< 스승의 한마디 >

나는 여느 친구들보다 야구를 늦게 시작했다. 거기다가 야구를 전혀 모른 상태에서 야구를 시작했으니 그 시간들이 얼마나 힘들고 어려운 세월을 보냈는지 모른다. 잠시 앞에서 언급했지만 나는 야구를 중학교 1학년 여름부터 시작했다.

이렇게 야구를 늦게 시작하다보니 고정적인 포지션이 없어 늘 라이트 필드에서 수비했다.이 당시 야구를 제일 못하는 선수가 서있는 위치가 라이트 필드였다. 중학교 시절 외야수 , 투수 , 포수를 거치며 야구의 명문인 대구상고에 진학하게 되었다. 대구상고 1학년 말에 모교 출신인 정동진 감독님이 부임하셨다.

정동진 감독님이 대구상고에 부임하자마자 나 또한 이때부터 정상적으로 포수에 전념할 수 있었다. 정동진 감독님이 대구상고에 부임하고부터 나의 야구인생은 새로운 전기를 맞게 되었다.

많은 세월이 흘렀음에도 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것이 대한민국 최고의 명포수로 활약했던 정동진 감독님이 그 당시 고등학교 1학년 초보 포수였던 나에게 이런 질문을 하셨다. '야구일지'를 쓰냐? 고 물어보셨다. 솔직히 이 당시만 해도 야구일지가 무엇인지 잘 몰랐다. 힘든 연습을 마치고 저녁에 노트를 펼 생각도 못해봤는데 감독님께서 당부를 하셨다. “지금부터 일기와 야구일지를 매일 쓰라”는 것이다. 존경하던 감독님의 당부에 그날 이후 지금까지 50년 넘도록 하루도 거르지 않고 일기와 야구일지를 쓰고 있다. 현역시절에 야간경기가 아무리 늦게 끝나도 노트에 그날의 경기내용과 느낀 점을 빼곡히 적어둔 노트들은 나에게 보물과 같다.

예순 살이 넘어 일흔 살 되어가는 지금도 정동진 감독님이 고등학교 시절에 해주신 말씀을 잊지 않고 지금도 진행형이다. 이런 좋은 습관을 가지게 해 주신 정동진 감독님께 지금도 늘 감사한 마음이다. 감독님은 일기뿐만 아니라 운동선수여도 늘 책을 가까이 하라고 부탁하셨고 제자들에게 당신께서 직접 본을 보이셨다.

“일기 쓰고 공부하라“는 너무나 평범한 것 같지만 그 안에 담겨있는 성실과 노력 그리고 성장의 가치를 가르쳐준 그 한마디가 많은 세월이 흘렀음에도 나의 삶에서 나에게 가장 기억에 남는다.

나도 현장에 나와 전국으로 다니면서 어린선수들에게 늘 당부한다. 아무리 힘들고 어렵더라도 꼭 명심하고 지켜야 하는 것이 일기와 야구일지는 반드시 써야 한다. 그리고 아무리 힘들더라도 책은 손에서 놓지 않아야 한다. 왜냐하면 운동하면서 놓친 여러가지들이 책속에 있기 때문이다. 일흔살을 바라보는 지금도 나는 책을 놓지 않고 있다. 왜냐하면 지난 55년 동안 한길로 달려오면서 야구로 인해 놓친것들이 너무 많아 간접적으로 인생과 삶을 배울 수 있는 것이 책 밖에 없기 때문이다. 아무리 많은 세월이 흘러도 지금도 만나는 후배들에게 똑 같은 이야기를 하게 된다.

                < A Word from the Coach >

I started playing baseball later than most of my friends. On top of that, I began playing without knowing anything about the game, so you can imagine how tough and challenging those early years were. As I mentioned briefly earlier, I started playing baseball in the summer of my first year of middle school.

Starting so late meant I never had a fixed position and always played defense in right field. Back then, right field was where the worst player stood. During middle school, I played outfield, pitcher, and catcher before advancing to Daegu Commercial High School, a baseball powerhouse. At the end of my freshman year at Daegu Commercial, Coach Jeong Dong-jin, an alumnus of the school, was appointed.

As soon as Coach Jeong Dong-jin arrived at Daegu Commercial High School, I was finally able to focus solely on catching. From the moment Coach Jeong Dong-jin took over at Daegu Commercial High School, my baseball life entered a new chapter.

Even after all these years, I still vividly remember something Coach Jeong Dong-jin, who had been Korea's top catcher, asked me back then. I was just a freshman high school catcher, a complete beginner. “Do you keep a baseball journal?” he asked. Honestly, back then, I didn't even know what a baseball journal was. I never imagined opening a notebook after grueling practice sessions, but the coach insisted: “From now on, write a diary and a baseball journal every single day.” Since that day, following the request of the coach I respected, I have kept a diary and a baseball journal without missing a single day for over 50 years. Even when night games ended late during my playing days, I filled notebooks with detailed accounts of the game and my reflections. Those notebooks are treasures to me.

Now, in my sixties approaching seventy, I still remember the words Coach Jeong Dong-jin gave me in high school. I continue to live by them. I remain eternally grateful to Coach Jeong Dong-jin for instilling this valuable habit in me. The coach urged us not only to keep diaries but also to always keep books close, even as athletes, and he personally set an example for his students.

“Write your diary and study” may sound like an ordinary phrase, but the sincerity, effort, and value of growth it embodies are what I remember most vividly in my life, even after so many years have passed.

Now, traveling nationwide to the field, I constantly remind young players: No matter how tough or difficult it gets, you must remember and keep two things: you absolutely must write your diary and your baseball log. And no matter how hard it gets, you must never let go of a book. Because the many things you miss while training are found within books. Even now, approaching seventy, I still haven't put down books. Because over the past 55 years, racing down a single path, I missed out on so much through baseball that books are the only way I can indirectly learn about life and living. No matter how many years pass, I still find myself telling the same story to the juniors I meet today.

“Be sure to write your diary, keep your baseball log, read books, and study.”
