11월 2일, 손** 코치와 김** 선배와 함께 '열정의 도시'인 현지 교회를 찾았다. 10년 전 비엔티안에서 처음 현지 성도들과 예배드린 이후, 두 번째로 드리는 'L 나라' 예배였다.

10년 전 첫 현지예배의 기억은 아직도 또렷하다. 30도를 훌쩍 넘는 더위, 선풍기 하나 없이 3시간을 드렸던 예배, 땀으로 흠뻑 젖어 불편함을 넘어선 시간이었지만, 성도들의 찬양과 박수는 폭염보다 더 뜨거웠다. 그 열기에 나 역시 어깨가 들썩였고, 손뼉이 절로 따라갔다.

열정의 도시인 교회는 작은 홀 하나였지만 성도들로 가득했다. 그날 모인 사람은 120명. 사회주의 국가에서 이렇게 힘 있게 하나님께 찬양을 올리는 모습을 보며 나는 예배 시간 내내 눈시울이 뜨거웠다. 탄압도 없고 제약도 없는 대한민국에서 평안하게 예배드려온 지난 세월이 오히려 부끄럽게 느껴졌다. 이곳에서 믿음은 때로는 생명을 걸어야 하는 일이었고, 그 위험 속에서도 성도들은 환하게 웃으며 찬송을 불렀다. 그 밝은 얼굴들을 보면서 마음 한쪽이 절로 흔들렸다.

이번에는 실내가 시원했다. 손** 코치와 조경원 단장, 그리고 헐크파운데이션이 기부해 설치한 에어컨 덕분이었다. 조경원 단장이 얼마나 고생했는지 성도들이 직접 이야기했다. 10년 전의 숨막히는 더위와 3시간 예배가 떠올라, 이들의 변화가 더 크게 느껴졌다.

'L 나라'는 목회자가 극히 부족한 나라다. 정식 신학교를 마친 목사는 손에 꼽힐 정도라, 여러 교회를 돌아다니며 예배를 인도한다. 그래서 장로나 연령자가 설교를 맡는 일이 흔하다. 성경책도 넉넉하지 않아 한 권의 성경을 여러 명이 나눠 보는 모습이 자연스럽다. 이런 설명을 듣고 난 뒤 예배를 바라보니, 모든 순간이 더욱 귀하고 감사했다.

더 놀라운 것은 어린아이들이었다. 두 시간이 넘는 예배 동안 단 한 명도 떠들지 않았다. 손** 코치 말대로 'L 나라'는 인구는 적어도 젊은 세대가 많았다. 이날도 학생들이 예배 중심을 이끌었다. 9시에 예배가 시작되자 젊은 학생들이 먼저 나와 율동과 찬양으로 분위기를 열었고, 이어 두 분의 간증, 나이 많은 여성 성도들의 특송이 흘렀다. 우리도 한국 성도들을 대표해 445장 ‘태산을 넘어 험곡에 가도’를 불렀다. 특송 뒤에는 여성 청소년들이 크리스마스를 준비하며 전통 춤으로 하나님께 영광을 올렸고, 성도들은 성경 말씀을 함께 암송한 뒤 중보기도에 합심해 마음을 모았다.

헌금 시간에는 두 개의 헌금함이 놓였다. 빨강은 교회를 위한 헌금, 파랑은 '열정의 도시' 전체와 교단을 위한 헌금이었다. 설교는 한 여성 장로님이 맡았는데, 고린도전서 1장 2~5절 말씀을 전하며 집에서 오랫동안 준비한 흔적이 고스란히 느껴졌다. 이 나라의 성도들은 목사님의 부재를 부족함으로 두지 않고, 스스로 책임을 나누며 공동체를 세우고 있었다.

예배에 참석한 여성 성도들은 모두 'L 나라' 전통 치마를 입고 있었다. 관공서 역시 이 치마를 입지 않으면 출입할 수 없다고 한다. 손** 코치는 이것이 이 나라의 '예의'라고 설명해주었다. 그 단정한 차림만큼이나 성도들의 태도도 참 곱고 진실했다.

예배가 끝나자 DSI 단체에서 준비한 선물들을 성도들에게 나누어주었다. 손** 코치는 평소보다 예배가 훨씬 빨리 끝났다고 했다. 전체 예배와 모든 순서를 합해 두 시간이 조금 넘었을 뿐이었다.

한국에서 당연하게 여겼던 예배가 이곳 'L 나라'에서는 매 순간이 소중함 그 자체였다. 제한된 환경, 부족한 인력, 때로는 위험까지 감수해야 하는 현실 속에서도 흐트러지지 않는 이들의 밝음과 성실함은 내 믿음을 다시 돌아보게 했다. 이날의 예배는 단순한 참석이 아니라, 하나님 앞에서 다시 서게 하는 깊은 깨달음의 시간이었다.

On November 2, I visited the local church, the "City of Passion," with coach Son ** and senior Kim **. It was the second "L Country" service since I first worshipped with local saints in Vientiane 10 years ago.

The memory of the first local service 10 years ago is still clear. The heat of well over 30 degrees Celsius, the service where I spent three hours without a fan, and the time was beyond the inconvenience of being soaked in sweat, but the praise and applause of the saints were hotter than the heat wave. The heat shook my shoulders, and my hands naturally followed.

The church, a city of passion, was full of saints even though it was a small hall. There were 120 people who gathered that day. Seeing such a powerful praise to God in a socialist country, my eyes were tearful throughout the worship period. I felt rather ashamed of the past years of worshiping peacefully in Korea, where there is no oppression and no restrictions. Faith was sometimes a life-threatening task here, and even in the midst of danger, the saints sang hymns with a big smile. Looking at those bright faces, one side of my mind was naturally shaken.

It was cool inside this time. It was thanks to the air conditioner donated by Coach Sohn, Cho Kyung-won, and Hulk Foundation. The saints directly talked about how hard Cho Kyung-won suffered. The breathtaking heat of 10 years ago and the three-hour service reminded me of their change, and their changes were felt even greater.

The "L Country" is a country that has an extreme shortage of pastors. Pastors who have completed formal seminary are one of the most, so they travel to various churches to lead worship services. That's why it's common for elders or older people to preach. There are not enough Bible books, so it's natural to see several people sharing a single Bible. When I watched the service after hearing this explanation, every moment was even more precious and grateful.

What was more surprising was the children. During the two-hour service, not a single person made a noise. As Coach Sohn said, "L Country" had a large population of at least younger generations. Students led the worship center on the day as well. When the service started at 9 o'clock, young students came out first to open the atmosphere with dances and praises, followed by testimonies of the two elderly female believers. We also sang Chapter 445 "Going beyond Taesan to Humgok" on behalf of Korean saints. After the special service, female teenagers honored God with traditional dances while preparing for Christmas, and the saints gathered together in the prayer for the middle step after reciting the Bible together.

During the donation time, two donation boxes were placed. Red was a donation for the church, and blue was a donation for the entire 'city of passion' and the denomination. A female elder was in charge of the sermon, and the traces of his long preparation at home were felt by delivering the words of Corinthians 1: 2-5. The saints of this country did not leave the pastor's absence as a shortage, but were building a community by sharing responsibilities on their own.

All the female saints who attended the service were wearing 'L Country' traditional skirts. Government offices are also said to be prohibited from entering unless they wear this skirt. Coach Son** explained that this was the 'courtesy' of the country. The attitude of the saints was as good and sincere as that of the neat clothes.

At the end of the service, gifts prepared by the DSI group were handed out to the saints. Coach Son** said the service ended much earlier than usual. It was only a little over two hours, including the whole service and all the sequences.

The worship service that was taken for granted in Korea was precious every moment in this 'L country'. The brightness and sincerity of those who are not disturbed even in the reality of limited environment, insufficient manpower, and sometimes risk-taking made me look back on my faith. The service on this day was not just a simple attendance, but a time of deep enlightenment to stand again in front of God.
