tournament with them. At first, parents and players had a preconceived notion that they would not play dangerous baseball. T-ball baseball is a sport in which there is no danger or injury, and the number of participants has increased since parents and players have a good perception.

Not only did the number of participating players increase, but the number of organizations that protect and manage them became overwhelming over time. The moment the players hung out with their friends, ran with them, and sweated through T-ball baseball, their eyes and bright smiles were alive. Their closed hearts saw the door open through baseball, and new hope bloomed in it.

That change is still ongoing. In the annual competition, parents are often seen crying their eyes out as they watch their children's games. "I've never seen her smile like that." One mother quietly wiped away her tears. It may be because she had been waiting for the moment to communicate with the world for a long time.

The East Tigers (E.T.) baseball team in Dong-gu, Gwangju, which participated in this competition for the first time, won its first national championship. The Dong-gu E.T. team in Gwangju Metropolitan City participated for the first time, but their skills were truly outstanding, making them one of only three among the developmentally disabled T-ball teams in Korea. Hosanna University in Seoul, Daejeon Team, and Gwangju E.T Team probably form a double wall, I think.

In particular, the Dong-gu E.T. team in Gwangju Metropolitan City is said to consider many things so that people with developmental disabilities can be together as a member of society, with the passionate dedication and support of the head of the Dong-gu District Office Lim Taek and the owner of the E.T. team. No matter how passionate Lim Taek, the head of the Dong-gu District Office, is so passionate that he took a bus from Gwangju to Seoul to participate in this competition.

Less than 15 days have passed since the 3rd Lee Man-soo's developmental disability T-ball baseball tournament, but Lee Won-geun, director of the residents' welfare bureau in Dong-gu, Gwangju City, contacted me. What is still haunting is that the interest of the E.T. team players, executives, and Mayor Lim Taek of Dong-gu District Office in Gwangju City, who participated in the 3rd Lee Man-soo's developmental disability T-ball Baseball Competition, is surprising even to me, a baseball player. Nearly 15 days have passed, but what I still can't forget is that I remember being touched by watching Lim Taek, the head of Dong-gu District Office, and the players shout and run around on the ground with them. Even now, the lingering effects of the 3rd Lee Man-soo's developmental disability T-ball Baseball Competition have not disappeared.

What surprised me when I played the 3rd Lee Man-soo Cup T-ball Baseball Competition for the Developmentally Disabled was that as the years went by, the size of the competition, the teams participating, and the number of executives, parents, and sponsors participating with the players increased. There are likely to be well over 500 players, executives and parents who participated in the 3rd Lee Man-soo Cup Developmentally Disabled T-Ball Baseball Competition, which was held last time.

On June 11, Lee Won-geun, director of the resident welfare bureau in Dong-gu, Gwangju, contacted me saying that he wanted to hold the 4th T-ball baseball tournament for the developmentally disabled in Gwangju. As soon as he heard the news, he delivered it to Chairman Kim Jae-mok. It is the third time this year that the T-ball baseball tournament for the developmentally disabled has been held, and I was so happy to receive the news that Dong-gu, Gwangju, was interested in it and that next year's tournament would be held in the provinces.

Considering that the staff and executives of the Association for the Disabled have been running around in poor environments, this is good news.
We hope that many T-ball baseball tournaments for people with developmental disabilities will be held in the future, giving them joy and hope.
