< 세상을 변화 시키는 사람 >

세상을 변화 시키는 것은 많은 사람이 필요하지 않다. 세상을 변화 시키는 것은 뛰어난 한사람으로 인해 세상이 변화한다. 그 뛰어난 리더가 되길 우리 모두 노력해야 한다. 나는 할 수 없어가 아니라 나도 그렇게 할 수 있다는 생각을 가지면 얼마든지 할 수 있다.

뛰어난 리더가 조직을 변화 시키듯이 세상도 마찬가지다. 그 한사람이 내가 될 수 있다는 마음만 있으면 세상은 얼마든지 변화 시킬 수 있다. 그러나 우리는 똑똑한 사람들이 많이 있어야 세상을 변화 시킬 수 있다고 이야기한다. 세상은 많은 사람들이 필요로 하는 것이 아니라 자기 분야에서 애정을 갖고 열정을 가는 몇사람이 그 조직을 변화 시킨다.

지금까지 이 세상을 살아오면서 많은 사람들이 세상을 변화 시키는 것을 보지 못했다. 어떤 조직이던지 그 조직을 변화 시키는 사람은 뛰어난 열정과 그 일에 대한 사랑과 인내를 갖고 끊임없이 도전하고 다시 일어서서 포기하지 않고 달려가는 한사람으로 인해 그 조직이 변화하고 세상이 변화하는 것이다.

'헐크파운데이션' 스텝진들을 볼 때면 세상을 조금이라도 변화 시키기 위해 헌신하는 사람들이다. 오랜 시간 동안 이들과 함께 하면서 나도 모르게 저절로 머리가 숙여질 정도로 겸손하게 된다.

세상을 변화시키는 사람은 일등이 아닌 그 조직을 사랑하고, 열정을 갖고, 끝까지 포기하지 않는 사람만이 세상을 변화시킨다.

그 한사람이 모두가 다 되었으면 좋겠지만 절대 그럴수 없다. 그러나 그 한사람이 내가  될 수 있다는 자신감을 갖고 이 세상을 달려가야 한다.

한 나라의 리더가 누구냐에 따라 그 나라가 흥하느냐? 망하느냐?(興亡盛衰 흥망성쇠)가 결정 된다. 마찬가지다. 어떤 조직이던지 그 조직의 리더가 누구냐에 따라 그 조직이 번창할 것인지 망할 것인지 결정이 된다.

어린시절부터 늘 꿈에만 그리던 메이저리그에 드디어 2000년도에 들어가게 되었다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 스프링캠프는 애리조나 투산에 있다. 나에게 메이저리그는 모든 것들이 다 서툴고 또 무엇을 어떻게 해야 할지 전혀 몰랐던 시절이다. 거기다가 영어도 서툴고 동양인이라고는 한명도 없는 낯선 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 어떻게 행동해야 할지 잘 모를 때 가장 먼저 친절하게 나를 대하고 많은 것을 가르쳐 주었던 사람이 바로 Jerry Manuel 감독이었다.

지금도 잊을 수가 없는 것이 Jerry Manuel 감독은 항상 진보적인 사람이었다. 평생 미국야구만 하다가 나로 인해 동양야구에 대해 궁금해 하면서 질문하게 되었다. Jerry 는 경기 들어가기 전에 단체 훈련할 때 외야에서 수비하고 있는 나를 가끔 찾는다. Jerry 의 모습을 지금도 잊지 못하는 것은 외야에서 수비하고 있는 나를 찾고는 곧바로 나에게 다가오는 것이 아니라 내야에서 수비 하는척 하면서 나에게 다가온다. 어제 경기는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 저런 상황에서는 너는 어떻게 할 것인가? 저 선수는 왜 저렇게 타격하느냐? 너의 타격이론은 어떤가? 어제 작전에 대해서는 너는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 는 등 많은 것들을 묻는다.

이럴 때마다 솔직히 영어가 짧은 것에 대한 나 자신을 얼마나 많이 원망했는지..... 내가 영어가 짧고 서툴어도 Jerry Manuel 감독은 단 한번도 내색하지 않고 나의 말에 집중하며 청종했다.

나는 야구를 50년 넘게 하면서 많은 지도자들을 만났다. 지난 50년 동안 여러 지도자들을 만나면서 내가 가장 존경하고 배우고 싶은 지도자는 Jerry Manuel 감독이다. 그의 인품이나 야구에 대한 해박한 지식 그리고 늘 공부하는 자세는 야구인 나 자신도 그의 야구 사랑에 빠질 수 밖에 없다. 특히 지도자가 갖추어야 할 덕목과 인품은 Jerry Manuel 감독이 최고였다.

언제나 두꺼운 가방을 들고 다니면서 수많은 자료들을 분석하고 연구하는 지도자였다.  Jerry Manuel 감독이 가장 존경하는 인물이 남아프리카공화국 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 대통령이다. Jerry Manuel 감독이 Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 대통령을 존경하는 인물로 보아도 그의 인품이 어떠한지 이미 알 수 있다.

선수들을 대할 때는 항상 인격적으로 대하고 또 서로 야구관이 다를 때는 밤새도록 선수나 지도자 그리고 구단 사람들과 토론하는 스타일이다. 강압적으로 선수들을 이끌어 가기 보다는 합당하고 합리적으로 선수들을 지도하는 스타일이다.

지금도 잊지 못하는 것은 Jerry Manuel 감독이 스텝진 가족들을 자기 집에 초청해 온 가족이 다 함께 그의 집에 간적이 있다. 명색이 메이저리그 감독이라면 웅장하고 거대한  집에서 생활 할 줄 알았는데 그것이 아니라 너무나 평범하면서 아늑하고 편안한 집에서 가족들과 함께 지내는 것이다.

우리가족이 다 부러워 했던 것은 지하방에 온통 야구로 전시가 되어 있었다. (말 그대로 작은 야구 박물관이었다) 세월이 많이 지났음에도 불구하고 지금도 집사람은 Jerry Manuel 감독 와이프의 자상함과 친절함을 잊지 못한다고 한다.

나는 야구만 55년 넘게 했다. 평생 한길로 달려오면서 본받을 수 있는 지도자가 있고 멘토가 있다는 것에 늘 감사한다. 비록 서로 나라가 틀리고 언어가 달라도 야구 만큼은 하나가 될 수 있다는 것을  Jerry Manuel 감독을 보면서 다시 한번 깨닫게 되었다.


    < The one who changes the world>

It doesn't take many people to change the world. It's one outstanding person who changes the world. We all have to work hard to be that outstanding leader. It's not that I can't do it, but if I think I can do it, I can do it as much as I want.

Just as an excellent leader changes an organization, the world is the same. The world can change as much as possible if that person can become me. But we say that we need a lot of smart people to change the world. The world does not need many people, but a few people who are passionate and affectionate in their field change the organization.

Until now, I have not seen many people change the world in my life. The person who changes the organization of any organization is one who constantly challenges it, stands up, and runs without giving up, with outstanding passion, love, and patience for the work, which changes the organization and changes the world.

When I see the 'Hulk Foundation' staff members, they are dedicated to changing the world even a little. After spending a long time with them, I become humbled enough to bow my head without realizing it.

Only those who love the organization, have passion, and never give up, who change the world, not the first.

I want that person to be everyone, but I can't. But I have to run in this world with confidence that that person can become me.

The rise and fall of a country's 亡盛衰 is determined by who is the leader of the country. The same is true of any organization. It is determined by who is the leader of that organization whether it will thrive or fail.

I finally joined the Major League in 2000, which I had always dreamed of since I was a child. The Chicago White Sox spring camp is in Tucson, Arizona. For me, MLB was a time when everything was not good and I had no idea what to do or what to do. In addition, manager Jerry Manuel was the first person who treated me kindly and taught me a lot when I was not sure how to act on the Chicago White Sox, who were unfamiliar with English and had no Asian people.

What can't be forgotten even now is that manager Jerry Manuel has always been a progressive person. After playing only American baseball all my life, I became curious about Eastern baseball and asked questions. Jerry sometimes finds me defending in the outfield during group training before entering the game.

What I still can't forget about Jerry's appearance is not that he finds me defending in the outfield, but approaches me by pretending to be defending in the infield. What do you think of yesterday's game? What will you do in that situation? Why does that player hit like that? What about your batting theory? Many things ask about yesterday's operation, such as, "What do you think?"

Whenever I do this, honestly, how much I resented myself for being short in English... Even though I was short and clumsy in English, director Jerry Manuel never showed off and listened to me, focusing on my words.

While playing baseball for over 50 years, I have met many leaders. Coach Jerry Manuel is the leader I respect the most and want to learn from over the past 50 years. His personality, extensive knowledge of baseball, and his attitude of studying all the time are bound to fall in love with him. In particular, manager Jerry Manuel was the best in terms of virtues and character that a leader should have.

He was a leader who always carried a thick bag and analyzed and studied numerous materials. The person that director Jerry Manuel most admires is South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Even if director Jerry Manuel is a person who respects President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, you can already see his personality.

When dealing with players, I always treat them personally, and when baseball views are different from each other, I tend to debate with players, leaders, and club members all night long. Rather than being forced to lead players, I tend to guide players reasonably and reasonably.

What I still can't forget is that manager Jerry Manuel invited the steppin family to his house, and the whole family went to his house together. I thought that a major league manager would live in a grand and huge house, but it's not that he is staying with his family in a very ordinary, cozy and comfortable house.

What my family envied was all baseball on display in the basement. (It was literally a small baseball museum) Despite the fact that many years have passed, my wife still cannot forget the kindness and kindness of director Jerry Manuel's wife.

I've played baseball for more than 55 years. I'm always grateful that I have a leader and a mentor who I can imitate while running on the same path all my life. I realized once again that baseball can become one, even if the countries are different and the languages are different, while watching manager Jerry Manuel.
