< 나를 살린 한마디 >

1997년 삼성 라이온즈 팀에서 16년 간의 선수생활을 끝내고 그 다음 해인 1998년도에 미국으로 들어갔다. 미국 첫해인 1998년도에는 클리블랜드 인디언스 싱글A팀에서 지도자생활을 했고 그 다음해인 1999년도에는 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀인 트리플A에 들어가 지도자생활 했다.

2000년도에 MLB인 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에 들어갔다. 미국에 들어간지 딱 3년 만에 메이저리그 코치가 되었다. 이때의 감격은 세월이 많이 지난 지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 미국에 들어간지 2년째인 시카고 화이트 삭스 트리플A 팀에서 모든 생활을 다 끝내고 한국으로 들어가기 위해 사랑하는 아내와 애들하고 짐을 챙기고 있는데 나의 친구이자 에이전트인 '앤디김'한테 연락이 와 “만수야 너 시카고 화이트 삭스 메이저리그에 들어가게 되었다”는 말에 온 가족이 눈물 바다가 되었던 기억은 아직도 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않는다.

2000년도 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에 들어가자마자 이들과 함께 운동하고 게임하면서 깜짝 놀라고 인간적으로 기가 죽었던 적이 몇가지가 있다.

1. 이들 메이저리그 선수들의 천문학적인 연봉을 보고 깜짝 놀랬다.
2. 원정경기 갈 때마다 타는 전용비행기를 보고 깜짝 놀랬다.
3. 2000년도부터 시작해 2006년도까지 7년 동안 원정경기 갈 때마다 나의 지정된 비지니스 좌석에 앉아서 갔다.
4. 시카고 화이트 삭스 전용 비행기다 보니 가끔 운전석에 앉아 비행할 때가 있다.
5. 원정경기 끝내고 홈으로 돌아올 때 공항 안에 선수들 개인 자동차가 서 있는데 세계에서 제일 좋은 차들은 다 서 있다.
6. 원정경기 갈 때마다 제일 좋은 호텔에 묵는다.
7. 뉴욕에서 경기 마치고 보스톤으로 가는데 기차 전체를 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀이 독점했다.
8. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 프랜차이즈 선수인 프랭크 토마스 집에 초청을 받아 갔는데 너무 화려하고 웅장해서 꼭 백악관에 온것처럼 착각할 정도로 화려하고 대단했다. 프랭크 토마스 집이 얼마나 아름답고 예술적인 집이면 매년 그해 최고의 집으로 선정이 될 정도다.
9. 미국 전역을 다 돌아다니며 MLB 야구장을 구경했는데 너무 웅장하고 화려해 입이 다물어 지지 않는다. 특히 내가 몸 담았던 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀 구장 최대인원이 들어올 수 있는 것이 무려 55000명이다. 야구를 사랑하고 야구를 좋아하는 사람이라면 꼭 한번 권하고 싶은 것이 MLB 구장을 투어하는 것을 권한다.

이것 말고도 수많은 것들이 있지만 언제 기회가 된다면 다시 정리해 보겠다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것이 2000년도에 내가 꿈에만 그리던 메이저리그 코치가 되어 처음 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에 들어섰을 때의 감격은 칠순을 바라보는 지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 얼마나 설레이었으면 전날 제대로 잠도 자지 못했던 기억이 있다.

메이저리그인 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에 들어가 첫날 꿈에만 그리던 구장을 바라보며 감격했던 순간들은 영원히 잊을 수 없다. 경기는 7시 5분인데 오후 1시에 야구장에 도착했다. 첫날 클럽하우스가 어디인지 어리둥절 하니 클럽하우스 책임자가 나를 알아보고 친절하게 안내한다.

메이저리그는 코치실과 선수실 락카가 분리되어 있다. 나를 코치실로 안내하는데 락카에 나의 이름이 붙어 있다. 영어로 'MAN SOO LEE 59' 얼마나 감격스러웠던지 눈물이 핑 돌았던 기억이 있다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에 있을 때 나의 등번호는 59번이다.

더 놀라운 것은 나의 락카에 유니폼과 언더셔츠 그리고 모자와 양말 멋진 가방까지 가지런히 다 정리되어 있다. 아무도 없는 첫날 제일 먼저 시카고 화이트 삭스 그라운드와 덕아웃 그리고 스탠드와 야구장 구석구석 다니면서 몇시간에 걸쳐 다 구경했다. 1층부터 5층까지 되어 있는 관중석을 다 올라가 구경했다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 구장 가장 높은 곳에 올라가 야구장을 바라보니 솔직히 사람이 개미보다 조금 큰 작은 마티즈 처럼 보인다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것이 딱 하나가 있는데 그것은 다름이 아니라 야구장에 있는 잔디다. 양탄자를 깔아 놓은것처럼 얼마나 잘 정리 정돈이 되어 있는지 코치들이 맨발로 다니면서 운동하는 모습을 자주본다. 물론 나도 가끔 맨발로 잔디를 밟으며 돌 때가 있다.

시카고 화이트 삭스 구장이 얼마나 크고 높으면 가장 높은 곳에 올라서서 야구장 밖을 보면 시카고 다운타운이 한눈에 다 들어올 정도로 높다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 구장은 시카고 다운타운 조금 외곽에 있다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 구장 가장 높은 곳에 서 있으면 미시간 호수가 보인다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 이들의 문화나 메이저리그 생활 그리고 선수들 개별적인 스타일이다. 첫해의 메이저리그 생활은 야구하고 가장 힘든 시간이 아니었는지 모른다. 이런 힘든 상황에서 살아남을 수 있었던 것은 나를 살린 한마디 성경 말씀이다.

시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서의 7년 동안 흔들림 없이 나를 붙잡아 주고 또 나를 담대하고 씩씩하게 했던 한마디 '빌립보서 4장 4절에서 7절' 말씀이다.

“주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라.
너희 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게 하라 주께서 가까우시니라.
아무것도 염려하지 말고 오직 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라.
그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라.”

이 말씀을 영어와 한국어로 적어서 7년 동안 나의 락카에 부쳐놓았다. 나의 락카에 큰 글씨로 영어와 한국어로 부쳐놓으니 감독이나 코치, 선수 그리고 프런트 사람들이 오며가며 나의 성경 귀절을 보며 신기하게 생각이 들었던지 보는 사람마다 묻는다. '영어는 알겠는데 밑에 있는 글씨는 무엇이냐?'는 것이다. 그래서 '한국 글씨'다. 라고 했더니 모든 사람들이 한국 글씨를 처음 본다며 신기해 한다.

삼성라이온즈 팀에서 16년간 선수생활을 정리하고 미국으로 건너가 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 2000년부터 2006년까지 7년 동안 지도자 생활을 했다. 많은 세월이 흘러 지금은 웃으며 그 시절을 회상하지만 처음 지도자 생활을 시작했을 때만 해도 언어와 문화의 장벽에 막혀 많은 어려움이 있었다. 가끔 포기하고 싶은 마음도 들었다. 그렇지만 지금 돌이켜보면 팀에서 함께 생활했던 많은 코치들, 구단 운영팀, 선수들은 내 생애 최고의 시간을 보냈다고 해도 지나침이 없다. 특히 그 중에서도 시카고 화이트 삭스의 팬들과 나눴던 시간들은 결코 잊을 수가 없다. 지금까지도 수만 킬로미터의 물리적 거리를 뛰어넘어 그들과 연락을 주고 받고 있으니 말이다.

시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 나온지 벌써 19년째가 된다. 이렇게 많은 세월이 지났지만 그들은 아직도 나를 부를 때는 '헤이~ 빅 스마일 맨'이라고 부른다. 내가 이렇게 '빅 스마일 맨'이 되기까지 정말 숫한 일들이 많았다. 그 대표적인 것이 내가 끊임 없이 웃고 친절하게 그들에게 할 수 있었던 것이 '빌립보서 4장 4절에서 7절' 말씀이다.

“주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라.
너희 관용을 모든 사람에게 알게 하라 주께서 가까우시니라.

He finished his 16-year career with the Samsung Lions in 1997 and moved to the U.S. in 1998. In 1998, his first year in the U.S., he coached for the Cleveland Indians Single-A team, and the next year in 1999, he joined the Chicago White Sox team Triple-A as a leader.

In 2000, he joined the Chicago White Sox, an MLB team. He became a major league coach just three years after entering the U.S. The emotion at that time is still unforgettable. In my second year in the U.S., I finished my life with my beloved wife and children on the Chicago White Sox Triple-A team, and I am packing to enter Korea. My friend and agent Andy Kim contacted me and said, "Man-soo, you got to go to the Chicago White Sox Major League," and I still can't remember how the whole family was in tears.

As soon as I joined the Chicago White Sox team in 2000, I was surprised and humanly discouraged working out and playing games with them.

1. I was surprised to see the astronomical salaries of these Major League players.2. I was surprised to see a private plane that I ride every time I go to an away game.3. I went to my designated business seat every time I went to an away game for seven years, starting in 2000 and 2006.4. Since it is a Chicago White Sox plane, sometimes it flies in the driver's seat.5. When returning home after the away game, the players' personal cars are standing inside the airport, and all the best cars in the world are standing.6. Whenever I go to an away game, I stay at the best hotel.7. The entire train was monopolized by the Chicago White Sox after the game in New York to Boston.8. I was invited to the Frank Thomas house, a franchise player for the Chicago White Sox, and it was so colorful and magnificent that I felt like I was in the White House. How beautiful and artistic the Frank Thomas house is, every year, it is selected as the best house of the year.9. I went around the U.S. and looked at MLB ballparks, but they are so grand and colorful that I can't keep my mouth shut. In particular, 55,000 people can enter the Chicago White Sox team stadium where I worked. If you love baseball and love baseball, I recommend you to tour MLB Stadium.

There are many other things besides this, but I will try to organize them again if I have the chance. What is still haunting is that the emotion I felt when I first joined the Chicago White Sox team in 2000 as a major league coach of my dream, is still haunting now. I remember how excited I was the day before I couldn't sleep properly.

I will never forget the moments when I was deeply moved on the first day when I joined the Chicago White Sox team in the Major League, looking at the stadium that I had dreamed of. The game was 7:05 p.m., but I arrived at the ballpark at 1 p.m. The manager of the clubhouse recognizes me and guides me kindly as I am puzzled by the location of the clubhouse on the first day.

In the MLB, the coach's office and the player's room's locker are separated. It guides me to the coach's office, and my name is attached to the locker. I remember how emotional "MAN SOO LEE 59" in English was, and I was in tears. When I was with the Chicago White Sox, my number was 59.

What's more surprising is that my locker has uniforms, undershirts, hats, socks, and cool bags neatly arranged. On the first day when nobody was around, I spent hours touring the Chicago White Sox Ground, dugout, and every corner of the stand and baseball stadium. I went up the stands on the first to fifth floors to watch. When I went up to the highest point of the Chicago White Sox stadium and looked at the ballpark, I honestly saw that a person looked like a little Matiz, slightly taller than an ant.

Even now, there is one thing that is still haunting: the grass in the ballpark. I often see coaches working out barefoot to see how well organized it is like a carpet. Of course, I sometimes turn barefoot stepping on the grass.

Chicago White Sox Stadium is so tall and high that you can see downtown Chicago at a glance when you step up to the highest point and look outside the ballpark. Chicago White Sox Stadium is just outside Chicago Downtown. If you stand at the highest point of Chicago White Sox Stadium, you can see Lake Michigan.

Even now, what is still haunting is their culture, their major league life, and their individual styles. Maybe my first year in the Major League was the hardest time after playing baseball. It was the Bible that saved me that I was able to survive such a difficult situation.

The words "Philip Boseo 4:4 to 7" that held me unwavering for seven years with the Chicago White Sox team and kept me bold and brave.

"Always rejoice in the Lord; rejoice that I say it again.
Let everyone know your tolerance, for the LORD is near.
Do not worry about anything, but tell God that you will be saved only by prayer and simplicity in everything.
Then the peace of God, who is excellent in all perception, will protect your heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus."

I wrote this in English and Korean and mailed it to my rock car for 7 years. I put it in English and Korean on my rock car in large letters, so the coaches, players, and front desk staff come and ask if they thought it was strange to see my Bible. They said, 'I know English, but what's the letter below?' So I said, 'It's Korean.' Everyone is amazed to see Korean writing for the first time.

After 16 years of playing for the Samsung Lions, he moved to the U.S. and led for seven years from 2000 to 2006 for the Chicago White Sox. Many years later, I recall those days with a smile, but when I first began my leadership, I was blocked by language and culture barriers and had many difficulties. I sometimes felt like giving up. Looking back, however, it is impossible for many of the coaches, team management teams, and players I have lived with on the team to have the best time of my life. Especially, I can never forget the times I spent with fans of the Chicago White Sox. I still keep in touch with them over tens of thousands of kilometers of physical distance.

It's already been 19 years since I joined the Chicago White Sox. They still call me "Hey, Big Smile Man" when they call me after all these years. There were so many easy things to do before I became such a "Big Smile Man." The representative thing is that what I was able to do to them with constant laughter and kindness is the words "Philipbo 4:4 to 7."
