삼성라이온즈는 내 젊은 시절, 가장 뜨겁게 달렸던 팀이다. 1982년 프로야구 출범과 함께 창단 멤버로 들어가 16년 동안 푸른 유니폼을 입었다. 그 시절의 나는 늘 활기와 힘으로 가득 차 있었다. 지금도 그때를 떠올리면 가슴 한쪽이 따뜻하게 데워지고, 열정으로 채워졌던 순간들이 생생하게 떠오른다. 삼성라이온즈는 내 삶 속에서 언제나 가장 빛나는 여러 장면 중 하나로 남아 있다.

곧 일흔을 바라보는 나이가 되었어도, 여전히 팀의 이름만 들어도 심장이 먼저 뛴다. 오늘은 대구구장에서 한화이글스와의 플레이오프 4차전이 열린다. 어제 경기에서 삼성라이온즈가 한화에게 4대 5로 아쉽게 패하며 시리즈 전적은 1승 2패가 되었다. 플레이오프는 먼저 세 번 이기는 팀이 다음 라운드로 올라가기 때문에, 오늘 경기는 말 그대로 절박한 승부다.

아침 일찍 사우나에 내려갔더니 단골 멤버들이 유난히 시끌벅적했다. 알고 보니 그중 한 명이 한화 팬이었다. 어제 경기 결과 덕분에 신이 난 얼굴이었다. 나를 포함한 삼성 팬들은 “오늘은 절대 질 수 없다”며 맞받아쳤고, 사우나 안은 마치 대구구장의 연장석처럼 열기로 가득 찼다. 이기는 팀이 저녁을 사기로 하면서, 김이 서린 공간에서 우리는 어린아이처럼 한참을 웃고 떠들었다.

현역 시절이나 지도자 생활을 할 때는 사실 이런 팬들의 열기를 깊이 느끼지 못했다. 늘 경기장 안에서만 살았기 때문이다. 하지만 이제 현장을 떠난 뒤, 비로소 팬의 마음을 알게 되었다. 땀 흘리며 응원하고, 패배에 속상해하며, 다음 경기를 기다리는 그 마음이야말로 야구를 움직이는 진짜 힘이라는 걸 깨달았다.

이제 나 또한 자연스럽게 삼성라이온즈의 팬이 되었다. 우리나라 프로야구가 40년을 넘어섰지만, 창단 이래 한 팀으로 이어진 구단은 삼성라이온즈와 롯데 자이언츠뿐이다. 그래서 야구인으로서 특히 두 팀에게 각별한 애정이 간다.

오늘 저녁, 한국의 가족들뿐 아니라 미국과 라오스, 베트남, 캄보디아, 인도네시아에 있는 가족들 모두가 한마음으로 삼성라이온즈의 승리를 응원할 것이다. 세월이 흘러도, 장소가 달라도, 마음은 하나다.

가을 하늘 아래, 대구구장의 함성이 벌써 마음속에서 들려오는 듯하다. 나 역시 마음속으로 조용히 외칠 것이다.

“나의 청춘, 나의 팀. 삼성라이온즈, 화이팅!”

The Samsung Lions were the team that burned brightest in my youth. Founded alongside the launch of professional baseball in 1982, I wore their blue uniform for 16 years. Back then, I was always brimming with energy and strength. Even now, recalling those days warms a corner of my heart, and the moments filled with passion come vividly to mind. The Samsung Lions remain one of the most brilliant scenes in my life.

Even as I approach seventy, my heart still races just hearing the team's name. Today, the fourth playoff game against the Hanwha Eagles is being held at Daegu Stadium. Yesterday, the Samsung Lions suffered a heartbreaking 4-5 loss to Hanwha, putting the series at 1 win and 2 losses. Since the playoffs advance the team that wins three games first, today's game is literally a do-or-die battle.

When I went down to the sauna early this morning, the regular members were unusually boisterous. Turns out one of them was a Hanwha fan. He was beaming with joy thanks to yesterday's result. The Samsung fans, myself included, fired back, “We absolutely cannot lose today,” and the sauna filled with the same fervor as the extended seating at Daegu Stadium. We agreed the winning team would buy dinner, and in the steam-filled space, we laughed and chattered like children for quite a while.

During my playing days or coaching career, I never truly felt the depth of this fan passion. I lived solely within the confines of the ballpark. But now, having left the field, I finally understand the fan's heart. Sweating while cheering, feeling the sting of defeat, and waiting for the next game—that very spirit is the true driving force behind baseball.

Now, I too have naturally become a Samsung Lions fan. Though Korean professional baseball has surpassed 40 years, only the Samsung Lions and Lotte Giants have remained as the same team since their founding. That's why, as a baseball man, I feel a special affection for these two teams in particular.

Tonight, not only my family in Korea, but also my family in the United States, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia will all cheer with one heart for the Samsung Lions' victory. Though time passes and places change, our hearts remain one.

Under the autumn sky, the roar of Daegu Stadium already echoes in my mind. I too will silently cheer within my heart.
