< 절대 서두르지마세요 >

11월 1일 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치하고 아침을 하면서 많은 대화를 나누었다. 내가 손사랑 코치에게 간곡하게 부탁한 것은 절대 서두르지마라'고 이야기 했다. 무엇을 이루기 위해 급하게 달려가면 오래가지 못하고 상처만 남고 큰 일을 할 수 없다고 했다. 그리고 지금부터 10년을 내다보고 한발씩 천천히 나아가야 한다.

그리고 건방지지만 동남아로 내려가 지난 11년 동안 경험하고 깨달은 것은 무언가 이루려고 열심히 달려가면 안 된다고 했다. 비록 대 선배지만 김한근 선배한테 간곡하게 부탁했다. '올 한해는 선수들과 재미있게 노세요' '선배님이 처음 가보는 라오스 루앙프라방에서 건강도 챙기고 하루 하루 즐겁게 생활하세요' 그리고 마지막으로 선배님한테 부탁하고 싶은 말은 지금부터 '무언가 하려고 열심히 달려가지마세요' 부탁했다.

내가 이렇게 이야기 하는것도 선배님은 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 그리고 나는 어느 누구보다 선배님의 스타일을 알기에 이렇게 이야기 해도 선배님이 어떻게 선수들을 훈련 시키고 어떻게 가르칠 것인지 눈에 헌하게 보인다.

이들 루앙프라방 선수들이 훈련에 빠지지 않도록 동기부여를 주어야 하고 또 재미있고 지루하지 않도록 훈련시켜야 하는 것에 대해 걱정하지 말라는 것이다. 이미 선배님은 라오스에 들어오기 전에 생소한 야구를 젊은 대학생들이 어떻게 받아 드리고 어떻게 할 것인지 다 공부하고 들어 왔다고 한다. 선배님은 오랜 지도자생활을 했기 때문에 내가 이야기 하지 않아도 어떻게 선수들을 이끌어 가고 어떻게 선수들을 가르치고 어떻게 적극적으로 운동할 수 있을지 먼저 아시는 분이다.

그리고 먼 미래를 위해서라도 지금부터 손사랑 코치와 함께 유소년들과 중,고등학생 그리고 여자선수들까지 하나씩 만들어 가겠단다. 어린선수들에게 야구가 재미있고 무섭지 않다는 것을 보여주기 위해 가장 먼저 티볼부터 먼저 시작하겠단다.

김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치 그리고 나와 함께 모여 오전에 앞으로 선수들을 어떻게 이끌어 갈 것인지에 대해 이야기 나누다보면 어느새 두시간이 훌쩍 지나간다. 지난 11년 동안 동남아로 내려가 이들에게 야구를 전파할 수 있었던 것도 유소년부터 시작해 청년들까지 야구를 통해 인생이 달라진 모습을 직접 보았기 때문이다.

이제 새롭게 시작하는 김한근 선배도 이들과 함께 야구하며 이전에 경험하지 못한 새로운 인생들을 경험할 것이다.


                  < Never Rush >

On November 1st, I had breakfast with Senior Kim Han-geun and Coach Son Sa-rang, sharing many conversations. What I earnestly requested of Coach Son Sa-rang was to 'never rush.' I told him that rushing to achieve something won't last long, only leaves wounds, and prevents you from accomplishing great things. He must look ahead 10 years from now and advance slowly, one step at a time.

And though it may sound presumptuous, what I've experienced and realized over the past 11 years in Southeast Asia is that you shouldn't rush hard to achieve something. Even though he's a senior, I earnestly requested this of Senior Kim Han-geun. 'This year, just have fun with the players.‘ 'Take care of your health in Luang Prabang, Laos—a place you're visiting for the first time—and enjoy each day.’ And finally, what I truly wanted to ask him was: 'From now on, please don't rush headlong trying to accomplish something.'

You know exactly why I'm saying this. And because I understand your style better than anyone, I can clearly see how you'll train and teach the players, even as I speak.

Don't worry about motivating these Luang Prabang players to attend training or about making the training fun and not boring. I hear you studied extensively before coming to Laos about how unfamiliar young university students would receive baseball and how they would approach it. With his long coaching career, he already knows how to lead players, how to teach them, and how to get them actively involved in training—no need for me to tell him.

And for the distant future, he plans to start building things up now, working with Coach Son Sarang to develop youth players, middle and high schoolers, and even female players, one by one. To show young players that baseball is fun and not scary, he'll start with T-ball first.

When Senior Kim Han-geun, Coach Son Sa-rang, and I gather in the morning to discuss how to guide the players forward, two hours fly by before we know it. Over the past 11 years, I was able to go down to Southeast Asia and spread baseball to them precisely because I saw firsthand how baseball changed lives, starting with the youth and extending to the young adults.

Now, Senior Kim Han-geun, starting anew, will also experience new lives he hasn't known before while playing baseball with them.
