< 갓을 쓰고 야구하던 시절 >

지난 11월 5일 이른 새벽 6시에 내가 늘 가던 프랑스 레스토랑에 앉아 '탁발' : 라오스의 탁발은 승려들이 아침마다 음식을 구하는 불교 수행의식으로, 특히 루앙프라방 등 주요 도시에서 매일 새벽마다 대규모로 진행하고 있다. 루앙프라방의 탁발 공양은 라오스 전통의 불교의식이다. 승려들이 거리로 나와 신도들에게 공양받아 주변 어려운 사람들과 나누는 의식이다.

이날도 레스토랑에서 커피와 빵을 먹으며 편안하게 나만의 시간을 갖고 있는데 젊은 아가씨 두분이 걸어온다. 그순간 나의 눈을 의심하게 한 것은 다름이 아니라 두 아가씨가 야구복 상의만 입고 걸어온다. 나는 한국사람인지 아니면 외국사람인지 확인하기 위해 두 아가씨가 주문할 때 옆에서 그들이 말하는 것을 들어보니 라오스 아가씨였다. 라오스 아가씨가 야구 유니폼 상의만 입고 루앙프라방 도시를 활보하고 있다는 것은 상상도 할 수 없었다.

이 나라는 '야구'라는 단어 조차도 없는 나라다. 그런데 젊은 아가씨가 야구 유니폼을 입고 시내를 활보하는 것을 보며 야구인으로서 놀라지 않을 수 없다. 라오스 수도인 비엔티안에서는 가끔 젊은 남자들이나 학생들이 야구 유니폼을 입고 다니는 것은 보아서도 여기 루앙프라방에서 젊은 사람들이나 학생들이 야구 유니폼을 입고 다니는 것은 이전까지 한번도 보지 못했다.

비록 이른 새벽시간이지만 야구인의 한사람으로서 희망을 보게 되었다. 루앙프라방은 야구하기에 너무나 척박하고 힘든 곳이다. 손사랑 코치가 2년전 루앙프라방에서 야구를 보급하기 위해 설문조사를 진행한 적이 있었다. 그 설문에는 '당신은 야구라는 스포츠를 아십니까?'라는 설문이었다. 설문결과로 10명 중 9명은 야구를 모른다고 답했고 1명은 골프를 야구로 착각해서 안다고 답변했던 설문있었다. 그만큼 라오스도 지역과 환경에 따라 많이 다르다는 것을 배우고 있다.

김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치가 '수파누옹국립대학교' 학생들에게 야구를 가르치고 있지만 이들 학생들은 태어나 한번도 보지 못한 야구였다. 이렇게 시작했던 것이 어느덧 2년이 되었다. 2년이 되었지만 '수파누옹국립대학교' 야구선수들이 빠르게 야구를 배웠고 생각보다 잘해 야구인 나도 놀라고 김한근 선배도 놀라고 있다.

야구는 단 시일에 성장하는 스포츠가 아니다. 야구는 긴 시간을 두고 가르치고 또 가르쳐야 조금 선수들이 이해하고 따라할 수 있는 스포츠다. 특히 복잡한 야구 룰은 스포츠 중에서도 가장 까다롭고 어렵다. 그래서 야구는 긴 투자를 갖고 어린선수들을 가르치지 않으면 좀처럼 야구를 이해할 수 없을 뿐더러 좋은 기량을 쌓을 수 없다. 새롭게 시작하는 루앙프라방에 김한근 선배를 모시고 와 이들에게 야구를 가르치는 일이 옳은 일인지 많이 의문을 가졌던 것이 사실이다.

그러나 나는 언제나 희망을 갖고 시작하는 스타일이다. 지난 2014년 11월 12일 난생 처음 와보는 라오스에서 야구를 가르칠 때도 나 자신뿐만 아니라 나를 알고 있는 수많은 지인들과 친구들 거기다가 언론까지 모두 미친 짓이라며 거들떠 보지도 않았다. 그렇게 모두가 생각할 때 나는 정말 바보처럼 도전했고 불가능을 가능케 해보고 싶은 마음에 열심히 달려왔다.

지난번에도 글을 썼지만 “쉬운 일은 누구나 선택할 수 있다. 어려운 일은 도전하기가 쉽지 않다. 그러나 그 어려운 일이 세상에서 가장 의미있고 가치 있는 일이라고 한다면, 또 어렵지만 가치 있는 일을 누군가가 해 낸다면 그 일은 결코 다른 이들이 어려운 일이라 생각하지 않고 포기하지 않는 일이 될 것이다. 우리는 이러한 일들을 도전하고 개척해 나가야 한다.

앞에서도 글을 썼지만 쉬운 일은 누구나 다 할 수 있는 일이다. 그러나 어려운 일을 누군가가 해 내면 그때부터 그 일은 어려운 일이라고 불려지지 않는다. 그렇게 되려면 어려워 보이는 그 일에 누군가가 도전하고 길을 개척해야 한다.” 지난 10년전 처음 라오스로 내려갈 때 모두가 불가능하고 도저히 할 수 없는 일이라며 모든 사람들이 비웃고 비아냥 거렸다. '왜 불가능한 일을 하느냐?' '왜 이룰 수 없는 것에 시간을 허비하느냐?' '왜 무모한 짓을 하느냐?' '왜 뻔히 할 수 없는 야구를 그들에게 전하려고 하느냐?' 별의별 이야기를 다 들었던 기억이 있다.

그런데 10년이 지난 지금은 어떤가? 야구의 불모지라고 했던 동남아가 지금 라오스로 시작해 정말 빠르게 주위 이웃 나라로부터 놀라울 정도로 야구가 전파되는 것을 나의 눈으로 직접 확인하고 지켜 보았다.

물론 현실적으로 보면 라오스 루앙프라방에서 야구를 전파하는 일은 또다시 불가능처럼 보일 수 있다. 그러나 10년 전에 했던 것처럼 지금부터 다시 하나부터 시작하면 반드시 라오스 비엔티안처럼 여기 루앙프라방도 야구가 활성화 될 것이라 믿는다.

지난 11월 1일 김한근 선배가 처음 라오스 루앙프라방에 들어와 이날 선배와 손사랑 코치하고 차를 타고 루앙프라방 전체를 답사한 적이 있었다. 손사랑 코치가 직접 운전하며 나에게 보여준 학교가 있었다. 라오스 학제는 초등학교 5학년 그리고 중학교 7학년이다. 그 중학교 학생수가 무려 2000명이 된다고 한다. 거기다가 더 놀라운 사실은 내가 라오스에서 본 중에 가장 큰 운동장을 갖고 있었다. 물론 대학교 운동장 보다는 작지만 루앙프라방과 같이 산악 지형이 많은 지역에서 중,고등학교 치고는 정말 상당히 큰 운동장을 갖고 있었다.

거기다가 이 학교 학생 수가 무려 2000명이라면 청소년부터 시작해 야구를 가르친다면 지금보다 훨씬 빠르게 야구를 보급시킬 수 있고 전달할 수 있을 것 같다. 지금 김한근 감독과 손사랑 코치가 열심히 달리면서 이 학교 교장선생님을 만나 학생들에게 야구를 가르칠 수 있도록 추진하고 있다.

그리고 중학교를 졸업한 학생들이 수파누옹국립대학교에 입학을 한다면 14세부터 24세까지 10년이라는 시간동안 루앙프라방에서 야구를 배울 수 있는 기회가 주어진다.

만약 이 학교 학생들에게 야구를 가르칠 수 있다면 지금 가르치고 있는 '수파누옹국립대학교' 학생들보다 훨씬 빠른 속도로 야구를 전달할 수 있다. 지금 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치와 이 문제를 놓고 열심히 뛰어 다니고 있다.

다시 되돌아가 이날 이른 새벽시간에 라오스 아가씨가 자기들만의 전통 옷을 입지 않고 야구복 윗도리를 입고 시내를 활보한다는 것은 이 도시에도 희망이 있음을 보게 되었다. 비록 아가씨들이 야구 유니폼이 어떤 의미인지 잘 모르지만 이들이 유니폼을 입었다는 것 하나로만 해도 야구인으로서 절대 낙심하거나 실망할 것이 없음을 보게 되었다.

1904년전 필립 질레트 선교사가 대한민국에 들어와 YMCA로부터 야구를 가르칠 때만 해도 우리나라 양반들은 갓을 쓰고 있었던 시절이다. 물론 양반이 아닌 사람들은 갓을 쓰지 않았지만... 이 시절만 해도 야구복이 어떻게 생긴것인지 아는 사람 하나 없었고 이 당시 대한민국에도 '야구'라는 단어 조차도 없었던 시절이다.

그들이 만들어 준 유니폼을 입고 야구를 시작했다. 이들도 마찬가지다. 비록 야구가 무엇이고 어떻게 하는지 잘 모르지만 앞으로 먼 훗날 이들 젊은이들이 야구를 통해 꿈을 갖게 되고 야구로 인해 세상의 문을 두드릴 그날도 멀지 않았다.

나는 이른 새벽시간에 커피 한잔을 마시며 라오스 젊은 선수들이 찬란한 유니폼을 입고 당당하게 아시아대회와 세계 무대를 누빌 그날을 상상해 본다.


                                                  <When I was playing baseball with a hat on>

Sitting at my usual French restaurant at 6 a.m. on November 5, "Takbal" : Laos' Takbal is a Buddhist practice ritual in which monks seek food every morning, especially in major cities such as Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang's Takbal offering is a traditional Buddhist ritual in Laos. It is a ritual in which monks come out to the streets and receive offerings from believers and share them with those in need.

On this day, I was having my own time while eating coffee and bread at the restaurant, and two young ladies walked in. At that moment, it was none other than the two ladies who doubted my eyes, walking in a baseball uniform top. When I heard the two ladies ordering to see if they were Korean or foreign, I heard them talking next to me and it was a Lao lady. It was impossible to imagine that a Lao lady was walking around Luang Prabang city wearing only a baseball uniform top.

This country doesn't even have the word 'baseball'. But as a baseball player, I can't help but be surprised to see a young lady strut down the city wearing a baseball uniform. In Vientiane, the capital of Laos, sometimes young men and students wear baseball uniforms, but never before have young people or students wear baseball uniforms here in Luang Prabang.

Even though it is early in the morning, I saw hope as one of the baseball players. Luang Prabang is a very barren and difficult place to play baseball. Coach Son Sa-rang conducted a survey two years ago to promote baseball in Luang Prabang. The questionnaire was 'Do you know the sport of baseball?' As a result of the survey, 9 out of 10 answered that they did not know baseball and 1 answered that they knew golf because they mistook it for baseball. As such, Laos is also learning that it is very different depending on region and environment.

Senior Kim Han-geun and coach Son Sa-rang teach baseball to students at Supanuong National University, but these students have never seen it since they were born. It's already been two years since they started like this. Although it's been two years, the baseball players at Supanuong National University have learned baseball quickly, and they are better than expected, so I am surprised and Kim Han-geun is surprised.

Baseball is not a sport that grows in a short time. Baseball is a sport that players can understand and imitate only when they teach and teach over a long period of time. In particular, complex baseball rules are the most difficult and difficult among sports. That is why baseball rarely understands baseball and builds good skills unless it teaches young players with a long investment. It is true that Kim Han-geun was brought to the new Luang Prabang and there was a lot of doubt whether it was the right thing to teach baseball to them.

However, I am the type to always start with hope. When I taught baseball in Laos, which was my first time in my life on November 12, 2014, not only myself, but also my numerous acquaintances and friends who knew me, and the media all said it was crazy. So, when everyone thought, I really challenged myself like an idiot, and I ran hard to make the impossible possible.

As I wrote last time, "Everyone can choose easy things. Difficult things are not easy to challenge. However, if someone accomplishes another difficult but valuable task in the world, it will never be something that others do not consider difficult and will not give up. We must challenge and pioneer these tasks.

As I have already written, anyone can do anything easy. However, if someone does something difficult, it is not called a difficult task from then on. In order for that to happen, someone has to challenge and pave the way for something that seems difficult." When I first went down to Laos 10 years ago, everyone laughed at and mocked me, saying that it was impossible and impossible for everyone to do. "Why are you doing the impossible?" "Why are you wasting your time on something that cannot be achieved?" "Why are you doing something reckless?" "Why are you trying to pass on baseball to them that cannot be clearly done?" I remember hearing all kinds of stories.

But what about 10 years later? Southeast Asia, which was called the barren land of baseball, started with Laos and watched the amazing spread of baseball from neighboring countries really quickly with my own eyes.

Of course, in reality, spreading baseball in Luang Prabang, Laos, may seem impossible again. However, I believe that if we start from now on again, as we did 10 years ago, baseball will surely be activated here in Luang Prabang, just like Vientiane, Laos.

On November 1st, Kim Han-geun first entered Luang Prabang in Laos, where he coached Son Sa-rang and toured the entire Luang Prabang in a car. There was a school that Coach Son Sa-rang showed me while driving. Laos' interdisciplinary system is in the 5th grade of elementary school and the 7th grade of middle school. It is said that the number of middle school students is as many as 2,000. What's more surprising is that it had the largest playground I've ever seen in Laos. Of course, it was smaller than a university playground, but it had a very large playground for middle and high school in areas with many mountainous terrain, such as Luang Prabang.

In addition, if the school has as many as 2,000 students, if they start with teenagers and teach baseball, they will be able to spread and deliver baseball much faster than now. Now, coach Kim Han-geun and coach Son Sa-rang are running hard to meet the principal of the school and teach baseball to students.

And if students who graduated from middle school enter Supanuong National University, they will be given the opportunity to learn baseball in Luang Prabang for 10 years from the age of 14 to 24.

If I could teach baseball to the students at this school, I could convey the game much faster than I am teaching the students at Suphanburi National University. Right now, Senior Kim Han-geun, Coach Son Sa-rang, and I are running around tirelessly working on this issue.

Going back to that day, seeing the Laotian girls strutting through the city streets in baseball jerseys instead of their traditional attire, even in the early morning hours, showed me that hope exists in this city too. Even though the girls may not fully understand the meaning behind the baseball uniform, the mere fact that they wore it proved to me, as a baseball person, that there is absolutely no reason to be discouraged or disappointed.

Back in 1904, when missionary Philip Gillette first came to Korea and taught baseball through the YMCA, our country's yangban aristocrats still wore traditional hats. Of course, commoners didn't wear hats... But even then, no one knew what a baseball uniform looked like, and the word ‘baseball’ itself didn't even exist in Korea at that time.

They began playing baseball wearing the uniforms provided for them. These young people are no different. Though they may not fully understand what baseball is or how to play it, the day is not far off when these young men will find dreams through baseball and use it to knock on the doors of the world.

Early in the morning, sipping a cup of coffee, I imagine the day when young Laotian players, wearing brilliant uniforms, will proudly take the field at the Asian Games and on the world stage.
