< 내가 만난 이치로, 내가 바라본 오타니 >

어제 11월 20일 이른 아침에 최홍섭 아우가 한 편의 칼럼을 보내왔다. 좋은 글이나 도움이 될 만한 이야기가 있으면 꼭 나누고 싶다며 보내주는 아우의 마음이 늘 고맙다. 이날 전해온 글은 본인이 직접 쓴 칼럼이었고, 제목은 ‘오타니를 벤치마킹하겠다면 그의 인생철학부터 읽어라’였다. 가벼운 마음으로 열어보았다가, 처음부터 끝까지 한 호흡에 읽게 되었다.

얼마 전 LA 다저스의 오타니 쇼헤이가 또다시 MVP에 올랐다. 미국에 건너간 뒤 만장일치 MVP만 네 번째라고 하니, 야구 인생을 오래 지켜본 사람으로서도 경이롭다는 말밖에 나오지 않는다. 그런데 아우가 적어낸 글의 초점은 단순한 ‘기록’이 아니었다. 선수로서의 재능을 넘어, 오타니라는 사람이 어떤 마음으로 야구를 대하고, 어떤 자세로 하루를 쌓아 올려왔는지를 보여주는 글이었다.

사람들이 오타니 선수에게 붙이는 수식어는 끝이 없다. 실력과 인성의 겸비, 투타를 모두 하는 이도류, 큰 키와 단정한 외모, 현실의 인간과 만화 속 주인공의 경계를 넘나드는 존재. 돈은 벌되 쓰레기는 주워 담는 습관까지 화제가 될 정도이니, 그의 일상과 선택 하나하나가 사람들에게 기준이 되고 있다는 뜻일 것이다.

최홍섭 아우는 그의 실력보다 인격을 더 크게 이야기했다. 그러면서 자연스레 스즈키 이치로 선수를 예로 들었다. 한·일전에서 했던 과격한 한마디로 대한민국 국민에게는 ‘비호감’ 이미지가 씌워졌지만, 실제 평생의 생활과 운동 태도는 오타니 못지않게 모범적이었다는 내용이었다.

나는 시카고 화이트삭스에서 코치로 있을 때, 시애틀 구단 소속 올스타 선수였던 이치로 선수와 몇 차례 마주한 적이 있다. 그 당시 이치로는 그야말로 다른 세계의 선수였다. 타격, 송구, 수비, 스피드, 센스까지 어느 하나 빠지는 부분이 없었고, 미국에서도 누구도 쉽게 넘볼 수 없는 실력을 갖추고 있었다. 다혈질처럼 보이는 성격조차 그를 평생 한길로 달리게 만든 에너지처럼 느껴졌다. 은퇴한 지금도 자신의 루틴을 그대로 지키며 살아간다고 하니, 운동선수의 삶이 무엇인지 몸으로 보여주는 사람이다.

반면 오타니 선수는 직접 만나본 적은 없다. 하지만 야구를 오래 한 사람들은 안다. 어떤 선수는 굳이 만나지 않아도 보인다. 마음가짐, 경기 후의 태도, 말투, 팬을 대하는 자세, 주변 사람들의 증언… 그런 것들이 하나둘 쌓이면 인품의 두께가 드러난다. 오타니가 그런 선수다. 실력도 실력이지만, 그의 인생철학은 젊은 선수들에게 오래도록 본받을 만한 기준점이 된다.

55년 동안 야구 한길을 걸어오며 수많은 선수를 보아왔다. 그중에서도 이치로와 오타니는 분명 두 개의 봉우리처럼 우뚝 서 있다. 실력의 높이와 성격은 다르지만, 두 사람이 쌓아 올린 삶의 무게와 태도의 깊이는 누구보다 단단하다. 이치로는 꾸준함과 철저함의 상징이었고, 오타니는 재능과 성품이 함께 자라는 드문 선수다.

두 선수를 바라보며 마음속에 한 가지 생각이 머문다. 야구는 결국 사람이 하는 일이라는 것. 기록은 지나면 누군가 깨지만, 그 기록을 향해 걸어가는 태도는 오래 남는다. 그리고 나는 그런 선수들을 보며 다시 한 번 마음을 바로 세운다. 내가 걸어온 길 위에, 그리고 누군가 앞으로 걸어갈 길 위에도, 이 두 봉우리에서 흘러오는 바람이 계속 불어오기를 바란다.

Early yesterday morning, November 20th, my younger brother Choi Hong-seop sent me a column. I'm always grateful for my brother's thoughtfulness in sharing articles he finds insightful or helpful. The piece he sent that day was a column he wrote himself, titled ‘If You Want to Benchmark Ohtani, Start by Reading His Life Philosophy’. I opened it casually, but ended up reading it in one breath from start to finish.

Not long ago, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers was named MVP again. As he is the fourth MVP after moving to the U.S., people say he is amazing even as a person who has watched baseball for a long time. However, the focus of his writing was not just a "record." It was an article that showed how Ohtani treated baseball and how he had built up his day beyond his talent as a player.

The modifiers that people attach to Ohtani are endless. Lee Do-ryu, who combines skills and personality, plays both pitching and hitting, tall height and neat appearance, and a person who crosses the boundaries between real human beings and main characters in cartoons. Since even the habit of making money but picking up trash has become a hot topic, it means that his daily life and choices are becoming the standard for people.

Choi Hong-seop, the younger brother, talked about his personality more than his ability. In the meantime, he naturally took Suzuki Ichiro as an example. In a radical word he said in the Korea-Japan match, the image of "dislike" was put on the Korean people, but the actual lifelong life and athletic attitude were as exemplary as Ohtani.

When I was a coach with the Chicago White Sox, Ichiro, an All-Star player with the Seattle team, faced Ichiro several times. At that time, Ichiro was a player in a truly different world. Hit, throw, defense, speed, and sense were all included, and he had skills that no one in the United States could easily overcome. Even his short-tempered personality felt like the energy that made him go one way throughout his life. Since he says he still lives by following his routine after retirement, he is a person who shows with his body what an athlete's life is.

Ohtani, on the other hand, has never met him in person. However, people who have played baseball for a long time know him. Some players don't seem to have to meet him. His mindset, postgame attitude, way of speaking, how he treats his fans, testimonies from people around him… When such things are stacked one by one, the thickness of character is revealed. Ohtani is such a player. His skills are not only skills, but his philosophy of life is a reference point that young players can learn from for a long time.

I have seen numerous players in baseball for 55 years. Among them, Ichiro and Ohtani stand tall like two peaks. Although the heights and characteristics of their skills are different, the weight and attitude of their lives are stronger than anyone else. Ichiro was a symbol of consistency and thoroughness, and Ohtani is a rare player who grows both talent and character.

Looking at the two players, a thought lingers in my mind. Baseball is what people do after all. After a record passes, someone breaks it, but the attitude of walking toward it lasts a long time. And when I see those players, I straighten my mind again. I hope that the wind from these two peaks will continue to blow on the path that I have walked on, and on the path that someone will walk on.
