< 이만수 살아 있네 >

지난 8일 토요일 아내와 드라이브 하다가 멀리 LNG 야구장에서 어린선수들이 야구 경기하는 장면을 보게 되었다. 아내의 배려로 잠시 차를 세우고 어린 아이들이 재미있게 야구하는 모습을 구경하고 있는데 인천 연수구 BC 박철현 감독과 인천 서구 BC 김태권 감독이 나를 알아보고 인사하러 왔다. 두 지도자들의 요청으로 사복차림 이였지만 그자리에서 포수들을 잠시 가르쳐주게 되었는데 갑작스러운 자리임에도 나의 열정이 깊은 내면에서 솟아 나오는 것을 알 수 있었다.

사복입은 상태라 선수들이나 학부형들에게 예의가 아닌 것 같아 인천 연수구 BC 야구팀과 인천 서구 BC 야구팀에 유니폼을 입고 정식으로 재능기부 가기로 약속했고, 딱 일주일째인 어제(15일) 송도에 있는 LNG 야구장으로 찾아갔다.

두 지도자는 오후12시 30분까지 오면 된다고 했지만 나는 12시까지 야구장에 갔다. 일찍 가서 오늘 포수들에게 가르쳐 주고 싶은 것들이 많았기 때문이다.

내가 온다고 하니 박철현 감독이 여자 국가대표 투수와 포수를 데리고 왔다. 함께 해도 되느냐 묻기에 당연히 함께 할 수 있다고 했다. 그리고 내가 박감독한테 한시간 반동안 포수들만 데리고 연습 시켜도 되느냐 물었더니 얼마든지 하라고 한다.

오늘 3가지만 하는데도 시간이 얼마나 빨리 지나갔는지 모른다. 솔직히 시간이 많이 부족했다. 어린선수들이 나를 잘 따라와 주었지만 와일드 피칭 시 볼이 뒤로 빠졌을 때 빨리 달려가 슬라이딩 해서 홈이나 1루로 송구하는 연습은 조금 힘이 들었다.

여러번 어린선수들에게 설명해 주었음에도 불구하고 잘 되지 않았다. 물론 어린선수들에게는 조금 어려운 고도의 기술일 수 있다. 그러나 쉽게 생각하면 그렇게 어렵지 않다. 왜냐하면 슬라이딩만 할 줄 알면 다 할 수 있는 기술이기 때문이다.

할 수 없이 포수들에게 렉가드를 빌려서 내가 직접 시범을 보여주기로 했다. 렉가드 차는 그 짧은 순간에 예순여덟살인 내가 렉가드 차고 어린선수들 앞에서 괜히 망신살만 사면 어쩌지 하는 별의별 걱정이 다 들었지만, 걱정에도 불구하고 나는 멋지게 슬라이딩 해서 시범을 보였다. 그것도 한번이 아니라 여러번. 그러나 열심히 가르칠 때는 몰랐는데 역시 나이는 속일 수가 없는 모양이다. 재능기부가 끝나고 집에 돌아와 사우나 하는데 조금씩 무릎이 쑤시는 것이다.

그래도 이 나이에 어린선수들 앞에서 시범을 보여 줄 수 있어 얼마나 감사하고 또 감사한지 모른다. 아직 이만수는 죽지 않았음을 오늘 보게 되었다.

While driving with my wife on Saturday the 8th, I saw young players playing baseball at an LNG ballpark in the distance. I stopped my car for a while with my wife's consideration and watched young children play baseball, and BC manager Park Chul-hyun of Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, and Kim Tae-kwon of Seo-gu, Incheon, came to recognize me and greet me. At the request of the two leaders, I was dressed in plain clothes, but I taught the catchers on the spot for a while, and I could see that my passion was rising from the inside even though it was a sudden occasion.

He promised to officially donate his talent to the BC baseball team in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, and the BC baseball team in Seo-gu, Incheon, because he was dressed in plain clothes, and went to the LNG baseball stadium in Songdo yesterday (15th), just a week later.

The two leaders said they could come by 12:30 p.m., but I went to the ballpark until 12:00. It's because I went early and there were many things I wanted to teach the catchers today.

When I said I would come, coach Park Chul-hyun brought a female pitcher for the national team and a catcher. When I asked him if he could join me, he said, "Of course, I can join him." And when I asked coach Park if he could only take the catchers for an hour and a half to practice, he told me to do as much as I wanted.

I only did three things today, but I don't know how fast time flew. To be honest, I didn't have much time. Young players followed me well, but when the ball fell back during wild pitching, it was a little hard to run fast and slide and throw it home or to first base.

Despite having explained it to young players several times, it did not go well. Of course, it may be a difficult skill for young players. However, if you think about it easily, it is not that difficult. Because it is a skill that you can do everything if you know how to slide.

I had no choice but to rent a laggard to the catchers and show them a demonstration myself. At that short moment, I was worried about what if I, who is sixty-eight, ended up disgracing myself in front of the young players wearing the laggard, but despite the worries, I slid nicely and demonstrated. Not once, but many times. However, I didn't know when I was teaching hard, but I guess I can't hide my age. When I came home after the talent donation was over, my knees hurt little by little while I was doing a sauna.

Still, I don't know how grateful I am to be able to demonstrate in front of young players at this age. I saw today that Lee Man-soo is not dead yet.
