현장을 떠난 지 올해로 11년째. 그러나 나는 여전히 동남아와 국내 곳곳을 다니며 재능기부를 이어가고 있다. 유소년들과 함께할 때면 늘 느낀다. 아이들이 자라서 야구팬이 되고, 그 아이들을 따라 부모님이 다시 야구장을 찾는다. 그렇게 한 가족이, 한 세대가 야구를 통해 이어진다. 나는 이런 모습을 지난 10년 동안 미국에서 지켜봤다. 그곳에서는 야구가 단순한 스포츠가 아니라 세대를 잇는 문화이자 삶이었다.

지난번 준플레이오프 1차전 삼성라이온즈 팀과 SSG 렌더스 팀과의 문학구장에서 함께한 레전드 선·후배들이야말로 그 문화의 씨앗이다. 자주 이런 자리를 만들어간다면, 우리나라에서도 자연스럽게 세대가 이어질 것이다. 레전드들이 직접 뛰지 않아도 괜찮다. 단지 구장에 ‘존재한다’는 것만으로도, 팬들은 환호하고 아이들은 꿈을 꾼다. 미국에서도 그것이 야구 문화의 큰 힘이었다. 과거와 현재, 그리고 미래가 같은 공간에서 만나는 것 — 그 때 야구장은 단순한 경기장이 아니라 ‘역사가 살아 있는 교실’이 된다. 진정한 ‘레전드의 역할’이란 바로 이런 것일 것이다.

야구가 이제는 한 세대의 전유물이 아니라, 온 세대가 함께 즐기는 문화가 되었음을 요즈음 프로야구를 보며 많이 느낀다. 지난 55년 동안 야구를 통해 사회에 조금이라도 환원할 수 있었던 것이 내겐 큰 감사이며, 또 행복이었다. 티볼, 소프트볼, 사회인 야구까지 — 이제는 누구나 참여할 수 있는 방식으로 확장된 야구의 세계를 바라보며, 야구를 통해 세상이 조금 더 따뜻해질 수 있다는 믿음이 점점 또렷해진다.

야구는 단지 공 하나, 배트 하나의 이야기가 아니다. 그것은 세대를 잇는 다리이며, 사람을 잇는 마음이다. 그리고 오늘도 나는 그 다리 위에서, 다시 한 번 야구의 아름다움을 느낀다.

It's been 11 years since I left the field. Yet I still travel throughout Southeast Asia and Korea, continuing my volunteer coaching. Whenever I'm with young players, I always feel it: children grow up to become baseball fans, and their parents follow them back to the ballpark. That's how one family, one generation, connects through baseball. I witnessed this very scene over the past decade in the United States. There, baseball was not merely a sport, but a culture bridging generations and a way of life.

The legendary seniors and juniors who gathered at Munhak Stadium for the first game of the semi-playoffs between the Samsung Lions and SSG Landers are the very seeds of that culture. If we create such opportunities more often, generations will naturally connect in our country too. It doesn't matter if the legends aren't playing themselves. Just their presence in the stadium makes fans cheer and children dream. That was a major strength of baseball culture in America too. When the past, present, and future meet in the same space—that's when the ballpark becomes not just a stadium, but a ‘living history classroom’. This is surely the true ‘role of a legend’.

Watching professional baseball these days, I often feel that baseball is no longer the exclusive domain of one generation, but has become a culture enjoyed by all generations together. Being able to give back to society, even a little, through baseball over the past 55 years has been a great source of gratitude and happiness for me. From T-ball and softball to adult leagues—watching baseball expand into a world accessible to everyone, my belief grows clearer that baseball can make the world a little warmer.

Baseball isn't just about a ball and a bat. It's a bridge connecting generations, a heart connecting people. And today, standing on that bridge once more, I feel the beauty of baseball anew.
