베트남 하노이에 있는 나의 친구인 신재영 대표가 어제(7일) 동영상 하나를 보내 주었다. 어제도 영상을 올렸지만 박효철 감독의 열정적이고 헌신적인 지도를 보며 야구인 선배로서 후배가 얼마나 자랑스럽고 멋지게 보여지는지 모른다.

베트남 야구국가대표 초대 감독인 박효철 후배는 미국에서의 오랜 생활을 접고 베트남에 들어온 그는 지난 3년 동안 낯선 환경에 적응하느라 지금까지 힘든 베트남 생활을 보내고 있다. 오랜 미국에서의 생활을 모두 청산하고 물설고 낯설은 베트남으로 입국하기까지 지난 3년이란 시간 동안 단 한번도 쉽게 진행된 것이 없었다.

한국에서 화려했던 경력의 아마추어 지도자 생활을 뒤로하고 선택한 미국행. 그리고 다시 미국에서 야구를 가르치며 뭔가 2% 부족했던 갈증을 느끼던 그의 앞에 나타난 새로운 도전. 베트남 야구. 떨쳐버릴 수 없었다는 그의 말처럼 사람과 야구 코칭에 진심이며, 물질적인 것을 쫓아가지 않는 그의 성품과 베트남 야구는 너무나도 잘 어울린다.

지금 베트남 야구는 박효철 감독의 진심어린 헌신과 희생으로 인해 새로운 비상을 꿈꾸고 있다. 그 비상의 첫 과업은 베트남 학생을 위한 야구 훈련 지도이다. 이 첫 과업을 위해 박효철 감독은 하루에도 셀 수 없을 정도로 뛰어 다니며 베트남 유소년 및 중학생, 고등학생, 대학생들에게 야구를 가르치고 있다.

베트남 야구의 발전 방향은 많은 것을 고려해야 한다. 오직 국가대표 선수들을 양성해서 국제대회의 성적만을 생각한다면 베트남 야구는 ‘빛 좋은 개살구’가 될 것이다. 베트남 야구는 학교(뿌리), 사회(줄기), 국가대표(열매)를 골고루 발전시켜야 한다. 학교체육에 야구를 정식 종목으로 채택해서 야구를 지도하고, 야구부를 창단하거나 동아리 활동을 활성화시켜야 한다.

이후 학교를 졸업한 선수들로 구성된 사회인 야구가 한국처럼 활성화 되고 각종 대회가 개최 되어야 한다. 이러한 선수 중에서 탁월한 재능을 가진 선수들이 국가대표가 되는 선순환의 시스템을 갖추어야 한다. 박효철 감독의 생각은 베트남 국가대표를 통한 성적을 올리는 것이 목표가 아니다. 베트남에서 야구가 활성화 되어 많은 베트남 국민이 야구의 매력을 알아가는 것이 그의 최종 목표이다. 앞서 이야기한 시스템이 갖춰지면 국가대표팀의 국제대회 성적은 자연스럽게 만들어진다는 것이다. 나 또한 박효철 감독의 철학을 전적으로 동의한다.

박효철 감독은 지난 3년 동안 어느 누구에게도 말하지 않고 혼자서 많은 어려움을 감내하며 묵묵하게 베트남 선수들을 지도하고 그들과 함께 야구하고 있다. 현재 베트남 야구협회와 베트남 야구선수들이 박효철 감독의 성실함과 야구에 대한 열정, 그리고 베트남 학생들을 사랑하는 모습을 가장 가까이에서 지켜보고 있는 그들은 자기들보다 더 열심히 베트남 선수들을 지도하고 사랑하는 것에 탄복을 했다며 입이 침이 마를 정도로 칭찬하고 있다.

박효철 감독은 지난 3년 동안 항상 선수들보다 2 - 3시간 일찍 운동장에 나와 그날 훈련할 모든 준비를 한다. 그리고 야구장이 없기 때문에 축구장에서 연습을 할 수 밖에 없는 상황이고, 그라운드 사정이 좋지 않아 선수들이 부상을 당하면 마땅히 병원에 갈 수 없는 상황이기에 어떻게 해서라도 선수들이 부상 당하지 않도록 박효철 감독이 철저하게 그라운드를 점검하고 있다. 박효철 감독의 이런 자세와 모습들이 베트남에서 처음 야구를 접해보는 어린선수들이 시간이 갈수록 박효철 감독의 모습을 보며 따라하는 선수들이 점점 많아지고 있다.

야간훈련은(야간훈련이라고 하기에는 불빛이 너무 어두워서 캐치볼이나 타격은 하지 못할 때가 많다.) 오후 6시부터 훈련 시작해서 9시에 모든 연습이 끝이 난다. 그런데 지금까지 단 한번도 제 시간에 훈련이 끝난적이 없었다. 야구를 처음 접해보는 선수들이 대부분이라 박효철 감독은 부족한 선수들이 있으면 하나라도 더 가르쳐 주고 싶은 마음에 늘 밤 10시가 넘어서야 모든 훈련이 끝 날 때가 많다. 거기다가 모든 훈련을 다 끝내고 박효철 감독 혼자서 그날 훈련했던 도구들을 정리하다보면 어느새 밤 11시가 훌쩍 넘길 때가 많다고 한다.

지난 3년 동안 박효철 감독은 모든 훈련을 다 끝내고 차도 없이 녹초가 된 몸으로 홀로 먼 거리를 걸어 갈 때가 많다. 때론 선수들이 오토바이로 태워 줄 때도 있지만 주로 혼자서 운동삼아 집까지 걸어간다. 늦은 시간에 저녁을 먹고 샤워하다 보면 밤 12시가 훌쩍 넘기는 것이 대부분이란다. 이렇게 힘든 하루를 보내는데도 박효철 감독은 유니폼만 입으면 그렇게 행복하고 좋을 수가 없다고 한다.

험난하고 힘든 상황에서도 늘 즐겁게 야구하려고 노력하는 박효철 감독을 보면 그가 얼마나 야구에 대한 열정이 많은 후배인지 알 수 있다. 그의 그런 열정이 없었더라면 이런 험난하고 힘든 베트남까지 내려와 야구를 가르치지 않았을 것이다.

베트남에는 요즘 학생들이 스포츠에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 있다. 베트남에서 가장 인기 종목은 단연 축구이지만 남학생 여학생 할 것없이 야구의 매력에 빠져 있는 젊은이들이 생각외로 많은 편이다. 베트남도 라오스처럼 모계사회다보니 여자선수들이 생각보다 운동신경들이 남자들보다 뛰어난 선수들이 의외로 많이 있다.

친구가 보내준 동영상을 보며 지난 3년 동안 낯설고 물설은 곳으로 부부가 들어와 서로 의지하며 지금까지 잘 견디어 주었다. 앞에서도 잠시 이야기 했지만 모든것들이 다 열악하고 환경이 좋지 않은 베트남에서 어린선수들과 함께 야구를 가르치는 것을 보며 옛날 라오스에서 처음 선수들을 가르쳤던 것들이 오버랩 되면서 박효철 감독이 얼마나 많이 고생하며 지냈을 것을 생각하니 나의 마음이 먹먹해지는 것을 보게 된다.

박효철 감독은 베트남에서 야구가 활성화 되어 많은 베트남 국민이 야구의 매력을 알아가는 것이 그의 최종 목표라고 한다. 그는 야구의 재미를 알고 스스로 기본기의 중요성을 알기를 원한다며 몇번이나 강하게 이야기 한다. 나아가 야구가 몇몇 좋은 기량을 갖춘 선수들에 의해 만들어지는 것이 아닌 팀웍을 갖춘 짜임새 있는 원팀으로 성장하기를 바라고 있다.

야구를 진정으로 사랑하고 야구 지도를 삶의 전부로 여기는 박효철 감독은 반드시 베트남 야구를 동남아시아에서 주목할 만한 팀으로 성장시킬 것이라 믿는다.


    < A man who really loves baseball>

He went to the U.S., where he chose to leave behind his brilliant career as an amateur leader in Korea. Then again, while teaching baseball in the U.S., he had a new challenge that appeared before him, who felt thirst for something that lacked 2 percent. Vietnamese baseball. As he said, "I couldn't get rid of it," he is serious about coaching people and baseball, and his personality, which does not pursue material things, matches well with Vietnamese baseball.

Now, Vietnamese baseball is dreaming of a new emergency because of Park's sincere dedication and sacrifice. The first task of the emergency is to guide baseball's training for Vietnamese students. For this first task, Park runs countless times a day, teaching baseball to Vietnamese youth, middle school, high school, and college students.

The direction of development of Vietnamese baseball has to be considered a lot. If only national team players are trained and the performance of international competitions is considered, Vietnamese baseball will be a 'bright and wide apricot'. Vietnamese baseball should develop schools (root), society (stem), and national teams (fruit) evenly. Baseball should be adopted as an official sport in school sports to guide baseball, establish a baseball team, or revitalize club activities.

After that, social baseball, composed of players who have graduated from school, should be activated like Korea and various competitions should be held. Among these players, there should be a virtuous cycle system in which players with outstanding talents become national teams. Coach Park Hyo-chul's idea is not to improve his performance through the Vietnamese national team. His ultimate goal is to promote baseball in Vietnam and let many Vietnamese people know the charm of baseball. Once the aforementioned system is in place, the national team's performance in international competitions will be made naturally. I also completely agree with manager Park Hyo-chul's philosophy.

Coach Park Hyo-chul has been silently coaching Vietnamese players and playing baseball with them, enduring many difficulties by himself without telling anyone for the past three years. Currently watching the Vietnamese Baseball Association and Vietnamese baseball players love the Vietnamese students the most closely, they praise the Vietnamese baseball association for their sincerity, passion for baseball, and their admiration for coaching and loving Vietnamese players harder than they do.

Coach Park Hyo-chul has always been on the field two to three hours earlier than the players for the past three years, making all preparations for training that day. And because there is no baseball field, he has no choice but to practice on the soccer field, and if players are injured due to poor ground conditions, they cannot go to the hospital, so coach Park Hyo-chul is thoroughly checking the ground to prevent players from getting injured. More and more young players are watching and following Park Hyo-chul as time goes by.

Night training starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. All training sessions begin at night (the light is too dark to call it a night training session.) However, training sessions have never ended on time until now. As most of the players are new to baseball, coach Park Hyo-cheol said, "All training sessions often end after 10 p.m. because he wants to teach players who are not good enough. In addition, when I organize the tools that I trained that day alone after all the training sessions are over, the 11 p.m. is often said.

Over the past three years, Park has often walked long distances alone with his exhausted body after completing all training sessions. Sometimes players give him a ride on motorcycles, but he usually walks home by himself for exercise. Most people have dinner late at night and take a shower. Despite such a tough day, Park says that wearing a uniform cannot be so happy and good.

Coach Park Hyo-chul, who always tries to enjoy baseball even in tough and difficult situations, shows how passionate he is about baseball. Without his passion, he would not have come down to Vietnam and taught baseball.

In Vietnam, students are very interested in sports these days. The most popular sport in Vietnam is soccer, but there are unexpectedly many young people who are fascinated by baseball regardless of whether they are boys or girls. Since Vietnam is a matriarchal society like Laos, there are surprisingly many female athletes who have better athletic abilities than men.

Watching the video clip sent by my friend, the couple came into a strange and strange place for the past three years and relied on each other to endure well until now. As I talked about it for a while, I saw him teaching baseball with young players in Vietnam, where everything was poor and the environment was poor, and when the things that first taught players in Laos overlapped, I saw how much manager Park Hyo-chul struggled with.

Coach Park Hyo-chul says his ultimate goal is to promote baseball in Vietnam and let many Vietnamese people know the charm of baseball. He says he wants to know the fun of baseball and know the importance of basic skills on his own.
