< 다시 한번 그 날을 위해 >

2014년 SK와이번스 팀에서 감독생활 끝내고 그해 11월 12일 야구 불모지인 라오스로 들어와 야구를 보급하게 되었다. 이렇게 시작했던 것이 벌써 올해가 11년째가 된다. 지난 11년을 되돌아 보면 정말 다사다난 했던 시간들이다.

그럼에도 지난 11년 동안 야구인으로서 라오스 최초 야구협회를 설립했고 또 국가대표를 모집해 2023년 중국항저우아시안게임에서 라오스 야구 사상 첫승을 올렸다. 라오스 단체경기에서 야구가 본선에 올라간 것은 라오스 스포츠 생긴 이래 구기종목에서 야구가 처음이라 하니 야구인으로서 감격스러울 뿐이다.

거기다가 지난 2019년 2월부터 시작한 야구장 공사가 10개월 동안 이어진 공사로 인해 드디어 2020년 1월초에 라오스 최초로 야구장이 완공이 되었다. 이것으로 인해 2022년 라오스에서 국제대회가 열렸다. 그해 국제대회에서 라오스 팀이 준우승했다.

이렇게 지난 시간들을 되돌아 보면 지난 11년 동안 얼마나 많은 일들이 있었는지 모른다. 라오스 국가대표 선수들이 어린시절부터 꿈을 갖게 된 첫번째는 이들 선수들이 11년 동안 무려 한국을 7번이나 들어왔다. 꿈이 없던 선수들이 야구를 통해 꿈을 갖게 되었고 희망이 없던 선수들이 한국의 발전상을 보며 새롭게 희망을 꿈꾸는 선수들이 되었다.

이런 모든것들이 지난 55년 동안 오로지 한길로 달려온 야구인으로서 보람을 느끼는 순간이다. 처음 2014년 11월 12일 라오스 들어갈 때만 해도 라오스 나라에 야구를 보급 시킨다는 것은 솔직히 불가능처럼 보였다. 그렇게 생각했던 것이 지금은 아시아대회뿐만 아니라 작은 동남아 나라와의 경기에서도 충분히 이길 수 있는 강한 팀이 되었다.

열악하고 최빈국인 라오스 땅에 지난 2020년도에 최초로 야구장이 생길 것이라곤 어느 누구도 상상하지 못한 일이다. 지금은 동남아에서도 빠지지 않는 멋지고 아름다운 야구장을 갖게 되었다.

이제 다시 라오스 루앙프라방에 제 2의 야구장을 구상하고 있다. 과연 그것이 언제가 될지 모르나 제 2의 야구장을 루앙프라방에 생기기를 꿈꾸어 본다. 처음 라오스 비엔티안에서 야구장 설립할 때도 혼자서 감당할 수 없을 때 많은 사람들의 헌신과 사랑 그리고 아낌 없는 기부와 봉사가 없었더라면 야구장을 건립할 수 없었다.

지난 2020년도에 라오스 최초로 비엔티안에 야구장을 건립했다면 여기 루앙프라방에도 반드시 야구장을 만들 수 있다는 꿈을 갖고 지금부터 열심히 달려가려고 한다. 아이들에게 야구를 통해 꿈과 희망을 전함에 있어 내가 지금까지 받아 온 사랑을 미약하나마 이들에게 전할 수 있어 야구인의 한사람으로서 보람을 느낀다.

일흔을 바라보는 나는 앞으로 야구 발전을 위해 할 수 있는 시간이 점점 줄어들고 있다. 다시한번 많은 야구인들이나 야구를 사랑하는 팬이나 일반 사람들이 다 함께 힘을 모아준다면 다시한번 기적을 일구어 낼 수 있다.

야구의 불모지인 라오스 땅에 야구장을 짓는다는 것은 불가능처럼 생각했던 수많은 사람들이 라오스 야구장이 2020년도에 완공이 되었을 때도 아무도 믿지 않았다. 이렇게 어려움 속에서도 포기할 수 없었던 단 한가지 이유가 있었다. 그것은 다름이 아니라 어렵게 야구하는 라오스 선수들을 생각하면 절대 도중에 포기할 수가 없었다.

지난 2020년도에 라오스 비엔티안에 야구장이 완공이 되기까지 가장 고마운 분은 단연 라오스 선수들이다. 지금도 나의 뇌리에서는 잊혀지지 않는다. 야구장 건립으로 인해 제대로 훈련도 하지 못하고 또 쉬지도 못한 선수들이 방과후에 야구장으로 달려가 자기 일처럼 일을 했다. 매일 40도에 육박하는 무더운 날씨에도 많은 선수들이 구슬땀을 흘려가며 불평하지 않고 야구장을 지을 수 있었던 것은 라오스 최초의 야구장은 앞으로 자기들 것이라는 생각에 누가 먼저라 할 것 없이 손을 걷고 무거운 장비를 나르면서 일을 했던 것이다.


나는 잘 알고 있다. 야구장은 그저 지어지지 않는다는 것을 지난 2020년도에 절실하게 깨닫게 되었다. 열악환 환경에서 야구하는 라오스 선수들에게는 야구장은 그야말로 꿈의 구장이었을 것이다. 평생 한길로 달려온 야구인으로서 작으나마 이들에게 평생 야구로 받은 사랑을 조금이나마 나누어 주기 위해 다시한번 또 무모한 도전을 시작하려고 한다.

지금까지 숫한 일들을 해쳐 나오듯이 앞으로 있을 루앙프라방 야구장을 위해 지금부터 하나씩 개척해 나간다면 또 다시 놀라운 기적을 만들어 갈 수 있지 않을까? 생각하고 있다.


내가 늘 이야기 했듯이 “쉬운 일은 누구나 다 할 수 있다. 어려운 일은 도전하기 쉽지 않다. 그러나 어려운 일을 누군가가 해 내면 그때부터 그 일은 어려운 일이라고 불리지 않는다. 그렇게 되려면 어려워 보이는 그 일에 누군가가 도전하고 길을 개척해야 한다. 그 개척자가 바로 여러분들입니다.”


라오스 야구장만 보면 예전에 썼던 글들이 또다시 생각이 난다. ‘그것을 만들면, 그가 올 것이다(If you build it, he will come)’라는 글이다. 정말 거짓말처럼 야구장이 생기고부터 라오스는 지금 야구의 붐이 일고 있다. 학생들뿐만 아니라 일반인까지 거기다가 가장 많은 관심을 갖고 있는 것이 라오스 정부다.

앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 여기 루앙프라방에 야구장을 만들면 라오스 젊은 청소년들이 야구장을 찾을 것이다.

After finishing his coaching career with the SK Wyverns in 2014, he moved to Laos, a barren baseball area, on Nov. 12 of that year, and distributed baseball. This year marks the 11th year since the beginning. Looking back on the past 11 years, these have been very eventful.

Nevertheless, he established Laos' first baseball association as a baseball player for the past 11 years and recruited a national team to earn his first win in Laos baseball history at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games in China. I am just thrilled as a baseball player because it is the first time baseball has made the finals in ball games since Laos' sports were founded.

In addition, due to the 10-month-long construction of the ballpark, which began in February 2019, the first baseball stadium in Laos was finally completed in early January 2020. This led to an international competition in Laos in 2022. The Laos team won the runner-up prize at the international competition that year.

Looking back on these past times, we don't know how much has happened in the past 11 years. The first time Laos national team players had a dream since childhood was when they came to Korea seven times in 11 years. Players who had no dreams came to have dreams through baseball, and players who had no hope became players who dreamed of hope anew as they saw Korea's development.

All of these are rewarding moments as baseball players who have been running for the past 55 years. When I first entered Laos on November 12, 2014, it seemed honestly impossible to distribute baseball to Laos. What I thought was that now it has become a strong team that can win not only the Asian Games but also the small Southeast Asian country.

No one could have imagined that the first baseball stadium would be built in 2020 in Laos, a poor and poorest country. Now we have a wonderful and beautiful baseball stadium that is not missing in Southeast Asia.

Now, we are thinking of a second ballpark in Luang Prabang, Laos. I don't know when it will be, but I dream of creating a second ballpark in Luang Prabang. Even when the ballpark was first established in Vientiane, Laos, it could not have been built without the dedication, love, generous donations and service of many people when they could not handle it alone.

If I built a baseball stadium in Vientiane for the first time in Laos in 2020, I will run hard from now on with the dream that I can make a baseball stadium here in Luang Prabang. In conveying dreams and hopes to children through baseball, I feel rewarded as a baseball player because I can convey the love I have received so far to them, even if it is weak.

Looking at 70, I have less and less time to develop baseball in the future. Once again, if many baseball players, baseball-loving fans, and ordinary people join forces together, I can achieve a miracle once again.

Many people, who thought it was impossible to build a baseball stadium on the barren land of Laos, believed no one when the Laos baseball stadium was completed in 2020. There was only one reason why I couldn't give up despite such difficulties. It was none other than that, considering the Laos players who played hard baseball, I could never give up on the way.

Laos players are by far the most grateful person until the completion of the baseball stadium in Vientiane, Laos, in 2020. Even now, it is still unforgettable in my mind. Due to the construction of the ballpark, players who could not train properly and could not rest ran to the ballpark after school and worked as if it was their job. Even in the hot weather of nearly 40 degrees every day, many players were able to build the ballpark without complaining by sweating because they thought that Laos' first ballpark would be their own in the future, so they worked by walking their hands and carrying heavy equipment.I am well aware. Back in 2020, I desperately realized that baseball stadiums cannot just be built. For Laos players who play baseball under poor conditions, the baseball stadium must have been a dream stadium. As a baseball player who has worked hard all his life, I am going to start a reckless challenge again to share a little bit of the love I have received from baseball throughout my life.

Just as I've been harming many things so far, wouldn't I be able to make another amazing miracle if I pioneer one by one for the future Luang Prabang baseball stadium? I'm thinking.As I always said, "Everyone can do easy things. Difficult things are not easy to challenge. However, if someone does something difficult, it is not called a difficult task from then on. In order to do so, someone must challenge and pave the way for the seemingly difficult task. You are the pioneers."When I look at the Laos baseball stadium, I think of the writings I wrote before again. It is said, "If you build it, he will come." Like a lie, Laos has seen a boom in baseball since the creation of the baseball stadium. It is the Lao government that is most interested in not only students but also the general public.

As mentioned earlier, if you build a ballpark here in Luang Prabang, young Laotian teenagers will visit the ballpark.
