< 꿈은 현실로 >

중동·남아시아 최초의 프로야구 리그가 마침내 출범한다는 소식이 전해져 왔다. 인도차이나반도로 내려가 그들과 야구를 오래 지켜본 사람으로서 이 소식이 얼마나 놀랍고 반가운지 말로 다 담기 어렵다.

야구의 공백지대였던 지역에 프로야구 체계가 처음 세워진다는 사실만으로도 새로운 시대가 열리고 있음을 보여준다.

이제 동남아와 인도차이나반도에서 선수생활하는 수많은 젊은 선수들이 앞으로 중동·남아시아의 프로리그로 진출할 수 있는 길이 생긴 것이다. 더 이상 선택지가 막혀 있는 시대가 아니라, 야구를 계속하면 갈 수 있는 새로운 무대가 있다는 확실한 신호다.

야구인으로서 이보다 더 감격스러운 순간이 있을까.

나 역시 동남아시아의 선수들과 함께 뛰고 있는 사람으로서, 이번 리그 출범이 선수들에게 실질적인 목표를 제시하고 앞으로의 방향을 잡아줄 수 있다는 사실이 참 감사하다. 축구장에서 시작된 꿈들이 이제 더 넓은 무대를 바라볼 수 있게 되었기 때문이다.

중동·남아시아의 프로야구 리그가 문을 여는 순간, 동남아 국가들의 야구도 자연스럽게 다음 장을 향해 나아갈 것이다. 오랫동안 작게 이어져 오던 변화들이 이제는 눈으로 확인될 만큼 뚜렷한 흐름이 되고 있다.

중동·남아시아 최초의 프로야구 리그가 마침내 출범한다는 소식을 듣고 나는 또다시 라오스 루앙프라방에서 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치랑 함께 야구를 시작하면서 혼자 조용한 시간에 지나온 과정들을 생각한다.

지난 11년 동안 동남아로 내려가 야구를 전파할 때만 해도 “나는 절대 못 할 것 같다“는 마음이었다. 그러나 지금 또 다시 이런 일을 하라고 한다면 나는 “힘들어도 이 길을 갈 것이다“라는 고백을 할 것 같다. 왜냐하면 이것이 “내게 맡겨진 일“이기 때문이다. 누구나 다 하고 싶어 하는 일은 누구나 다 할 수 있는 일이다. 그러나 누구나 다 하고 싶은 일은 아닌데 내가 꼭 해야겠구나 하는 생각이 든다면 힘들어도 하는 것이 나중에 후회가 없을 것 같다.

지난 11년 동안 동남아와 인도차이나반도로 내려가 야구를 전파할 때만 해도 혼자였다면 절대 여기까지 올 수 없었을 것이다. 늘 강조하는 이야기만 고마운 사람들의 수고와 사랑에 감사를 드린다. 나는 이런 과정들을 뻔히 알면서 다시 라오스 루앙프라방으로 내려가 야구를 시작했다. 왜 이것이 나의 사명이고 내게 맡겨진 일이기 때문이다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 “누구나 다 하고 싶어 하는 일은 누구나 다 할 수 있는 일이다. 그러나 누구나 다 하고 싶은 일은 아닌데 내가 꼭 해야겠구나” 하는 생각이 든다면 힘들어도 하는 것이 나중에 후회가 없기 때문이다.

나는 또다시 라오스 루앙프라방에서 야구를 시작하면서 주위 사람들로부터 가장 열악하고 관광의 도시인 루앙프라방에서 야구 보급시키는 일은 불가능하다는 생각을 버리고 가능하다는 의지를 갖고 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치하고 한번 이들과 부딪혀 보기로 했다.

처음에는 메마른 땅에 물을 부으면 금새 물이 증발해서 마르는 것처럼 의미 없어 보였다. 그러나 지난 11년 동안 인도차이나반도로 왕래하며 젊은 선수들과 같이 생소한 야구를 같이 하는 동안 메마른 땅 같아 보이던 동남아와 인도차이나반도에 야구라는 작은 씨앗이 솟아 나오는 것을 보았다.

그리고 이들 젊은 선수들에게 중동·남아시아 최초의 프로야구 리그는 사막에서 오아시스를 만난것처럼 새로운 희망이 생기게 되었다. 이들 젊은 선수들에게 꿈이 아닌 현실로 다가왔다.

야구는 생각보다 더 멀리, 깊게 퍼질 수 있다. 그리고 우리가 지난 11년 동안 심어온 작은 씨앗들도 언젠가는 자기 자리를 찾아 빛을 낼 것이다.

News has been reported that the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia will finally be launched. As a person who went down to the Indochina Peninsula and watched baseball with them for a long time, it is hard to tell how amazing and nice this news is.

The fact that a professional baseball system is first established in an area that was a blank area of baseball shows that a new era is opening.

Now, a number of young players from Southeast Asia and the Indochina Peninsula can enter the professional leagues in the Middle East and South Asia in the future. It is a clear sign that there is a new stage to go if baseball continues, not an era where options are blocked anymore.

As a baseball player, is there a more emotional moment than this.

As a person who plays with Southeast Asian players, I am very grateful that the launch of the league can present practical goals and set directions for the players. It is because the dreams that began on the soccer field are now able to look at the wider stage.

As soon as professional baseball leagues in the Middle East and South Asia open, baseball in Southeast Asian countries will naturally move toward the next chapter. Changes that have been small for a long time are now becoming a clear trend that can be confirmed with the eyes.

Upon hearing that the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia will finally be launched, I think of the processes that I spent in a quiet time alone when I started playing baseball with senior Kim Han-geun and coach Son Sa-rang in Luang Prabang, Laos.

When I went down to Southeast Asia and spread baseball for the past 11 years, I thought, "I can never do it." However, if I were asked to do this again now, I would confess, "I will go down this road even if it's hard." Because this is "the job entrusted to me." Anyone can do anything that everyone wants to do. However, not everyone wants to do it, and if I feel like I have to do it, I don't think I will regret doing it even if it's hard.

If I had been alone in spreading baseball to Southeast Asia and the Indochina Peninsula for the past 11 years, I would never have made it this far. I would like to thank people for their hard work and love for their stories that I always emphasize. Knowing these processes clearly, I went back to Luang Prabang in Laos and started playing baseball. Because this is my mission and my job. As I mentioned earlier, "Everyone can do anything that everyone wants to do. But not everyone wants to do it, so I have no regrets about doing it even if it's hard if I think I have to do it."

As I started playing baseball again in Luang Prabang, Laos, I decided to coach Kim Han-geun and Son Sa-rang with the will that it was possible to distribute baseball in Luang Prabang, the worst and most tourist city.

At first, it seemed meaningless as if the water evaporated and dried up quickly when water was poured into dry land. However, while traveling to and from the Indochina Peninsula for the past 11 years, I have seen small seeds of baseball spring up in Southeast Asia and the Indochina Peninsula, which looked like dry land while playing unfamiliar baseball with young players.

And for these young players, the first professional baseball league in the Middle East and South Asia created new hope, as if meeting an oasis in the desert. For these young players, it came true, not a dream.

Baseball can spread further and deeper than you think. And even the little seeds we've been planting for the past 11 years will one day find their place and shine.
