< 김한근 선배님의 홀로서기 >

10월 31일, 드디어 김한근 선배와 함께 라오스 루앙프라방으로 들어간다.

나는 지난 11년 동안 라오스와 베트남, 캄보디아, 인도네시아를 오가며 야구를 전하고 그들과 함께 살아왔다. 그러나 이번 여정은 다르다. 선배님께는 생애 처음 맞이하는 낯선 이국땅이다. 언어도, 문화도, 음식도 전혀 익숙하지 않은 곳으로 들어간다는 것은 말처럼 쉬운 일이 아니다.

그동안 여러 후배들을 파견해왔지만, 선배를 외국으로 모시는 것은 이번이 처음이다. 후배를 보낼 때도 늘 마음이 무거웠는데, 평생 함께 야구 인생을 걸어온 선배님께 부탁을 드린다는 것은 그 무게가 다르다. 그런데도 선배는 오히려 나를 안심시키듯 기쁘게 받아주셨다. 중학교 시절부터 함께 걸어온 인연 덕분에 나 역시 마음이 한결 놓인다.

31일부터는 고된 일정이 기다리고 있다. 그러나 선배는 이 날을 위해 단 하루도 거르지 않고 웨이트 트레이닝으로 몸을 준비하셨다. 선수와 지도자 시절 내내 강인한 체력으로 누구보다 성실하게 살아오셨고, 그 힘의 원천은 언제나 “야구를 통해 젊은 이들을 돕고 싶다”는 사랑이었다.

솔직히 선배님께는 이번 길이 쉽지 않다. 뒤늦은 나이에 홀로서기를 해야 하고, 식사부터 잠자리까지 스스로 해결해야 한다. 처음 겪는 문화와 생활이 버겁게 다가올지도 모른다. 그러나 나는 걱정보다는 믿음이 크다. 왜냐하면 선배는 수많은 역경을 지나오며 언제나 더 큰 길을 열어왔기 때문이다.

라오스에서 맞이할 삶은 젊은 시절에는 상상조차 하지 못했던 길일 것이다. 설렘과 불안이 교차하겠지만, 선배님은 분명 새로운 보람을 발견하리라 믿는다. 무엇보다 이번 헌신은 단순한 파견이 아니라, 인생의 남은 시간을 ‘의미와 가치’로 채우려는 걸음이기 때문이다.

재능을 나누는 일은 남을 살리는 일이면서, 동시에 자신을 더 깊은 행복으로 이끄는 길이다. 나는 선배님이 라오스에서 만날 새로운 하루하루가, 남은 인생의 가장 빛나는 시간이 되기를 간절히 바란다.


  < Senior Kim Han-geun's First Solo Journey >

On October 31st, I finally enter Luang Prabang, Laos, alongside Senior Kim Han-geun.

For the past 11 years, I've traveled back and forth between Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, spreading baseball and living alongside them. But this journey is different. For Senior Kim, it's his first time stepping foot on unfamiliar foreign soil. Entering a place where the language, culture, and food are entirely unfamiliar is no easy feat.

While I've sent many juniors abroad before, this is the first time I'm taking a senior overseas. Sending juniors always weighed heavily on my heart, but asking a senior who's walked this baseball path with me my entire life carries a different kind of weight. Yet, Senior Han-geun welcomed the request with such joy, as if to reassure me. Thanks to the bond we've shared since middle school, I too feel considerably more at ease.

A grueling schedule awaits starting the 31st. Yet, for this day, he prepared his body through weight training without skipping a single day. Throughout his career as both a player and coach, he lived with unwavering dedication and formidable stamina, fueled by a love that always stemmed from his desire to “help young people through baseball.”

Honestly, this path won't be easy for him. He must stand on his own at a later stage in life, handling everything from meals to lodging independently. The unfamiliar culture and lifestyle might feel overwhelming at first. Yet my faith outweighs my worries. Because he has always forged greater paths through countless adversities.

The life he will embrace in Laos is one he likely never imagined in his youth. Though excitement and anxiety will intertwine, I firmly believe he will discover new fulfillment. Above all, this dedication is not merely an assignment; it is a step to fill the remaining years of his life with ‘meaning and value’.

Sharing one's talents is an act of saving others, while simultaneously leading oneself to deeper happiness. I sincerely hope that each new day you encounter in Laos becomes the most radiant time of your remaining life.
