< 멀리 보고 달려가야 한다 >

지난 2월 26일 중국에서 야구 팀을 만들고 싶다며 멀리 미국을 통해 중국으로 다시 한국으로 찾아와 서울에서 만났다. 물론 작년부터 꾸준하게 서로 연락하며 어떻게 하면 사회주의 나라인 중국에서 야구팀을 만들고 어떻게 학생들에게 야구를 가르칠 것인지 많이 의논했다.

이날 오랜 시간 동안 미국과 중국에서 생활하신 이사장님과 앞으로 있을 많은 일들에 대해 이야기 나누었다. 동남아에 야구를 전파한지 어느덧 10년이 훌쩍 넘어선다. 평생 현장에 있다가 야구를 전파 한답시고 낯선 라오스로 처음 내려갈 때만 해도 세상 물정을 전혀 모르다가 처음으로 홀로 세상에 나왔다. 이때만 해도 늘 내가 해오던 대로 야구 전파한다는 열정과 투지만 있으면 얼마든지 할 수 있을 것이라는 생각을 갖고 시작했다.

그런데 이들과 함께 야구를 시작하면서 나의 생각들이 얼마나 잘못 되었다는 것을 라오스 들어가 처음 야구를 시작하면서 깨닫게 되었다. 라오스에 들어가 몇번이나 도망가고, 회피하고 싶은 마음이었다. 열정만 있으면 얼마든지 야구를 내 마음껏 전파할 수 있다고 생각했던 나의 어리석음을 뒤늦게 깨닫게 되었다.

이제 첫발을 내디딘 중국도 야구를 처음 경험해보는 학생들이 많이 있을 것이다. 중국이라는 낯선 곳에서 야구를 전파하는 일이 얼마나 힘이 들고 어려운 일인지 지난 동남아로 내려가 많이 경험했기에 이번에도 마음을 단단히 먹어야 한다.

지난 10년 넘도록 동남아로 내려가 야구를 보급 시킬 때 나 스스로 가장 많이 다짐하고 또 다짐한 것이 '야구 전파는 기다림과 인내의 싸움이다' 라는 것을 배우게 되었다. 한국처럼 야구를 처음 접한 선수가 몇년이 되지 않아 훌륭한 선수로 성장했다는 이야기는 우리는 자주 언론을 통해 보게 된다. 그러나 이번에 시작하는 중국은 한국과 다른 유형을 갖고 있는 나라다.

다행히 중국은 다른 동남아와 달리 야구를 그나마 쉽게 접할 수 있는 나라다. 이전에 내가 처음 들어가 야구를 전파했던 나라인 라오스에서 야구를 전파할 때만 해도 평생 단 한번도 야구라는 것을 듣지도 못하고 보지도 못했기 때문에 야구공을 축구로 착각해 발로 찾던 나라가 라오스였다. 야구를 이해시키고 룰을 가르치는 일이 얼마나 힘들고 어려운 일이라는 것을 이들과 함께 야구하면서 수도 없이 머리를 쥐어짜며 힘들어 했던 기억이 있다.

중국은 큰도시를 제외하면 야구를 많이 접해보지 못한 나라이기 때문에 야구에 대한 심리적 거리감이 있을 것이다. 우리처럼 어려서부터 자연스럽게 야구랑 스포츠를 알게되는 나라와는 다르다. 우리나라처럼 생각하고 이들에게 야구를 접근 했다가는 많은 부분에서 좌절을 경험하게 될 수 있다. 이들에게 야구를 전파하고 보급하는 일은 일단 긴 시간을 갖고 접근해야 한다.

이사장님과 함께 시작하는 중국 야구도 스텝 바이 스텝 식으로 해서 천천히 가야 한다. 다시 이야기 하지만 마음이 조급해 성적을 내고 큰 업적만을 나타내려고 한다면 처음 시작했던 우리들의 생각이 다른 방향으로 나아 갈 수 있음을 잊어서는 안 된다. 그렇게 할 때 그나마 어느 정도 야구를 할 수 있는 기반이 잡힌다.

중국은 여러가지로 좋은 여건에서 야구를 시작할 수 있는 나라다. 그래도 아직 중국은 우리나라처럼 널리 알려진 스포츠가 아니다. 그렇다보니 야구를 이해 시키고 가르치는 일이 우리가 생각한 것처럼 절대 쉽지 않다는 것을 잊어서는 안 된다.

중국에도 야구를 활성화 시키기 위해 꿈 많은 후배들이 곳곳에 있다. 그들은 옆나라 중국에도 야구를 통해 서로 협력해 아시아에서 최고의 야구 강국으로 만들기 위해 노력하는 후배들이 있다. 앞으로 중국에 야구를 보급 시키려고 할 때 분명 큰 꿈과 부푼 포부를 갖고 척박하고 처음 접해보는 그들에게 대한민국의 선진야구를 전파하기 위해 큰 비전을 갖고 들어 가려고 하는 후배들이 많이 있을 것이다.

나 또한 지난 10년 넘도록 동남아로 내려가 그들과 함께 야구를 하면서 많은 시행착오를 경험했고 또 쓰라린 아픔들을 경험했다는 것을 후배들은 잊어서는 안 된다. 후배들에게 부탁하고 싶은 것은 지금부터라도 무언가 그들에게 멋지게 야구를 가르쳐서 보여 주겠다는 생각을 갖게 되면 중국에 들어가자마자 초심을 잃게 될 수 있다는 것을 명심해야 한다. 중요한건 속도가 아니라 방향이라는 말처럼 지금부터 스텝 바이 스텝으로 하나씩 천천히 그리고 길게가야 야구를 그들에게 가르칠 수 있고 또 중국 야구도 자연스럽게 성장한다는 것을 절대 잊어서는 안 된다.

멀리 가기 위해서는 모두가 함께 가야 한다. 물론 빨리 가려면 혼자가면 된다. 그러나 거대하고 위대한 일을 위해서는 혼자서는 절대 갈 수 없다. 지금부터 천천히 하나씩 멀리보고 달려가야 한다.

Of course, we have been in constant contact with each other since last year and discussed a lot about how to build a baseball team in the socialist country of China and teach baseball to students.

On this day, I talked with Chairman Lee, who had lived in the U.S. and China for a long time, about many things to happen in the future. Ten years have passed since baseball spread to Southeast Asia. When I first moved down to Laos, where I was unfamiliar with baseball after being in the field for the rest of my life, I had no idea about the world, but I came to the world alone for the first time. At this time, I started with the thought that if I had the passion and determination to spread baseball as I have always done, I would be able to do as much as I want.

However, as I started playing baseball with them, I realized how wrong my thoughts were when I first entered Laos and played baseball. I wanted to escape and avoid Laos several times. I belatedly realized my foolishness, which I thought that if I had passion, I could spread baseball to my heart's content.

China, which has taken its first step, will also have many students who are new to baseball. I have experienced a lot of how hard and difficult it is to spread baseball in an unfamiliar place called China, so I have to keep my mind strong again this time.

Over the past decade, when I went down to Southeast Asia to spread baseball, I learned that the biggest pledge and commitment I made was that 'baseball propagation is a battle of waiting and patience'. We often see in the media that a player who is new to baseball like Korea has grown into a great player in less than a few years. However, China, which is starting this time, is a country with a different type from Korea.

Fortunately, unlike other Southeast Asian countries, China is a country where baseball is relatively easy to access. When I spread baseball in Laos, the country where I first joined and spread baseball, I had never heard or seen baseball in my life, so Laos was the country where I mistook the baseball for soccer and looked for it with my feet. I remember that I struggled countless times while playing baseball with them to understand how hard and difficult it was to teach baseball and rules.

China is a country that has not been exposed to many baseball games except in large cities, so there must be a psychological distance to baseball. It is different from a country where you naturally learn baseball and sports from a young age like us. If you think like Korea and approach baseball to them, you can experience frustration in many ways. First of all, you must approach the spread and dissemination of baseball to them over a long period of time.

Chinese baseball, which starts with the chairman, should also go slowly in a step-by-step manner. Again, if you are in a hurry to produce results and only show great achievements, you must not forget that our thoughts that started out can go in a different direction. When you do that, you can establish a foundation for playing baseball to some extent.

China is a country that can start baseball in many good conditions. Still, China is not a widely known sport like Korea yet. Therefore, we must not forget that understanding and teaching baseball is never as easy as we thought.

In China, there are many dreamy juniors everywhere to revitalize baseball. They also have juniors in the neighboring country of China who are trying to cooperate with each other through baseball to become the best baseball powerhouse in Asia. When trying to distribute baseball to China in the future, there must be many juniors who want to go in with a big vision to spread advanced baseball in Korea to those who are barren and new to them.

My juniors should not forget that I have also gone down to Southeast Asia over the past 10 years and experienced many trials and errors while playing baseball with them, and experienced bitter pains. What I want to ask my juniors is that if they think that they will teach and show them baseball in a cool way from now on, they may lose their initial motivation as soon as they enter China. As the saying goes, what matters is not speed but direction, one step-by-step should be slow and long to teach baseball to them, and one should never forget that Chinese baseball will grow naturally.

To go far, everyone has to go together. Of course, if you want to go fast, you can go alone. But you can never go alone for something huge and great. From now on, you have to look far and run slowly, one by one.
